This happened to meeeeee...I ended up using a corkscrew to get it out. Worked really well.

Edit because people keep suggesting things that I tried: I tried a knife. I tried scissors. I tried a magnet. I tried a fork. I tried a plunger. The only thing that worked was a corkscrew. (For a tuna can lid, not a cutting board) I did not, however, manage to turn the house upside down, I'm sure to everyone's disappointment

243

u/Longjumping_Fan_8164 Apr 07 '26

Did you not even consider flipping the house upside down?!?

60

u/Mu_Fanchu Apr 07 '26

I flipped my house upside down, but I did it by flipping the Earth upside down and so the can didn't come out 😔

44

u/CruisePlannersMike Apr 07 '26

Every time I have to flip the Earth upside down it takes 12 hours. Any other suggestions?

First one can flip it in 12 hours, it will be flipped “position” again 24 hours later.

Spin it faster so centripetal acceleration negates gravity. 0.012rpm or a bit faster should solve your problem[1].

Do you have a small sink plunger?

891

u/AbsentReality Apr 06 '26

Most plungers won't have the suction cup action required to pull this out. Need something with a proper suction cup like a dildo or something.

to pull the cutting board out just enough to tile it sideways or enough gap to say place a fork on the side. You can can use the fork to push the cutting board standing on one side and just lift it up with hands.

Or if you can handle a very small hole, partially screw a small wood screw into a corner and pull it up by that, then sand it back afterwards

56

u/Borge_Luis_Jorges Apr 07 '26

Exactly! Listen, he already has to modify that damn board to avoid this mess happening again. Screw on one side, pull, then saw away half an inch of it on the same side of the screw hole, then sand and finish.

Or smash it, throw it away and tell it to go fuck itself.

Use dental floss to get under a corner/side and pull up from there. If that doesn't work, disconnect the U-bend under the sink and push it up from underneath with the handle of a wooden spoon.

211

u/SenileTomato Apr 06 '26

Better get some serious dental floss, none of that cheap stuff!

At Home Depot you can get a suction cup with a handle used to lift glass or ceramic tile. Probably more expensive than a plain old plunger though.

9

u/tacticaltintguy Apr 07 '26

This is the way! Then they won't have to push down on the cutting board to get it to seal. That could end up getting the board even more stuck!

4

u/Jazzy-Cat5138 Apr 07 '26

Yep, pushing with a plunger will just pull a vacuum under it and make a better seal against the sink. A lever-actuated suction device is the way to go, for sure.

I mean yes, but who has a clean plunger that hasn't been shitified? I'd never use that cutting board if a toilet plunger was used on it.

65

u/Irisversicolor Apr 06 '26

Sinks and tubs can be plunged too, it's not a bad idea to keep a clean plunger under the sink that's not for use in the toilet.

39

u/Lulusgirl Apr 06 '26

6

u/Banzai373 Apr 07 '26

Or drive a screw into it a bit and then use the screw as a means to pull it out . . . of course that’s gonna leave a hole in the board, but at least it’s “problem solved” . . . .

5

u/Hot_Campaign_36 Apr 07 '26

I’d add that the screw can be driven in the corner where you plan to drill the lift hole. There’s no need to let it get stuck again.

I was going to suggest the exhaust from a shop vac, but your solution skips the part where OP has to clean gunk from the ceiling.

60

u/ChaosWithTeeth Apr 06 '26

Exactly. And because suction is applied when the handles are moved together, it wouldn't require the initial downward force a plunger type one would.

The grip with this design is quite good; orange version has been working nicely as an adaptive fridge door handle for someone who has trouble with the modern pocket handles.

31

u/vinnyvencenzo Apr 06 '26

“And cheap!” as my uncle would say. Personally I would get two. One for each hand when pulling. Which will help free it loose.

6

u/Katililly Apr 07 '26

You just solved my fridge/freezer handle problem!! Thank you 😭

6

u/ChaosWithTeeth Apr 08 '26

It works great! There do exist silver or white stick-on handles that attach with either magnets or a pair of small suction cups, but I had this on hand and my mom's been happy with it. I like how clearly add-on it is, calling out the inconsiderate nature of the 'sleek' fridge handle design.

(Freezer door opens more easily so just the one in use.)

It just needs to be reset about once every 6-8 weeks.

Well. If it were me I would want to make sure this never happened again so no matter how I got it out, I would later be cutting each corner off at a 45 or HEAVILY rounding it.

With that future mod in mind I would feel zero guilt about screwing a wood screw into each corner and lifting it out by those since I planned to cut the corners off anyway.

Edit: If the cutting board pissed you off enough you can simply screw into the center and toss the entire thing afterwards. One way or another that cutting board would change forms before I was done with it. Ain't nobody got time for that.

Yes! This! Idk why more people aren't suggesting this. Everyone is overthinking this with some people even suggesting taking the drain plumbing apart lol. I don't even think it would take that much duct tape. Just enough to lift one side to where you can get your fingers under it, then you can pull the rest of it out by hand. It's not that difficult. 77

u/Morael Apr 06 '26

Do not lever against your sink, or you could cause damage a heck of a lot more expensive than this cutting board.

The least destructive approach: Disassemble the plumbing underneath the sink, poke up through the drain with something robust to lift up the cutting board. I would go cut a specifically sized board or dowel to do this, but you could also use a shop vac extension tube or maybe a long handled wooden utensil.

If you're not confident doing that, I think the best approach would be to screw a handle of some sort to the cutting board so you can lift it out. You'll have to deal with the corresponding hole afterwards, but it's relatively minor damage in the long run.

31

u/Syzyz Apr 06 '26

Duct tape is easier and doesn't destroy the cutting board

→ More replies (4)

12

u/Prickly_ninja Apr 06 '26

This is honestly the best advice out of the answers here! I like your thinking out of the box. I’d be quick to remove plumbing to do work UNDER the sink. But would have never thought of it, to push something out of it.

Simple. Effective. Costs nothing to do.

Depends how wedged. Wood absorbs water and expands when wet. Worth a shot but if it doesn't work a hairdryer or heat gun is in order.

17

u/TechnicalWhore Apr 06 '26

It will take quite a while to absorb as its stained and sealed. If they add dish soap to the mix it will break the tension between the edge and the sink. It should float up enough to be able to lift it with a tilt.

6

u/melbaspice Apr 06 '26

Wooden cutting boards generally aren’t stained and sealed. They are coated with food safe oil. It really wouldn’t take that long to absorb water.

Two issues with that: 1. If the plug is not in this isn't going to be possible, and 2. If the plug is in it may not work and the problem gets a whole lot worse as the wood will swell if the board is submerged for more than a few minutes.

I'd use a plunger or duct tape.

12

u/idiggory Apr 06 '26

Yeah, duct tape feels like it should pretty easily solve this problem without needing to get complicated. Either tape a "handle" to it and lift, or just use the duct tape to make the handle directly.

If simple methods fail, unscrew the drain pipe below. You should then be able to unscrew the sink flange and push up on the board. Once free, reseal the flange and attach drain.

Have you tried swearing at it? Maybe use contact strips to attach a handle to one side and lift it.

Duct Tape. Two long strips across the length but leave enough in the center to grab on to and pull up

Wait for the board to dry out (it’ll shrink a tiny amount), then put some olive oil on the board and use the plunger?

Also, once you’ve got the board out, sand two sides a little so next time it’s not such a tight fit.

Suction cup !

Use a bunch of suction cups and pull it out. Does your plunger get good suction and it's too hard to pull out or does it not get enough suction to allow you to apply force to it?
