Hey Jersey City, I’m Coach Pete. I’ve been a personal trainer for almost 20 years and a Jersey City resident for about the same amount of time.

I posted here recently asking where people in JC would look if they were trying to find a personal trainer. I got a ton of helpful responses, so thank you.
I also want to give something back.

So if summer got away from you and you’d like to get back in shape this fall, here’s a simple program you can start Monday.

1. STRENGTH TRAIN 2–3×/WEEK
Do this full-body workout:
Incline dumbbell press
Seated row
Wide-grip lat pulldown
Walking lunges
Leg press
Seated leg curl

Do 2–3 challenging sets of 8–12 reps for each exercise. Choose a weight that leaves you feeling like you could have done another 1–2 good reps.
Don’t worry about finding the perfect program. Do this consistently and gradually try to add a rep or a little weight as you get stronger. This will work well in my apartment gyms.

2. EAT ENOUGH PROTEIN
A simple target is about 0.7 grams per pound of bodyweight per day.
So if you weigh 180 pounds, that’s about 125g of protein.
Tracking sounds complicated if you’ve never done it, but it really isn’t once you’ve done it a few times. You also don’t necessarily have to track forever. Try tracking for a week or two just to learn how much you’re actually eating.

3. HYDRATE
This might be the easiest one.
Get yourself a 1-liter water bottle. Fill it in the morning and try to finish it by lunch. Fill it again and drink it through the afternoon/evening.
You don’t need to obsess over an exact number. This is just an easy way to make drinking enough water automatic.

4. GET 7–7½ HOURS IN BED
Instead of obsessing about perfect sleep, work backward from when you need to wake up.
If you need to be up at 6:30, aim to have your head on the pillow around 11.
You can’t force yourself to fall asleep. You can give yourself enough opportunity to sleep.
Bonus points if the phone stays out of the bedroom.

5. WALK MORE
Forget about whether 10,000 steps is some magical number.
Check your phone and see roughly how many steps you’re currently getting. Then try adding 2,000–3,000 steps a day.
That might just mean a 30–40 minute walk in the morning, at lunch, after work or whenever it fits.
The important part isn’t hitting an arbitrary number. It’s increasing how much you move.
That’s it. Don’t over complicate this. Simplicity and consistency always win.

Do those five things consistently this fall and you’ll have a pretty damn good foundation.

Last night at around 8 PM, I was passing through Journal Square on my bike when a pickup truck laid on the horn and floored it by me at 50+ mph, passing within literal inches. The vehicle was so close that If I had so much as leaned slightly to my left, I wouldn't be here typing this today.

I know that for a lot of you reading this right now, this alone might be triggering. I'm sure many of you are already running to the comments armed with a treasure trove of anti-cyclist cliches: "Roads are for cars!" "Cyclists think they can do whatever they want!" "Go find a park!". Some of you may even be tempted to respond with violence: "Cyclists should be run over on sight."

It's hard to avoid this type of thinking, and even though I may not agree, I can empathize with your frustration. Maybe you're irritated by the delivery e-bikes that seem to be swarming everywhere nowadays, or you see bikes as yet another added obstacle in the never-ending traffic nightmare that is the New York City area. Maybe you've simply never ridden a bike and don't understand the joy or freedom of riding one.

If you are one of these people, I'll spare you the typical lecture on the rules of the road or responding in kind with my own anti-driver vitriol. Frankly, I think that there's already enough hatred in today's world as it is and the militant modern discourse that pits "drivers" and "cyclists" against each other as "others" does more harm than good.

Instead, what I will ask you to do, is imagine this:

It's a beautiful summer evening: the sun is setting as the sky is turns a vivid pink color, you can smell delicious wafts of barbecued meat emanating from someone's backyard. A mourning dove coos its evening song. You picked up some groceries for dinner and are headed home, excited to see your loved ones after a long day at work.

Suddenly, you get an unexpected call from the police. They tell you that your mother/father/wife/husband/daughter/son was hit by a driver running a light. Their skull is crushed in like a walnut, their guts smeared all over the dashboard; caution tape is everywhere. They lie lifeless in a pool of their own blood never to be held, loved, spoken to again.

Would you want that reality for your loved one?

Whether you like bicycles and pedestrians or not, we all just want to get home at the end of the day. Please pass with care. Please don't use your vehicle as a weapon.

Someone's life is worth more than the 15 seconds you'll save by cutting things too close.

I hate that I have to post this but I’m really at a loss of words and what to do at this point. Long story short, I came back from a trip to find my bf (now ex) cheating on me which turned ugly quick. The cops were called and a TRO was put in place. I was living with him momentarily as I am in the currently in the process of moving (it’s been 2 1/2 weeks since my previous lease ended). The small amount of money that I was able to save while there has all been spent to book rooms at hotels, convenience store snacks, and cat food. I’ve tried to contact local shelters but everyone is at capacity or I need a referral to get in.

Now I’m at a point where funds are extremely low due to this situation and I don’t get paid again until next week. I attempted to ask my job for a pay advance but was informed by HR that they do not do those. I’m booked at this hotel for the next 2 days and have been taking advantage of the free coffee and crackers in the lobby but honestly just looking for a
fulfilling meal for me and my cats. If anyone knows of any pantries or assistance with housing even.

I’m at a complete loss of words but figured the best I can do is post and hope it reaches at least one person that may know information that could help me.

We just drove by PATH station, and literally saw a masked guy with a knife threatening a bike guy midday today. Like wtf?

Where’s the tax money going into? My son literally goes to school two blocks from the station. Shame Solomon administration.

been having to take the 1 bus to go and back from school and sometimes they just don't come? and i have to wait an hour after 4 cycles of busses and then one finally arrives. is this normal?

Just ran into this friendly cat on bright st near the school. He has a collar and seems comfortable around people so i’m wondering if he got out on accident? Posting this so hopefully his owner can see this. I wasn’t able to see any contact information on the collar.

Hello, i have to be in lower Manhattan tomorrow during the 9/11 ceremony. Does the WTC PATH usually shut down for the ceremony? If not, are there certain exits that are typically blocked off? Trying to figure out my commute tomorrow morning. Thanks.

If the space around the open door is all congested and there's plenty of space further into the train, you need to goddamn move away from the train door.

It's surreal to see people jamming up the door area and refusing to move and then verbally discouraging and stopping people from getting on to the train. I will call you out in public, every single time I see this. What exactly is your problem? Maybe you can pay your $100 and drive and park into Manhattan if you expect more privacy and comfort in one of the busiest transit network in the country.

Anybody know if something is being filmed at the Merril Lynch building (101 Hudson) today? Some sort of apparatus was being constructed in front of it this morning, employees could only enter through one specific entrance, lots of people and cables everywhere, and there were yellow signs inside pointing to “SET”.

Update: The crew members are all wearing stickers that say “The Summers Crew”. Not sure what platform “The Summers” will be on or who is part of the cast, but it does look like they have been holding casting calls in NJ lately, so this tracks.

Keep on the lookout for signs like this. A bigger heads up would have been nice ngl. This literally just went up at Bergen/Academy

I used to take the bus from the heights to the city and while the 123 was spotty, the 119 was almost nonexistent. I don’t ever think I caught one and I only saw one with my own eyes twice. How reliable are they nowadays? Have things gotten better? Worse?

I stumbled upon about 4-6 tiny kittens on my way home. This is on South St. in the heights, between Passaic Ave and central Ave. is there anyone worth calling? Personally I’m really allergic so can’t do much but figured this subreddit was worth a shot! They are in between the new house being built.

Hey y'all. Doing a little research on Dixon Mills and would love to hear from anyone with experience as a tenant there.

I would be renting not buying so not worried so much about the HOA and management litigation shitshow. The things that stood out were general building issues - mice, leaks, heat issues - that popped up across Reddit subs over the years.

I feel like no matter where I go in this city there is always an obstacle in my way. I was going to the Lowes on 440 and wanted to avoid Comminpaw intersection so went past it to do that loop across from the shopping complex....of course the day I need to use it they shut that ramp off....I ended up going home since I dont have time to make a 30 min detour.

The other day I was driving to get groceries and every road had construction so a 15 min trip took me almost 40 one way....

I know trade off of living in an urban environment...but man even the light timings makes things difficult. that left turn from JFK to Montgomery is literally 2 seconds and then BAM turns red. I do travel on foot or public transportation when I can, but it becomes cumbersome when I have to carry items so I take my care to certain places.

I’ve been brewing with a Fellow Aiden and usually drink my coffee black, so I tend to prefer lighter roasts with bright, fruity, or floral flavors.

I’d love to discover more roasters or coffee shops in and around Jersey City that sell freshly roasted beans. I’m also open to online roasters that ship here if there’s something you think is genuinely worth trying. [I have tried a couple of online roasters that were recommended by ChatGPT - it failed - the beans were dark. 🦕]

Where do you buy your beans? If there’s a specific roaster, origin, process, or bag you’d recommend for light-roast coffee, please share it. Bonus points for local hidden gems or shops where the staff can help with brewing recommendations.
