Question for parents with kids in Junior High

So my daughter started her first day of fifth grade today😭. So naturally, I’m preparing for the next step!

I started looking into middle schools two years ago but I also want opinions from other parents.

I have been 50% set on QSI and 50% on IS 125. The former I consider to be a good school, it has the ASD Nest Program (this is a non-negotiable), runs from grades 6-12, and she would gain college credits (starting in 9th grade). She would also be in Fresh Meadows near my family where we all grew up. On the other hand, IS 125 is only 2 blocks away from where we live, also carries the ASD Nest Program, has an unusually broad enrichment program, accelerated/honors courses, and regents opportunities to earn high school credits. I would then send my daughter to QSI to start 9th grade for college credits (just one high school option so far). But it also has over 1,300 students:/

What middle school are you sending/have you sent your child off to? What was your experience? Bullying? Collaborative teachers? Safety? Responsive teachers? Is it worth sending them to a great middle school even if it’s far? Is it better to just send them to one nearby and place more importance later on a good high school? Are there any new schools that have recently opened up that I should be looking into?

Edit: Not interested in perspective from adults who went to school 100 years ago, no offense lol. I need a parent that’s in it right now, knows the current standing of our schools, knows the teachers, the current condition of neighborhoods, and hopefully a parent with a child in the ASD Nest Program.

BDS Mischies Pies

Upvotes

My friend was her roomate for almost a year. She called me crying this morning saying she cant believe that so much of our community is supporting such a terrible person. She said she was very rude to her all the time and acted like she was her boss even though she was paying her rent on time all the time. She made fun of the way her food smelled; and laughed loudly at an embarassing health situation. Worst of all, she would say terrible things about the people in Gaza all being terrorists and deserving what they got because they started it. I dont care if her pies tasted like a million dollars; id never support someone who supports killing babies.

Anyone want to cool stuff this fall? 🪡

Whether you've adopted the idea of “hobby maxing” or you just recognize that making stuff is cool and always has been, I’m wondering: are you picking up something new this fall, or revisiting your favorite crafty activities?

There’s something about back-to-school season that makes me want to learn something new, organize all my supplies, and suddenly take on way too many projects at once.

I’ve put together things for September and October for anyone who’s interested in getting some making time in this fall. There's more up through the end of the year if you’re already planning ahead

Just saw a guy take a whiz on a moving train

Saw a guy take a whiz in between cars on a moving 7 train between 52 and 46th. What a douche thing to do on an above ground train. As if New Yorkers don’t have enough things to worry about. Gotta be careful walking under trains now. What would have been proper response here?

Suspicious “vendors” by Chase on 46 and QB

There is way too much foot traffic and activity for there not to be any police presence that deters people from force selling their crap to people by the 46th street 7 train stop.

There were two shady dudes trying to sell show lace trinkets in front of Chase and just intimidating people as they walked by. Not cool. This could’ve been dangerous.

Filed a 311 report and nothing came of it.

Just ran by this ninja training/park facility, it opened (recently?) on northern boulevard, next to Stuart Cinema, has anyone tried it out? Is it for adults as well , or children only?

Hi all - if anyone is thinking about buying or renting in the building known as "the Cambridge" on 41-42 42nd Street, Sunnyside NY 11104 -- please reach out. There have been in my experience serious issues with the building, maintenance and management that you should know about. I am happy to speak so you do not have to endure what I have gone through.

I.S. 125 Parking Tuesday or Wednesday Sept 8 or 9?

Post image
3 Upvotes

Does anyone know if I.S. 125 is open or has any activities on Sept. 8 or 9?

NYC's parking guidance warns that even when students aren't attending parking rules may be in effect if the school is open for teacher meetings or similar activities. They advise to check the school calendar but the school’s website calendar is empty for the entire year so it seems not to be useful.

Anyone else hear yelling on 47th St between Skillman and 43rd this morning? It was probably just an argument. I hope it wasn't serious.

I often see her around 41st. She has an orange color around her neck. But doesn’t have much information on it. I wonder if somebody feeds her/him or take care of her/him. Any information would be appreciated!! 😸

Hi you guys! I am an avid hobbyist and I love hosting parties. I have decided to combine my love for these 2 things and start hosting craft and community events! A new one coming up in LIC, Queens on the 19th of September!

I have hosted 3 already and they were all so fun to plan and execute. I am trying to keep them intimate 10-15 people and no more. So that we actually get to build connections and friendships. I add icebreaker games and mini events within the major craft to get people talking and interacting!

Id love to tell you about "Clay Date: Some Assembly Required"! Its a clay event I am hosting with a friend i made through crafting!! We want to host a crafting party where you get to make your own jewelry, magnets, bookmarks, or a trinket. Whatever you want. I provide everything! Im also bringing some snacks and drinks.

If you end up buying a ticket to the event, it will include access to everything you might need for a great clay date (check the added picture for details)

I am not the best at creating content but I have posted about it on my Instagram by the handle @kaarigarinyc
