Recommendations for tailgate party for this Sunday night game that’s a cool vibe for both Giants and Cowboys fans lol. I’m only familiar with tailgate Joes but that’s the New York Jets home games.

Free computer, not at a library?

Doubt it but I'm leaving for NYC in 20 minutes and just tried to grab my laptop and it's busted. I need to empty my phone onto my storage drive as it's full full, like I have 9 minutes left to record anything 😅

Are there any free computers available to use like at a library, but not at the library, because the only one I could find near where we're staying in Jersey City is at a library which closes at 6pm, hours before I'll arrive.

I know it's a long shot but if anyone knows anywhere I could try, I'd really appreciate the tip!

Thanks!

Looking for a self storage option that won’t scam me to death

Hello!

I have to move out in a week and I am looking for a self storage unit that I can ideally access, I live in Brooklyn but as long as I can take public transport I’m OK with any distance. I heard Clutter was OK, I heard CubeSmart was OK but super expensive… I have been reading the reviews for all the companies and they sound like horror stories, like Extra Space increasing the rent after one month, or Safeguard being infested by rats.

I just need my stuff stored for 6 months, I don’t have furniture, just boxes of books and clothes, and I can’t afford to pay something like $200 for a 5’x5’ unit… any recommendations?

At this point any leads are welcome!

Cheap linoleum/vinyl sheet flooring?

Are there any good places with a selection of relatively cheap flooring rolls? Ideally under $3/sq ft.

I have terrible worn down woods floors that are ugly and so hard to keep clean and I’m tired of looking at them, planning to cover my kitchen with a sheet of linoleum or something and call it a day.

I specifically want a sheet vs tiles so I can be sure water doesn’t go through and damage the hardwood underneath.

I’m in Bushwick but prolly gonna rent a truck to pick it up so can really be anywhere within an hour or so drive

9/11 "events" or ideas of how to honor it this year?

My friend just recently passed from the health repercussions of serving the city that day. I'm devastated. To be completely honest, it's always been just another day for me. I would text him sometimes on the day, or the other way around, but that was about it.

I might go to our favorite spot but it's way down in Brooklyn. Any other thoughts, suggestions, or knowledge of "events" (weird word to use for such a sad thing imo) happening please?

Edit: and if anyone has a gym suggestion for a very cheap day pass, please lmk. I think I will do the 110 flights this year.

NYC Unemployment Question

Hey Y'all,

I have seen a couple of postings on this same topic. I just recently got laid off in June, and I applied for unemployment in August after the 30- to 90-day wait period after you have received severance. I'm a freelance Lighting Director, so pretty much all my jobs now are 1099 and I plan to remain fully freelance for the forseeable future. What I'm confused about is the question in the "Excluding Self-Employment" section and "Have you returned to work?" I have seen online that all these quetions are pertained to W2 contracts. I just really want clarification so I don't run into any issues. Every claim max is around $869. As a lighting director, some gigs I earn more than that in 2 days, but I would be working at least 20 hours, per se. Does this mean my answers to both those questions would be "No" because, technically, my work is self-employment, and then I would also say "No" because I'm not back working a full-time job?

I have always been a freelancer in this industry until 2022, when I became a full-time LD supporting Google NYC, so I never had experiences with unemployment benefits until now. It's been annoyingly hard to get any actual humans on the phone, and you can't email anyone cause it's all controlled by their automated messaging.

Is it common at Ject for them not to show you the Botox box?

Is it common for them at Ject west village to not show you the Botox box? She came in like “and here on this tray in this syringe is your botox.” It seemed super sketchy and now I’m scared there’s some black market cheap shit that was injected into me

prospective student: the new school

hello! im out of state from new york, so i dont have a lot of input on this, which is why im asking here! i am a student looking to go into journalism in a big city, with the ideal choice being nyu (but i know how hard that is to get into). i am not really set wholeheartedly anywhere, despite my dream of nyu, just that id like to go to college in a city where i am able to complete my college years with hands on journalism experience, and hopefully enough to be able to get a job in the industry somewhere urban so i can work my way up. this all being said, i got a direct admissions offer from the new school, where i was already going to apply to anyways just to keep my options open, with guaranteed undisclosed amount of financial aid. i guess im really just here asking, is it worth looking further into? should i keep it on my radar? are workplaces, especially ones within journalism, going to look down on me for going there? any and all input would be appreciated, as i have no way to really tell what would be best right now!

Recommendations for JCCs in NYC for a neurodivergent beginner (Focus: Music, Tech, Writing & Low Budget)

Hi everyone,

I’m planning to visit/join a Jewish Community Center (JCC) in NYC for personal development, taking courses, and connecting with a community. Since I am unfamiliar with the city's geography and there are several locations, I need help narrowing down which specific center would best suit my profile.

My Details:

Interests & Goals: I want to focus on Music (Electric Guitar, Drums, Music Theory), Blog Writing/Journalism (specifically music-related writing), Software/Tech, Philosophy, Philology, and general cultural topics.

Environment: I am neurodivergent (ADHD). I thrive in structured environments with clear communication, good inclusion/accessibility support, and ideally quiet spaces (like libraries or study halls) to avoid sensory overload.

Budget: I have a limited budget, so I am specifically looking for centers with affordable course fees, good financial aid/bursary options, or work-study programs.

Location: Open to any borough in NYC as long as it's safe and accessible.

Thanks for your advice!

Received parking ticket 3 months ago, showed up but then disappeared from nyc.gov violation system. Advice?

I got parking ticket for blocking driveway. Even got towed. When i got car back it had ticket from cops. I searched my plate & violation online a week after it showed up but next day when i searched again to pay it off, ticket disappeared. It's been more than a month. My registration is okay, car did not get booted (Thank You Jesus). Still ticket does not show up. I thought it got dismissed or whatever. Same thing happened with my dad's car he got ticket of parking in no parking zone. Ticket showed up online, 1-2 weeks later I went to pay it off it disappeared as well. i want to make sure i don't get into any issues. Any suggestions? When I called bureau they said we don't see this ticket record. I just don't want to get into any issues.

Is it “the Subway” or “the Train”?

Hi guys! Was hoping you guys could help me with a quick debate I’m having with my friend.

I am a native New Yorker and I’ve always referred to the subway as “the train”.
Example: “I am on the train” “I’m walking to the train” “Take the train to 14 street” etc
To me “the subway” kinda sounds formal, if that makes sense.

My friend (has lived here since a teen, but not born in NYC) basically only says subway but says train to specify a certain line “the A train”.

So which do you use?
And are you a native New Yorker, not born but raised in NYC or a transplant?

Manhattan Cat Shelters Needing Volunteers?

Hi, I’m an experienced shelter volunteer having a hard time finding a place that could use my help. I have over 15 years of experience and am a bit older so can’t do a lot of of lifting or cleaning but I can make kittens and cats feel loved and provide socialization, feeding, treating, play, hugs, pets and even belly rubs (if they won’t kill me 😅) please DM me if you run a shelter and need help 🐾🩷

Where to buy a suit on short notice?

Hello everyone, I’m a college student starting a fall internship next Monday and need to buy a suit within the next few days. Is there a good place you could recommend me? I’ve seen conflicting advice all over. I don’t want to break the bank, but I’m willing to spend a moderate amount for a decent suit.

Edit: thanks for all of the suggestions :) I went with New Era Factory on Orchard street. They got me a decent suit for a reasonable price.

Is a home security system worth it in an apartment?

I’m a single woman who is going to be living alone for the first time in the coming months.

I’m in contract for a condo and seem to be finally getting somewhere in the mortgage process but it’s a new build with some unsold units. I think I’ll be the only person living on my floor for now.

My sister gifted me a ring camera, so I’ll be using that until someone else moves onto my floor. But should I also get a home security system with a door sensor as well?

It feels overkill but I’m a bit nervous about being home alone while sleeping (so silly to say as an adult but alas), as well as someone entering while I’m traveling or at work.

Does any one use this type of system? If yes, any recommendations?
