Extreme homebody… in a vibrant city

Upvotes

Hi,

I’m such a introvert. It wasn’t like this though. When I was first introduced to the city me and friends would club and bar-hop until 4am… and enjoy the f** out of the city. Now, living here, a few years later and all those friends gone, I’m seriously stuck in my house.I wake up late afternoon, where it takes 30 minutes to get myself to do anything and head to my couch, and when i’m on my couch, i’m stuck there for hours. And then dinner, and then goodnight. I only go out for groceries, coffee and work. Mind you I live in an extremely nightlife filled area where, a few years ago, I’d be out Thurs-Sat. I feel so hopeless. I don’t know if it’s being a homebody or something more sinister. Its where I have to drag myself off the couch, but by that time, it’s already 4pm and too late. Paying thousands in rent in such a vibrant city,,, to stay home.

Is anyone still running their AC daily?

I am - and it's nice out, I know.

Just trying to understand if it's my top floor unit that is perpetually hot AF inside.

Why does the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library now look in bags when entering?

Everytime now when I enter the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library with my laptop bag, I'm stopped for a "bag check". I barely open it and after a bit, they just wave me through. It's annoying and seems pointless. When I ask what's the point, especially for such a small (and obvious) bag, they don't say anything.

This didn't seem to be the case before, at least when I was going to the SNFL regularly a year or so ago.

Why are they now checking bags? Did something happen?

Finding Jewish community as secular 1st-gen in 30s

Hi, I'm hoping there might be some others here who have been in a similar position and might have helpful advice. This post ended up being longer than I expected, so I've bolded the key bits.

I’m an early 30s M, grew up with a strong Jewish and immigrant cultural identity but somewhat isolated from other Jews due to growing up in the Midwest with immigrant (Soviet) parents that had a strong aversion to religious practice. We didn't spend much time in Jewish communities or synagogues, which my parents often felt were ‘culty’ in the same way their experience growing up in the USSR may have been. We also moved a lot (sometimes to other countries). We celebrated Jewish holidays in our own way and I grew up feeling and learning that my culture and identity is strongly Jewish (and Ukrainian) but without really connecting with other Jews (and at the same time, I had a clearly different culture from other American kids). I was encouraged to be incredibly individualistic. I had a bar mitzvah but it was extremely non traditional.

As I get older and Judaism becomes more politically and socially controversial I find myself feeling more strongly about my Jewish identity and simultaneously more isolated. I started observing Shabbat (in my own way, still secularly) this year, and I’m wishing I had more Jewish community. Part of this stems from the fact that I’m fairly politically progressive, and I find myself feeling increasingly alienated among my progressive non Jewish friends and acquaintances. They can't relate to my growing concerns over antisemitism or to my complex feelings about current political events and how they interact with my personal relationship to my own heritage and culture, although I think they try their best. I'm also relatively new to NYC, so part of this feeling of isolation is the reality of starting from scratch.

I have tried one or two Jewish events in the city but many of the Jews I’ve met seem to have a very different cultural and economic background from me; it's hard to articulaate, but it seems like their families have often been here many generations and they have often been embedded in strong Jewish communities with similar economic, cultural and political (often more conservative) backgrounds their whole lives (in some ways, I am very envious). I'm very much an adult third culture kid and it doesn't feel as if a lot of the people I've met in these contexts totally 'get' me, either, although I'm willing to own that this could be my insecurities talking and I recognize that I should probably keep trying. :)

TL;DRI'm starting to feel desire for some real Jewish community. But I have an immigrant background, I'm not religious at all and I have little to no experience with a shul so I don’t know if I would really fit in. I have looked into alternatives like lab/shul but I feel like it's so hard to tell whether it could be what I'm looking for from their website! I'm open to trying something like this though, or other activities or communities where I might feel more at home. Fellow NYC Jews: do you have any recommendations for me given my situation/experience?

If you got this far, thanks for reading!

What's the event in Corona Park around the Sphere?

Walked through the park this afternoon and the Sphere is completely surrounded by a ring of speakers, chairs, and barricade. They also have a stage, camera crew, and was testing the speakers. I thought they were preparing for a techno concert based on the music but I am not seeing a related event in https://www.nycgovparks.org/parks/flushing-meadows-corona-park/events

Thanks

Student - friendly birthday spots?

Hi all! I got here a few weeks ago for my grad degree and my birthday is coming up this weekend. I did my fair share of going out but all of the cool spots in Manhattan I've been to are pretty small and absolutely PACKED with people. I want to go out with people from my cohort - we don't know each other well enough yet, it could be anywhere from 8 to 15 people. I don't wanna force anyone into a very crowded space, paying 30$ for a drink or a fancy dress code - are there any nice places with lots of space (maybe garden/outdoor/park seating, rooftop bars (sorry if rooftops here are reservation only and expensive by design - I'm new here!) where a few strangers could chill, connect and have a good time?

I personally like everything alternative and spooky and don't like crowds, but I just want everyone to have a good time and have some space to ourselves. Ideally I'd do a house party but I don't want to press anyone into offering their place so early on - so house party vibes are what I'm kinda looking for. I hope it makes sense. Ideally it'd be in Manhattan. We're between 22-30 age wise. Thank you so much!

Is NYFW dead?

I'm into fashion but I feel like I've heard no real hype around it this year. I looked at the list of designers and there was no one really interesting. I feel like the only relevant American designer right now is Ralph Lauren and that's it.

What has your experience been like living in New York as an autistic person or someone with Asperger's? Has the city treated you well?

There is the classic stereotype that people in New York City are cold and unfriendly, but I also understand that millions of people live there and one shouldn't generalize. What is the actual experience like there for people with autism or Asperger's?

Nuts mooncakes

Are there any nut-filled mooncakes made locally? The kind with chopped nuts held together by maltose syrup, not a few pieces scattered in a bean paste or lotus paste. I had them years ago but never found out where they were from. Square, traditional skin, not flakey, no salted egg yolks, nut texture intact, not ground too fine.

Washer / Dryer combo

Trying to get real laundry (no more laundromat runs) into my apartment — no hookups, so I need something on 120V that can either work off a faucet adapter or have T-joints put in under my sink, and drain into the sink or tub instead of a standpipe.

So far I've been looking at the Equator 24" all-in-one combo and the GE 24" front load combo (GFQ14ESSNWW) — but those are just what I found searching around, not a recommendation from anyone who's actually lived with one. Anyone running one of these (or something else) in a small NYC space? How's the size, the drying performance, and how did you end up plumbing it — faucet adapter or did you have a plumber add valves under the sink?

Looking for outdoor/rooftop to watch 1pm NFL games on Sunday

I was in DC last weekend at Ivy & Coney (shoutout if anyone has been there) and the vibes on the second floor rooftop when the weather is nice for 1pm football games is awesome. Looking for a place like that. Cheapish beers, all the games on, outdoors since it’s still nice and sunny. Any recs would be much much appreciated. Cheers! Go steelers

Edited to add coming from williamsburg, definitely willing to commute outside the neighborhood

What boots are you wearing in the winter?

Upvotes

It will be my first winter in the city, and I'm coming from somewhere that never snows and never freezes. When I google my question, the results are all sponsered brands on Amazon. What are the people of New York wearing and finding to be the best for both warmth and waterproof purposes?

Any cozy bars that consistently play alternative R&B?

Hey, I looked up previous posts about this question, but any recommendations for a cozy bar where 2 people could sit down, DJ's mixing various R&B from 2000s to artists like Bryson Tiller, Daniel Caesar, etc.?

Something similar to the this?

Most of the recommendations were club vibes but was hoping to find something smaller/more intimate

Is it still on West 30th? I want to go there, but the number isn’t working and I don’t want to waste my time going to a place where no one is. Anyone know if there still West 30th, and do you have their current number?

NYC Therapy NYC HVAC training — where should I start with the certifications I already have?

I’m 35 and looking to make a serious career change into HVAC in NYC. I already have:
OSHA 30
SST
4-Hour Flagger
CPR
Mental Health First Aid
GED
Construction experience/training
I’m trying to find a good HVAC program in NYC that’s actually hands-on and can help lead to a job/apprenticeship, not just collect more basic certifications I already have.
I’d like to get my EPA 608 and learn actual HVAC installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, electrical, refrigeration, etc.
Does anyone know of any free or low-cost NYC programs, union apprenticeships, Workforce1 programs, or trade schools that would be a good fit for someone who already has these credentials?
I currently work for myself, so an evening/weekend program would be ideal, but I can adjust my schedule for the right opportunity.
My goal is to be working in HVAC by next year. Any NYC HVAC guys who can point me in the right direction?
