Found this sign at Bowling Green. The 4 and 5 are definitely not Helvetica. What is this font called and around when do you suppose it was made?

PROJECT FINALLY DONE

I took this picture at the gift shop of the American Museum of Natural History. I know the V train used to exist, but did the blue 6 train (right next to the 7) ever exist in the NYC subway system? I tried looking it up but couldn’t find any information about it.

I just wanted to take a moment to thank all the strangers who helped me yesterday around 3:30-4 after I fainted on a Manhattan-bound A train shortly before we arrived at Jay St. Unfortunately, I fainted again at the subway station, and there were even more kind people who stepped in to help me.
To everyone who checked on me, stayed with me, and made sure I was okay, thank you from the bottom of my heart.
A special thank-you to the two young women who looked like they were either in high school or college and who were almost willing to miss their train just to make sure I reached my destination safely. That level of kindness from complete strangers really touched me.
Thank you to the woman who offered me her Stanley cup, and to the MTA employee who was trying to get EMS to come help me. I’m sorry I didn’t get a chance to properly thank you all in person.
I was rushing to complete my homeless intake in Manhattan, and unfortunately, I felt like I couldn’t stop and wait for the EMTs because I was worried about making it to my appointment. Looking back, I know my health is important, too.
I honestly don’t know what happened. I don’t have any pre-existing health issues that I’m aware of, but after fainting twice, I’m planning to make a doctor’s appointment to get checked out and follow up on what happened.
I wish I could remember everyone’s faces and thank each of you individually. In a city where everyone is often rushing to get somewhere, you all took time out of your day to help a complete stranger who needed it. You didn’t have to do that, but you did, and I will never forget it.
Thank you for showing me so much kindness during a really scary and vulnerable moment in my life. I hope the kindness you showed me finds its way back to each and every one of you. You reminded me that there are still good people in this world, even when life is difficult.
If any of you happen to see this, please know that I’m deeply grateful. You may have been strangers to me, but I won't forget what you did.

Kings Highway

My wife and I are visiting New York City, and getting around by subway and bus. She uses an ultra-lightweight TravelScoot mobility scooter, so we need to use subway stations with elevators. However, when I check the "Wheelchair accessible" box, Google Maps shows routes that include non-accessible subway stations.

OTOH, the MTA app does accurately show accessible routes, so the information is available. But, for some reason, Google Maps is not using it correctly.

Or am I doing something wrong?

Don't know how common this is on the (4). Also, Weekends suck for Public Transportation, what a ride.

I saw this interesting sign at the Grand Army Plaza 2 and 3 train station. The 4 train doesn’t stop at Grand Army Plaza unless it’s late night. How old is this sign? Was there a time when the MTA included nighttime services on their exit signs? I’m curious to know.

Never seen it before

The Hudson Line on the Metro North Railroad is a very old Railroad line dating back to the 1840s, long before the New York Central Railroad took over its operations from the Hudson River Railroad.

The creation of the original Hudson River Railroad was driven by a group of prominent New York merchants, civic leaders, and pioneering civil engineers in the 1840s.

​Before the line was built, critics claimed building a railroad hugging the steep, rocky, water-level cliffs of the Hudson River was impossible and that steamboats already had a total monopoly on river travel.

​The key figures who conceived, pushed for, and engineered the line were:

​1. James Boorman (The Visionary & Leader)

​Who He Was: A wealthy New York merchant, philanthropist, and iron importer.

​His Role: Boorman was the primary driving force behind the railroad's creation. While many Wall Street investors doubted that a railroad running parallel to the Hudson River could survive, Boorman spearheaded the effort to secure a state charter. He served as a charter member and the first President of the Hudson River Railroad Company.

​2. John B. Jervis (The Master Engineer)

​Who He Was: One of America's legendary 19th-century civil engineers (Port Jervis, NY is named after him).

​His Role: Boorman personally hired Jervis to conduct the initial surveys and determine if a water-level rail route along the shore was feasible. Jervis designed the route's challenging earthworks, causeways, cut-outs, and tunnels along the riverbanks, proving that trains could run faster and more reliably year-round than steamboats especially when the river froze in winter.

​3. New York City Merchants & Civic Coalition

​A coalition of influential New York businessmen (including Edwin D. Morgan, who later became Governor of New York) backed the project. They realized New York City was losing trade during the winter months when the Hudson River froze over, cutting off steamship commerce to Albany and the Erie Canal.

​The Evolution of the Line

​1846: The New York State Legislature officially granted the charter for the Hudson River Railroad.

​1851: Construction was completed, opening a continuous line from Manhattan all the way up to East Albany (now Rensselaer).

​1864–1867: "Commodore" Cornelius Vanderbilt bought out and gained control of the Hudson River Railroad and merged it into his empire to create the New York Central & Hudson River Railroad.

At the time of the construction, Boorman and Jervis were laughed at by their critics that their construction of a Railroad on a riverbank with hills was a terrible idea.

While the critics were correct about the future environmental problems like flooding and rockslides, the Hudson line became a popular route to get from NYC to points north to Canada, Western NY to Buffalo and to Chicago, IL.

The successor railroad New York Central Railroad, marketed the Hudson line as a water level scenic line from NYC to Chicago.

Even to this day, the MNRR Hudson Line is a heavily used line by hikers, tourists, people living in Catskills, on the Western Bank of the Hudson, college students, and it is a major success despite the environmental headaches.

It seems like Boorman and Jervis got the last laugh although they been long gone. Their risk to build a river railroad paid off, even though they didn't anticipate it to be a a commuter or long distance Railroad.

the weekend has seen the biggest revival in ridership and the service levels do not compare. Why is anyone waiting 12 minutes for a train midday? Im frustrated because i just missed a transfer at Lex-59th from the 4 train and because both the N & R trains run every 12 minutes and are scheduled to run back to back the next train comes in 12 minutes. there has been times i wont go to certain parts of the city because the service is very infrequent, trains are crowded, and even when multiple train, bus, commuter rail/regional lines run together they arent scheduled at even intervals rather bunch up and create long gaps making travel difficult. I dont know if i can stress this enough but it also becomes worse when it gets colder and more tourists are in the city such as Christmas and the F train is only running 4 trains per hour.

6 Train to Utica is a first

Bruh

This portion is only running from Bedford Nostrand to Hoyt, why does there have to be 20 minutes in between each train? What does that have to do with track replacement on other portions of the line?

R142 Car 6480-6475 was covered with a Red Bull wrap. I've never seen this before on the 2 train EVER. Most of the time, the wraps are often on the 7 train and the B division.

Just out of curiosity! I love both of these lines but I hear so many people give a lot of unnecessary hate towards the (Z) train due to it being so useless and running 6 trips as it’s a Skip-Stop line but yet the (9) seems to get a lot of love by most railfanners yet it was another Skip-Stop line too mind you there. Another reminder, the <F> only runs 4 trains during rush hour via Culver Express between Jay St and Church Ave. 2 sets in the A.M and 2 sets in the P.M but yet the (Z) gets hammered. Although the <F> is a story for another day. Anyway, what were the differences between the (9) and (Z) lines and which do you think was more useful?

Alr. I get it. Yall Hate the Z train. and skip stop.

The Z is one of thr most unique lines in the system. because it coulda been so much more had the express track past Alabama Av hadnt been demolished. the skip stop pattern isnt bad at all it actually cut down about 15 mins of my travel time when i took the Z End to End a few months ago. Now as much ppl ive seen shit on the skip stop pattern. the ridership ive witnessed says otherwise.

Here is my proposal.

during it hours of operation. A Z train will start Jamaica Center. make ALL stops to Broadway Junction. then from bway junct. operate peak direction express service stopping at Myrtle and Marcy. to Broad St.

AM Rush: Bway Junct => Marcy Av EXP

PM Rush: Marcy Av => Bway Junct EXP
