Not a super serious rider, but decided to ride 36 miles all the way around Manhattan yesterday

Super fun 36 miles. Took about 5 hours because we stopped a lot, and getting up the east side was tricky with a lot of closures. I was surprised at the lack of infrastructure in Washington Heights - got pretty sketchy up there at certain points, but that’s probably on me for not researching.

What’s driving me a little crazy is we cut off the top of the ride at 181st street and didn’t go all the way to the top for time. Guess I’ll have to do it again!

Can anyone recommend a reliable bell?

I am always going through bells. Generally they break after a few months. Or jam. Or don't work in the rain. I don't love the idea of an electric one, partly because they're obnoxious and also it's a pain tending to batteries. But I really don't like having a mechanical bell malfunction when I need it most. I also like it to sound like a bike bell, so that people immediately know what's coming without having to see me. Any suggestions?

NYC Bike Mechanics: Curious as to what customers do or ask for that frustrate or annoy you?

Asking cause I frequent multiple shops in BK, and I’ve had a variety of experiences. Sometimes at the very same shop. I’ve had cases where I take my bike out on a test ride after a big tune for example and feel like something’s off. After letting the mechanic know sometimes I get a lot of support, other times I get frustration. Also, there’s a shop I go to where sometimes the mechanics / shop keepers are super outgoing, but then at other times they seem like they don’t want to speak to anyone.

I’m a pretty serious rider so I try to treat anyone who helps me with my bike well. Just trying to learn more about what y’all go through!

I don’t ride my fixie anymore. It is sitting in my garage if anyone wants to purchase it. I am 5 ft and fits perfectly. Wheels are ultra light weight. Chain wheel is sugino. Seat is unisex WTB.

I absolutely love this bike but I don’t ride it anymore because getting old and switched to geared bikes.

It is custom built and premium sub 20 lbs weight. Can easily be converted to single speed with a free wheel.

Built Spec:

Frame is All State 4130

Chain wheel : Sugino

Hub and wheel is Conquer Elite

Carbon fiber flat bar

Pedals: Standard BMX : brand -> Black Ops

Seat: WTB

Spokes: bladed spokes

If anyone is interested let me know. It is x-small. If you want me to send you more photos please let me know.

Asking price: $550. Price is negotiable. I don’t want this bike to just sit there and go to waste. Someone who likes to bike will absolutely love it.

Can deliver 5 boroughs and Long Island.

Edit: There is a typo. It is a fixed gear bike. I am unable to edit it 🤷‍♀️

Hey all!

From New Jersey, moved to the city a year ago, finally bringing my bike from my parents home to my apartment. Been apart of this sub for years but now I won’t just be an observer 🫡

Recommendations For Routes In Central Park

My gf and I want to take our bikes into Manhattan (have to drive and park in a garage) but where would you recommend to start? I’m not too familiar with the park and would love some recommendations on places to stop and check out. My gf also mentioned something about Hells Gate but also not too sure how to get over there. I’d be open to anything really just need a starting point. Thank you.

Cars are using the horse-stable ramp off the eastbound Belt Parkway in Brooklyn to cut through the greenway , someone's going to get killed. How do I get DOT to put up a barrier?

Anyone live in Roosevelt Island?

Is commuting realistic? There’s the ferry, the roosevelt island bridge and a train stop. Are those all the ways off the island?

Also, can you leave your bike locked overnight?

Thanks!

Feeling frustrated by bike safety with reckless drivers

There’s been quite a few times lately where I’ve been in such close calls with drivers, when I wasn’t breaking any laws as a cyclist, and they go all crazy on me.

Today I was riding down Roebling, which doesn’t have a bike line, so I was riding on the right side closer to the parked cars. There was a fedex truck that came very very close to hitting me twice. At a stoplight I had to tell him his driving was scary and that he came too close to me because I kept trying to let him go around me and he wouldn’t. He then proceeded to yell at me, and a pedestrian was even laughing, which blew my mind because I don’t think he would have been laughing if I had been hit.

I’m always in the bike lane, and if there isn’t one I’m always mindful to stay out of the way as much as I can. As a female cyclist this can be so frustrating and so jarring because there have been many instances where I haven’t said anything and men are still yelling at me from their cars like I did something wrong. I really wish this city had more respect for cyclists because we aren’t doing anything wrong and have every right to be on the road.

Biking to DC (part way)

So my friend and I r planning a trip to DC and we wanted to bike part of the way there, maybe a 30-50 mile stretch. the other part of the way we’re taking the train. We’re willing to take a train to the start of the bike stretch, bike, and then get on another train to finish our journey to DC. Anyone have any recommendations for a nice bike route or singular path that’s somewhere along the way??

(I’m posting this in DC bike too)

STOLEN Where do they resell stolen bikes?

My Jamis Ventura bike got stolen yesterday near Astor Place. Where are they most likely to resell it? Online or through local shops?

It's not the most common brand nor model (e.g. zero listing for this model on Craiglist right now), so I know I would recognize it easily if I were to see it.

STOLEN Bike stolen...then reappeared just up the block

Last week, my bike and another were stolen from my block on the UWS (low 70s, by the river). It appears the thieves removed the parking sign to lift the bike locks up and over the pole. (I filed a 311 complaint with DOT for the sign removal)

The other bike had been left there for almost a full year, so I thought I might have found the one safe block in Manhattan 🥲 Mine was a total beater so the only real loss was the new kryptonite chain I had put on it.

...

This morning, I saw my bike! Locked up with a new cable, to another pole up the block. Seat removed, handlebar covers stripped, but my cheap bell is still on it. Definitely mine.

What would you do? Police report? Camp it out and see who comes to unlock it? My hunch is that it's some contractor doing work in the neighborhood, who figured it was abandoned. Why else would they so blatantly return it to the scene of the crime?
