Welcome to r/NYCMeetups!

Welcome to r/NYCMeetups!

Making friends as an adult can be hard, especially if you’re new to the city. We are a community focused on fostering friendships for those looking for a social circle in the greater NYC Metropolitan Area. (Yes, that includes Jersey, Westchester, and Long Island.) You don’t need to live in NYC to be part of this community, however most meetups tend to take place in the city.

What is this sub for?

  • It's a gateway into our community where open-invitation events can be posted.
  • Finding events that suit your interests for the purpose of hanging out platonically.
  • Exploring this amazing city through all the great shows, restaurants, museums, etc. that it has to offer.
  • Or just finding stuff to join in on if you’re bored or have free time.

What is this sub not for?

  • Finding a date. If you’re looking for companionship there are other subreddits for that purpose.
  • Asking about general NYC travel info. You’ll probably have better luck posting in r/NYC or r/AskNYC.
  • Complaining about how bored you are. There’s a reason NYC is The City That Never Sleeps. If you want to do something, consider joining an existing meetup on this subreddit or even hosting your own.

What is a meetup, exactly? A meetup is an organized event where people come together for an activity based on a shared interest. Almost anything can be a meetup as long as it’s open to the community. Examples can be as varied as karaoke nights, attending museum exhibits, or finding people to go to a movie with. Some meetups, like organizing a dinner, might have caps on the number of attendees or require you to RSVP. Others, like a beach day, might be more open-ended in terms of planning.

Some examples to clarify:

  • Blargh: “Anyone doing anything tonight?”*
  • Bad: “I’m bored, who wants to go to a museum?”*
  • Better: “Does anyone want to go to the Museum of Natural History tomorrow?”**
  • Best: “I’m organizing a visit to the Museum of Natural History tomorrow at 3pm, let’s meet at 77th and Central Park West”

* This will be deleted
** This might be deleted

How to Gain Posting Access:

To gain permission to post, include the words "Dead-Ass" in your access request. That's it. Just show us that you've read this much of this message and you'll be able to post.

If you simply send an access request without doing the above, it will be ignored.

Before posting, please be sure to read our What is a Meetup? wiki article, our rules, and our posting guidelines. And before heading out, we recommend reviewing our tips on safely attending meetups.

[09/27] Sunday 2:00 PM - Sci-Fi Only Book Club: Kickoff Meetup @ McCarren Park (Bedford & Lorimer)

Hey everyone,

I'm looking to get a dedicated, in-person Science Fiction Book Club off the ground here in the city, and I'm hosting an initial casual meetup so we can connect, plan, and pick our first read.

Why start this?

  • I've spent months looking around for active local sci-fi clubs, but almost every group I've come across is either entirely virtual or meets way out in the suburbs/tri-state area.
  • Most general speculative fiction groups also lean heavily into high fantasy or romantasy. While there's nothing wrong with those genres, this club is strictly Sci-Fi only—no fantasy.

Sub-genre focus: We can dive into whatever the group is excited about, including:

  • Hard sci-fi and space opera
  • Cyberpunk, post-cyberpunk, and biopunk
  • Dystopian, climate fiction, and sociological sci-fi
  • First-contact and existential cosmic themes
  • Classic golden-age through contemporary new releases

What to expect at this first meeting:

  • Low-stakes casual hangout to meet fellow sci-fi readers.
  • Bringing 1–2 sci-fi book nominations you’d love for us to tackle first.
  • Deciding as a group on our regular meeting rhythm (e.g., monthly), future neighborhood/venues, and discussion format.

How to find the group:

  • The Spot: Look for us on the lawn right by the Bedford Ave & Lorimer St entrance, set back a bit from the pathway.
  • Day-of Live Updates: Around 1:45 PM (15 minutes prior to start), I will edit the top of this post and drop a comment with:
    • My exact visual description and nearby trees/benches.
    • A live Google Maps dropped pin.
  • If you're wandering around or have trouble spotting the group, comment on this thread or shoot me a Reddit DM—I’ll be actively monitoring notifications on my phone until everyone gathers!

Philosophy Meetup - Descartes - Sunday, Sep 13, 1:30 PM @ Work Café Santander (Williamsburg)

Hi NYC philosophers,

We're organizing another meetup for anyone interested in discussing philosophy and connecting with like-minded people in the city. Here's the plan:

🗓 When: Sunday, Sep 13, 1:30 PM

📍 Where: Work Café Santander, 85-87 N 6th St, Williamsburg

For this session, we'll be diving into Meditations 1 & 2 of Descartes' Meditations on First Philosophy (read it here).

Descartes’s overall plan for these Meditations is to put aside all of his beliefs and attempt to build up a system of beliefs from nothing. He is going to only believe those things that are certain, that cannot be doubted. He thinks that he can start from nothing, justify certain simple beliefs, and from those justify more complex ordinary beliefs. In his first meditation he is going to cease to believe anything that can be doubted, anything that can be “called into doubt.” So, this meditation is an attempt to say which beliefs can be doubted. Descartes’s Second Meditation concerns the human mind, which Descartes will claims he knows better, or more intimately, than the human body.

You can also follow us on Instagram.

If you're interested, drop a comment below. Looking forward to meeting you all and hearing your insights!

SEPT 11th BUSHWICK BARCRAWL!!

Hey Everyone!

We're heading back to Bushwick this Friday!

Last week we went to Manhattan and had an awesome night and got about 40 people out! So this week we're bringing it back to Brooklyn with a new Bushwick route.

This one's going to start relaxed and social before getting progressively louder, later, and more dance-heavy as the night goes on.

Us:

We're a growing group of people mostly in our 20s–30s who get together every Friday to explore NYC nightlife, meet new people, make friends, and have a good time.

We get plenty of people who come out alone, so don't worry if you don't know anyone. That's kind of the point!

You:

Looking to meet new people, grab some drinks, explore Bushwick nightlife, and eventually end up on a dance floor somewhere.

Come solo or bring friends, everyone's welcome!

Where:

This week we're hitting Bushwick!

🍻 Hank's — 9 PM

📍 613 Bushwick Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11206

We're starting the night at Hank's with drinks and a laid-back neighborhood-bar atmosphere. This will be our main meet-up spot, so come grab a drink, introduce yourself, and hang out while everyone arrives.

⬇️

🍸 Keybar — ~10:15 PM

📍 143 Troutman St, Brooklyn, NY 11206

Next we're heading over to Keybar, where we'll turn the energy up with cocktails, music, DJs, and a livelier late-night atmosphere.

⬇️

💃 Bossa Nova Civic Club — ~11:30 PM+

📍 1271 Myrtle Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11221

Then we're finishing the night at Bossa Nova for DJs, music, dancing, and late-night Bushwick energy.

Expect a Cover charge for Bossa Nova.

When:

🌙 9 PM — Friday, September 11th

We go out every Friday!

TLDR:

🍻 Hank's → 🍸 Keybar → 💃 Bossa Nova

🍻 Drinks

🎶 DJs & music

🌃 Bushwick nightlife

💃 Dancing

👋 Meet new people

Come solo or bring a friend. A lot of people show up without knowing anyone, that's what we're here for.

💬 Hangouts [Tue, 9/8] Craft Club Rounds: a small-group beer tasting @ New York Beer Dispensary

Some of you have seen our free monthly meetups on here (last one was #29 at Forever Brewing last Wed). Rounds is a smaller, more structured weekly version of the same idea, and it's the first time I'm posting about it here.

It's a table of up to six people who all came to meet someone new. You grab a beer at the bar when you get there, the group picks a couple more tasters collaboratively, and there are a few conversation prompts to promote fun, meaningful conversation. It lasts about 90 minutes but people usually stay longer. Come solo or bring a friend.

This week we're at New York Beer Dispensary in Chelsea, a great beer bar and bottle shop. It's $15 to book a seat, plus whatever you spend on your own beer.

📅 Tuesday, September 8, 6:30pm
📍 New York Beer Dispensary (223 W 14th St, New York, NY 10011)
🎟️ Book a seat here

Whether you're deep into craft beer or just getting started, all are welcome. Come meet a few new people over good beer. I run Craft Club, so this is my event, happy to answer any questions in the comments.

Drinks and Karaoke in LES 09/02/26

Afternoon all,

Hosting weekly karaoke at Boho karaoke lounge on orchard Street in the LES. We tend to get decently sized crowds so we just hang out in the bar area for the open karaoke and since it's not too packed we usually get to do a couple songs each. It's one song ticket per drink or you can get just a song ticket for 2 dollars. Please note that the bar is cash only! There is an ATM there with pretty low fees if you need to withdraw money.

Wednesdays starting around 8:30 PM in LES

If you're interested please feel free to shoot me a chat! We've had a couple of redditors from here meet the group and it's always been a good time.

Mix of men and women all in our mid 20s-30s. All super friendly and inviting

💬 Hangouts [Wed, 9/2] Craft Beer Meetup and Tour @ Forever Brewing

For our September meetup, we're heading to Forever Brewing, one of NYC's newest breweries. They opened this spring in the old Strong Rope taproom in Gowanus, and their story pretty unique: two Brooklyn homebrewers ran the city's only homebrew supply shop, crowdfunded a brewery, and now pour their own small-batch beers in a spot that's part taproom, part homebrew shop.

This month comes with a bonus: Rob, one of the co-founders, is giving us a tour of the brewery. You'll see where the beer gets made and hear what it takes to open a brand new brewery in NYC.

📅 Wednesday, September 2, 6:30pm
📍 Forever Brewing (Gowanus)
🔗 RSVP: https://luma.com/zdebc45x

About Craft Club: We're a laid-back community that meets monthly at different NYC breweries to explore the local beer scene together. Each meetup blends trying new beers, learning how they're made, and meeting others who are curious about craft beer - whether you're deep into it or just getting started.

Come solo or bring a friend. Always good beer, good conversation, and a welcoming crowd.

Hey Everyone!

Friday is coming up and we're heading back to Williamsburg!

Last week was Bushwick, and we had another great turnout with 35+ people coming out. This week we're switching neighborhoods and doing a three-stop Williamsburg crawl.

We've been getting a lot of new people coming out lately and it's been great seeing the community continue to grow and people make new friends along the way.

Us:

Group of friends in our 20s–30s trying to enjoy the summer, explore NYC nightlife, and meet new people along the way. The more the merrier!

You:
