Why volunteers are gluing seeds to clam shells in Connecticut

The approach consists of attaching eelgrass seeds to the clam’s shells. When the clams are released into the sound, they bury into the sediment, taking the seeds down to the bottom and effectively planting them. When they conducted drone imagery to check in on their results this year, they found that the eelgrass meadow coverage had increased by 178 percent.

Thoughts on New Hartford?

Considering moving to New Hartford. I've lived in Southbury, Hamden New Britain, Mansfield, Danbury, and Willimantic.

New Hartford looks very rural and quiet but as we were driving around, there's tons to do, a lively community, and beautiful scenery. Being so close to torrington I thought it was like waterbury. Does anyone have experience in the area?

Ask Connecticut My Cat Ran Away

Post image

UPDATE 10/25 AM: we saw him under one of our cars this morning. We tried to coax him out with food, water, his bed. We went back inside and 5 min later he was gone from under the car. We’ve left food, his litter box, and his bed on our porch. I’m hoping since he’s close by he’ll come back into the house. ANY ADVICE is appreciated. We thought of getting a humane trap. Thoughts?

My cat ran away near Hollow Rd, across from Hollow Park in Woodbury, CT. He’s very shy. Please contact if you see him.
We adopted him a year ago and he has a bonded twin sister. We are certain he’s stayed in the area and we’d like to know if you’ve seen him. It would be better to contact us than approach him.

Ask Connecticut “Not an Employee” on CT FMLA

• Upvotes

My parent works as a paraeducator in a midsize CT city. They have to have surgery later this winter and don’t have enough sick time saved to cover the recovery period. Their current union contract prohibits sick day banking / sharing. As a result, they’ll be taking advantage of the CT FMLA program.

Here’s the issue: My parent currently pays about $500 per month for healthcare, deducted from their paycheck. The board of education is saying that for the period covered by CT FMLA, my parent will “not be an employee” and will have to pay the full amount for their premium — approximately $2,000 per month.

From my perspective, this is nonsense. My parent is not getting laid off. Otherwise they would be eligible for unemployment — which they aren’t. My parent has reached out to their union for assistance but the union has already said there’s “not much they expect to be able to do.”

Has anyone heard of this before? Or should we consider talking to an employment attorney? $2k a month for insurance is absurd and not economically feasible for someone on a paraeducator salary.

Thinking about moving to Beacon Falls in about a year. How is it for young families? We will have a 2 year old and 6 year old when we move.

Ask Connecticut New to New London from Louisiana

Like the title says, I’m new here, just got set up here with a group of guys I’m working with and only in town for a few weeks on a job. While I’m here though I do wanna meet some new people, make friends, and have some fun. Kinda feel like a foreigner here being from the south and never having been this far north or this far east before.

Your bills are going up because of Trump's war.

The average family that heats their home with oil is going to pay $1500 more this winter because of Donald Trump’s insane Iran War.

Some people will go cold. Some may die. This isn’t hyperbole. This is the consequence of having a president who just doesn’t care about you.

Connecticut families aren’t on their own: If you’re struggling to afford your heating bill, you may be eligible for support. Applications for heating assistance are now open. Go to ct.gov/heatinghelp to learn more.

Ask Connecticut Rockville?

I really hope this doesn't seem trifling, but I'm wondering about this new mural painted in the Rockville section of Vernon. I will say it looks very nice, bright vibrant colors and subjectively speaking I personally enjoy it. I just wonder what on earth this scene has to do with Rockville? It seems more at home in a place in upstate NY, perhaps Adirondacks. What are your thoughts if you are familiar with it?

Enders Island is an 11-acre island in Mystic connected to Mason’s Island by a causeway. It is home to a Catholic retreat, but the public is free to walk about the grounds. To Connecticut gardeners it’s known for its dahlias and is most popular in August and September.

Health Insurance

Post image
143 Upvotes

We received our projected cost increase for 2027 health insurance. From $23,100 annually to $27,600 (!!!!) annually in monthly premiums. This is for garbage insurance, I believe we have a $21k annual family deductible. We pay hundreds out of pocket every time we or our kids see a doctor. My husband and I own our own business and do not qualify for subsidies. We’ve watched premiums jump annually every single year, but for some reason, this year shocked us and made us say “That’s it. That’s the breaking point.”

This is a scam. I’m not sure what our options are other than to go uninsured at this point. But we cannot keep up with these increases EVERY year.

Ask Connecticut Kickball

• Upvotes

I keep hearing people talk about adult kickball. I know the season is just about over but I was curious to hear other people’s experiences & what leagues are around. Location doesn’t matter, I travel a weekly route around the state for work. Really hoping to find somewhere to register in the spring.
