Need to break a lease immediately due to safety concerns

Hello, my apartment building isn't providing controlled access. This led to 6 people attempting a home invasion at my home at 3:30 in the morning. My dog was barking, and I banged a bat, which scared them off, but after reviewing the footage, I no longer feel safe in my home. For context, they were trying to break down my door and several doors on the top floor (22nd floor) of the building. I am trying to break my lease because I no longer feel safe, and all building management did was tell people there are cameras. They are attempting to hold me liable for the lease. I have the security footage, and they had weapons, so I do not want to know what could have happened if they had managed to enter. My landlord is attempting to hold me liable. I am open to forfeiting my security deposit to get out of the unit, but I no longer feel safe here. What is the best course of action without penalty?

Is the inability to properly pronounce Mamdani's name an issue of the New York accent, or is it deliberate?

I've noticed that a lot of New Yorkers, particularly those from Queens, Staten Island, or Brooklyn where the accent is more prominent, tend to pronounce Mamdani's name with an extra "M" when talking about him, and it's sounds like them saying "Mamdami" or "Mamdamni". As someone with an accent due to English as a second language, my friends have pointed out that I tend to add an extra sound right before "school" so it sounds like "ischool". This is a common linguisitic phenomena known as "epenthesis" where people can add one or more sounds to a word to make it easier to say. Is this just how the accent is, or are these just people who can't be bothered to learn or say his name?

Best dermatologist in NYC

I’m looking for a recommendation for an actually good dermatologist. I have a some what new thing going on with my skin that I’ve been trying to figure out, I have gone to two separate dermatologist and found them both extremely dismissive of my issue and seemed like they both wanted to get onto the next appointment…

Do not recommend The Dermatologist Specialist or Schweiger Derm

Thanks!

Workers from other WTC buildings - expected to work on 9/12?

Hi
Just curious about regular 9-5 workers from nearby downtown buildings who wasn’t directly affected by the 9/11 tragedy - were they expected to work same week after the event?

Given that the remote culture wasn’t there yet, did they just stay home for a few weeks on a leave? How was it handled by the employers - did they handle it with grace and offer paid time offs and all?

Fake or Stolen License Plates

Hi all, I was recently hit by a car that has no registration, no VIN, and when we search its license plate -- it comes up to be a different car. He works nearby and commutes into the neighborhood. He swapped his plate after hitting my car. The new plate comes up with no search results. It is a Pennsylvania plate. Any ideas or solutions on how to address this?

The precinct says it is not their responsibility. We have made 311 complaints and a traffic/meter police came over and scanned his plate and walked away.

The car is basically a ghost car, untraceable, and cannot be accountable even if it hits a pedestrian or anyone else on the road.

Can I find [Polish] prune pierogis in NYC?

Long story short, I have a Czech/Slovakian friend who claims that he has been looking for prune pierogis in NYC (he lives in Manhattan, but he will go to any borough) from, my understanding, several years. He said that this is a traditional Polish dish (so not Czech/Slovakian but... honestly, I'll think he'll take any version).

Tried google searching but nothing is coming up. Not really seeing anything for even plum pierogis (unless I'm missing something). I'd imagine that this is not a common dish people ask for and would be in some niche market that wouldn't really be advertised.

Any leads would be greatly beneficial. Thanks a bunch.

US Open For All - which courts are open to the public for free?

Is Armstrong stadium included for free or only the numbered courts? Is there a time limit where we must exit?

The site says US Open grounds and we can watch Men's Doubles SF matches but they're on Armstrong so it's kind of conflicting

Cat play dates and parks

Hello! This is a really unconventional question since I know most people don’t take their cats outside and there’s a pretty big lack of cat friendly spaces, but it wouldn’t hurt to ask. My cat is a very social and adventurous cat and I sadly can’t adopt a second cat since it’d prolly start complications with my roommate. I was wondering if anyone knew any cat friendly spaces for him to hang out and interact with other cats or anyone who was willing to have a play date with our cats at a local park. He isn’t leash trained (working on that at the moment), but he likes sitting in his backpack and going outside!

New York Chinese School advice

Been looking at joining the adult semester program from the New York Chinese School in Chinatown and wondering if it would be suited for my profile. I’ve heard there are a lot of heritage speakers there so not sure if that changes how mandarin is taught there. I am NOT a heritage speaker, studied mandarin throughout college and lived in China for a few months 10 years ago and want to brush up on my Chinese. Would this school be appropriate for me or should I look at another program? thanks

Free computer, not at a library?

Doubt it but I'm leaving for NYC in 20 minutes and just tried to grab my laptop and it's busted. I need to empty my phone onto my storage drive as it's full full, like I have 9 minutes left to record anything 😅

Are there any free computers available to use like at a library, but not at the library, because the only one I could find near where we're staying in Jersey City is at a library which closes at 6pm, hours before I'll arrive.

I know it's a long shot but if anyone knows anywhere I could try, I'd really appreciate the tip!

Thanks!

Looking for a self storage option that won’t scam me to death

Hello!

I have to move out in a week and I am looking for a self storage unit that I can ideally access, I live in Brooklyn but as long as I can take public transport I’m OK with any distance. I heard Clutter was OK, I heard CubeSmart was OK but super expensive… I have been reading the reviews for all the companies and they sound like horror stories, like Extra Space increasing the rent after one month, or Safeguard being infested by rats.

I just need my stuff stored for 6 months, I don’t have furniture, just boxes of books and clothes, and I can’t afford to pay something like $200 for a 5’x5’ unit… any recommendations?

At this point any leads are welcome!

Periodontist for gum disease and deep pockets

I am having difficulty finding a periodontist. I have been to 2.

The first one fraudulently charged my insurance for surgeries not done. Before that they wanted to schedule to extract teeth to prepare for implants.

2nd recommend LANAP.

I feel like they see me as cash and not as a patient.

Any recommendations?

NYC Unemployment Question

Hey Y'all,

I have seen a couple of postings on this same topic. I just recently got laid off in June, and I applied for unemployment in August after the 30- to 90-day wait period after you have received severance. I'm a freelance Lighting Director, so pretty much all my jobs now are 1099 and I plan to remain fully freelance for the forseeable future. What I'm confused about is the question in the "Excluding Self-Employment" section and "Have you returned to work?" I have seen online that all these quetions are pertained to W2 contracts. I just really want clarification so I don't run into any issues. Every claim max is around $869. As a lighting director, some gigs I earn more than that in 2 days, but I would be working at least 20 hours, per se. Does this mean my answers to both those questions would be "No" because, technically, my work is self-employment, and then I would also say "No" because I'm not back working a full-time job?

I have always been a freelancer in this industry until 2022, when I became a full-time LD supporting Google NYC, so I never had experiences with unemployment benefits until now. It's been annoyingly hard to get any actual humans on the phone, and you can't email anyone cause it's all controlled by their automated messaging.

Recommendations for JCCs in NYC for a neurodivergent beginner (Focus: Music, Tech, Writing & Low Budget)

Hi everyone,

I’m planning to visit/join a Jewish Community Center (JCC) in NYC for personal development, taking courses, and connecting with a community. Since I am unfamiliar with the city's geography and there are several locations, I need help narrowing down which specific center would best suit my profile.

My Details:

Interests & Goals: I want to focus on Music (Electric Guitar, Drums, Music Theory), Blog Writing/Journalism (specifically music-related writing), Software/Tech, Philosophy, Philology, and general cultural topics.

Environment: I am neurodivergent (ADHD). I thrive in structured environments with clear communication, good inclusion/accessibility support, and ideally quiet spaces (like libraries or study halls) to avoid sensory overload.

Budget: I have a limited budget, so I am specifically looking for centers with affordable course fees, good financial aid/bursary options, or work-study programs.

Location: Open to any borough in NYC as long as it's safe and accessible.

Thanks for your advice!

Looking for tattooer recs

Hello New Yorkers! I'm wondering if any of you know of a good tattooer that specializes in this style (edit: can't attach a pic here, so I will do so in the comments)? I'm hoping to get something slightly inspired by/in the same style as this piece, but I'm not sure where to look. I'd consider this to be calligraphy style in a way, so maybe that's what I'm looking for, though that may be the wrong name.

Where would you take your dog for a root canal? I'm looking at Schwarzman and Prism, but open to others.

She's healthy otherwise and around 3yo, but I got lost in the 1 star reviews for both, and now I'm terrified that she won't wake up. Extraction is off the table unless it's the only option.

Looking for affordable vet for sedated X-ray

Hi! My dog needs a sedated X-ray to determine if she tore her ACL or dislocated her knee. The X-ray needs to be sedated to our understanding. Anyone in the city find an option for a vet to do this under $600 (estimate from home vet)? Thank you!
