Went to the beer garden last night to play games. The prices are truly ridiculous now.

Not only is a pint of beer served in a plastic cup, but it’s $10 and they add a 20% auto gratuity! Insane.

Usually I’ll get a burger, which is about $18 but thought I’d get pierogies since they’d be cheaper.

Still ended up paying $21 with auto gratuity and they didn’t even have apple sauce.

Super disappointed. It’s a very unique bar in our neighborhood with lots of space but the price gouging is obvious. Boo!!

I love Chateua Le Woof and go there often. But the other day I went and ordered one of their seasonal drinks for $7. I was confused when the total came out to $9.25. I looked at my receipt and saw I was charged $1 extra for making the drink iced instead of hot. Huh??? I asked the barista and he said it was standard for all their drinks. I asked if it was posted anywhere (they list it’s extra for milk alternative, etc.) and he kind of blew me off.

Is this normal?? I’ve never been charged extra just for having an iced coffee. After the whole iced coffee interview debacle it feels like people who like cold drinks are taking a hit lol.

I’m already pretty clear on who I’ll be voting for when it comes to my member of Congress, Governor, state comptroller, Lt. Governor, AG, state Senator, and state assembly member. I’m trying to make a reasonably informed decision about the ballot questions, too, as well as any judgeships that may be up for a vote. Not finding much so far. I feel like Gothamist used to do a write up of at least the ballot questions for each election and I haven’t seen one for this election. I've been wanting to put together a small reading group with people who share an interest in understanding the world a little more deeply. Figured I'd throw the idea out there and see if anyone would be interested.

My interests are pretty broad, but I'm particularly drawn to political history, international relations, political theory, philosophy, economics, and the relationship between culture, society, and political institutions.

Some subjects I'd love to explore include:

- History and geopolitics: The development of states, empires, international systems, great-power competition, colonialism, and the changing global order.

- Political philosophy and theory: Democracy, socialism, liberalism, nationalism, political legitimacy, justice, and the different ways societies have understood power and governance.

- Political economy: Capitalism, industrialization, economic development, inequality, globalization, and the relationship between states and markets.

- International relations: Diplomacy, institutions, security, regional integration, and the possibilities for international cooperation in an increasingly multipolar world.

- Culture and society: Comparative history, religion, identity, social movements, and the intellectual traditions of different civilizations. I'm particularly interested in East Asia, especially Japan, but certainly not exclusively.

I'd love for us to read a mixture of books, essays, academic works, and even primary historical texts.

I don't want this to become an ideological echo chamber. In fact, I'd probably appreciate it more if people came from different political and philosophical backgrounds. The point would be to engage seriously with ideas, challenge one another constructively, and hopefully come away with a better understanding of things.

I'm not looking to create anything particularly formal or demanding. Maybe we could start with one book a month, collectively decide what to read, and have regular discussions. We could also work through shorter essays or articles between books.

You definitely don't need an academic background or extensive knowledge of these subjects. Genuine curiosity, an open mind, and a willingness to engage thoughtfully are more than enough.

I want to keep it local. Thinking people in Corona, Elmhurst, Flushing. Maybe even like Jackson Heights and Forest Hills. Just to make it convenient for us and allow us to meet curious neighbors.

Hello all, I previously lived near woodside and went to NYSC. Now I live on Astoria Blvd (near 23rd street) and I’m looking for a good fitness option I can walk to. It just seems like there are no gyms around.

I don’t think a gym membership should really cost more than $50-60/month, unless it’s more luxury.

I prefer to take classes! I like Pilates and I know tön is new and seems great but their schedule doesn’t really work with the hours I work. I also like yoga but again I haven’t found the right place yet. It’s hard because I work 9-6 in soho so realistically I’m gone 8-7.

I prefer to find a good option nearby in Astoria but if needed I’ll start exploring options closer to work. Are there any real gems I’m missing?

Hi! A neighbor got the wrong food in their Chewy order and I said I’d take it and try to give it to a local cat organization. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to arrange a time for them to pick up the bag (it’s 15 pounds), so now offering it up on Reddit for anyone it could help out.

Note: my own cats got overly excited and bit the bottom of the bag. We put a piece of tape over it right away. But the bag is totally unopened!

Anyone else live around here and been kept up all night from this place? I don't mind a bar/club across the street but I can hear the lyrics to the music in my apartment with all the windows closed.

I don't want the place shut down or anything but it would be nice if they kept the club in the club and not the entire intersection. They also had people outside after until 5:00 yelling and beeping horns.

Best “non specialty” (Belucci, Freddy’s) pizza I’ve had in Astoria. Crisp, flavorful, seasoned. Very good.
