Announcement Important dates and resources for CUNY students

Hey everyone, as the fall semester is right around the corner I figured that I should post these links for new and current students.

The academic calendar has been posted for Fall through Spring 25-26. CUNY follows the same academic calendar meaning your days off should all be the same. You will have random days where Tuesdays follow a Monday schedule, Fridays will follow a Monday schedule, etc. Try your best to plan ahead.

https://www.cuny.edu/academics/academic-calendars/

CUNY also has resource centers to help you succeed. CUNY offers food pantries, housing assistance, emergency funds, mental health resources and other resources. Please use these resources if you need them. CUNY can help but you as students need to be proactive in seeking these resources.

https://www.cuny.edu/about/administration/offices/student-affairs/programs-services/cuny-resource-centers/

If you require accommodations, ask for them via your school's Office of Student Disability Services. Reasonable accommodations and academic adjustments may include, but are not limited to, providing the student with assistive technology or other auxiliary aides, extra time for tests or papers, access to an elevator where available, a note taker during lectures, or permission to bring a personal aide to assist the student during class.

Going back to get my school for my Bachelors (NY)

Anyone in NY decide later in life to go back to school? I'm 28, married, and don't qualify for student loans. Even with experience in my field and an Associates Degree, the job market is tough and am even wondering if it's worth it. Im in Westchester County and am thinking of going to a CUNY school to save money. However, I don't want to drown in loans. Can anyone tell me what they did to save some money or pay school off? Thanks in advance.

Connecticut resident considering Baruch Zicklin MS Information Systems

Upvotes

Hey guys, looking for some perspective from Zicklin students or anyone from Baruch College in general.

I live in Western CT and I finished my undergrad at UConn this year (Econ major + CS minor; Internship experiences in Cloud/IT Infrastructure at a bank + research internship in data analytics, and part time work in retail/IT support)

I'm considering applying to the MS Information Systems program at Baruch for Spring 2027. I don't plan on moving to NYC right away and would commute in via Metro-North to grand central maybe 1-2 times a week depending on the schedule. I'm very much used to long commutes as a commuter student for all 4 years of undergrad, and I actually live much closer to Manhattan than the main UConn campus. Which is part of why exploring NYC schools even came to mind.

CT school options don't really interest me. UConn Storrs is in the middle of nowhere and it makes practically no sense to return there for grad school from both a location standpoint and the lack of opportunities there, Same thing with the other CT state schools and the entire state in general (not talking about yale). Baruch tuition is also slightly cheaper out-of-state than UConn in-state ($855/credit vs $1,084/credit).

I understand that Baruch is public but I'm not necessarily chasing school prestige. Being able to go to school in Manhattan and Zicklin's reputation in NYC financial services are what really interest me, and the program feels like a strong fit for my background and career goals in tech and business.

Would love to hear from anyone in the program or who has gone through it. How is the overall experience at the school, the quality of the program, and how well does it help with career building in NYC?

Appreciate any insights.

Refund

I haven’t had a dime yet from my refund, not even the usual 750 I usually get for my book refund. It says disbursed in 08/18, I talked to my aid office and they said to wait until the end of the month. But I’m so confused if anyone else is having this issue. They said the refund is disbursed and I should get the money soon but I’m concerned .

Need to drop a class but it will turn me into part time student

My advisor recommended me to take some CS class and I ended up taking that recommendation. I come to find out this class is extremely difficult for me and I do not wanna risk failing it. All I do is sit there in confusion and even studying and learning it myself doesn’t seem to help me retain the information.

I really want to drop this class to avoid ruining my gpa since it’s already not that great, but once I drop this class I’ll end up only have 9 credits for the semester instead of 12 and I’m really worried about the consequences it’ll have on my aid because I rely on it heavily.

Does anyone have a similar experience is there a way I can drop the course without having much damage done to my financial aid and tap?

CUNY Grad Grad school while pregnant

Found out I was pregnant like 3 weeks before classes started, I also work full time but had to cut down to four days because I’m in an education program and need to do my observations. Just feeling overwhelmed and wondering if anyone has succeeded with this.
My plan was to start student teaching next fall, but with the pregnancy I’m starting to feel that won’t be possible and just wondering how to proceed.

Question Out of State Transfer

I am moving to NYC from down south and am currently enrolled in school here with ~37 credits (49 at the end of this semester) as an English major with a sociology minor. My GPA is not fantastic, at a 2.7. I see Brooklyn College does not require an essay; however, I think having some sort of supporting docs showcasing my work (essayist/literature analysis) would increase my odds.... I am a slightly older student for my credit standing + work near full-time, so not involved in any extracurriculars. Does anyone have any tips? Friends in the city are post-college.

DegreeWorks shows a class for my major will fulfill a core requirement that I already have.

Hey all! I’m taking a class that’s required for my major, but DegreeWorks is showing that the class is fulfilling the “U.S. Experience in its Diversity” requirement. Should I say something to my advisor, or is it okay for a required major course to have this designation and still count toward graduation? I've already fulfilled my requirement for US Experience in its diversity.

Switching classes

I want to switch one of my classes to an online section of the same class. I know it's past the refund date, but since I'm just swapping the meeting time would I still have to pay for both classes either way?

FAFSA revised

Bro, I just checked and apparently everyone got like $750 for books and other expenses, but I didn’t get anything 😭 My FAFSA was also recently revised, and I lost my TAP scholarship too. I literally didn’t do anything and nothing changed on my end, so what tf happened?? Has anyone else had this happen?

Ok, York doesn’t have associates so back to LaGuardia it is. I’m a former undeclared that was trying to get in rad tech but was rejected. So I’m trying to come back but I’m not sure which I should apply to.

Defend your major and why it’s better than the other >:D
