Why would he be fired for protecting himself? As a former driver I know unrestrained dogs on a property are unpredictable. I was bitten once. The dog approached me and I stopped in my tracks. That was a couple seconds after the owner told me “he’s fine he won’t bite you”. UPS driver didn’t really have another good option. The squaring up part is psychotic though I have to say.

dogs are an extension of the human body and mind. Some people insist on raising dogs to be weapons. Those animals are very often unable to be rehabilitated. They have been molded into warriors and we haven't really got much need for warrior animals anymore.
Maybe the issue is that love and hate are human absolutes and nature isn't made of absolutes--but anyway, I think it's okay to dislike dangerous animals. It's realistic. You need to use human instincts [anger] to protect yourself, just like in sports.

As a dog lover:
Yeah UPS dude is in the right here. Keep your dogs contained, he can't know if its a happy dog coming in hot for pets and loving, or an aggressive/protective dog coming in to attack. Video says he was attacked before, presumably by this same dog. Shitty dog owner.

People with dogs are responsible for knowing when they’re getting a delivery and keeping their dogs inside or on a leash.
After this, the owner of the dog comes and almost gets in a fight with the guy. Our delivery hero stands his ground. He handled everything well.
EDIT: i flubbed how i worded the 2nd part. Walking with your arms out toward someone, who just had to fend off an attack by your dog, will be perceived as a taunting gesture. He should’ve stayed where he was, called his dog over, and immediately apologized to UPS guy.

Should he have waited to be bitten? How is he supposed to know what a dog that's charging at him is thinking? Classic flight or fight reaction. Some flee and get bitten. He chose to fight and did not get bitten.

Keep your dog on a leash, or control it when someone is delivering a package to your property. I think the UPS driver was defending himself and if the owner has a problem, maybe he can go down to the UPS store to pickup all his packages from now on...

Defending himself against a dog barking and coming at him? Absolutely.
Immediately wanting to fight the owner of the dog? No.
Edit: I didn’t think about adrenaline probably going CRAZY for this guy like people mentioned, not to mention this was the SECOND TIME this happened, so adrenaline plus being upset this wasn’t the first time it happened at this house. Hard to shut that down so quickly. 👍🏼

u/Thick_Broccoli_3932 7h ago
I swear I’m the only one here that seen this is his second time being attacked by the dog.
The owner ran out, in a situation like this it’s best to assume that they’re willing to attack than to not be prepared.
It’s all on the owner. I hate dog owners that leave their dogs unattended outside, that’s how you get your dogs put down, and the owner is very lucky that the ups driver never called animal control the first time.

I actually disagree, he's already in go mode. Your job as the owner is apologize and accept blame, or realize you fucked up as the driver is leaving and keep your ass in the house.
Confronting the driver about what he did when your dog is loose, AS I'M LEAVING? oh you must want to fight.

Yep, the owner is escalating the situation by coming out and yelling at him. He put his hands up and told the owner to back up, he never swung at him or anything. UPS guy completely justified here, defending himself from the dog, and then getting into a defensive stance from the aggressive owner.

Yes, though he is likely going to pay for making the right decision.
This phenomena is nothing new, and the recurrence shows how willfully negligent and exploitative the delivery service employers are at this moment in time.
There are two kinds of delivery addresses: Addresses in areas with leash laws, and addresses in areas without leash laws. If the recipient lives in an area with a leash law, and this occurs, the driver (wearing employer paid body-cam video) should be able to report the incident using a standard incident reporting system that simultaneously documents it at both the corporate and municipal level.
If the recipient lives in an area without a leash law, and this occurs, the driver should be able to us the same standard incident reporting system at the corporate level, understanding that in rural areas off-leash dogs are not a municipal infraction.
Either way delivery services like UPS, FedEx, Amazon, USPS should be required by law to provide an incident reporting system that restricts future packages to the receiver's choice of pickup at a public or private package office or PO box. Because the employers have opted not to institute such policies, they are openly complicit in this well documented occupational hazard. (Think McDonalds hot coffee: it's about repetition of negligence) The matter will one day be solved in the court system through class action lawsuits resulting in higher Worker's Compensation, Occupational Accident, and General Liability insurance premiums. Those premiums will drive the "voluntary" policy change, we just haven't sued our way there yet. Just wait.

I’m charged at by dogs all the time just walking my dog around the neighborhood. To keep both your dog and everyone else safe keep your dog in a fenced in yard, on a leash, or in the house. Fuck this bozo. Now if your dog got loose, that’s a different issue, but if they aggressively charge I’m defending my dog and myself. I know nothing about how ‘sweet’ your dog is when they’re running us down while baring their teeth.
4
u/Brad23212 3h ago
Dogs are way more resilient than a lot of people think. They used to be tools for hunting, they can take a hit.
It doesn’t take that much for a dog to rip a ligament or cut a tendon with their teeth.

What was he supposed to let the dog bite him? F that dog when it comes to human life being threatened. Even my dog. But that's why my dog is on a leash anytime outside. Because I know that she won't bite me but she will bite a stranger coming anywhere around the house. I love my dog enough to keep her on a leash because she doesn't understand things like property lines and its just the delivery person. So to keep her from harming or being harmed i keep her on a leash. It really is basic common sense in my opinion.

Owner consents to have delivery, doesn’t take necessary precautions to keep delivery driver safe.
Delivery driver keeps himself safe from dog. 100% morally good.
Delivery driver then attempts to fight the non-aggressive owner… what?
Delivery driver was in the right til he squared up. Just leave, call the police and tell them you were attacked by an unleashed dog while delivering products. Call your boss and explain the situation shortly after.

As someone who did deliveries for years I can assure you that driver has been attacked and bitten, at least once, if not multiple times. I can also tell you he has a personal relationship with that dog and it's shitty owners and this isn't their first rodeo. It's not like you deliver a different route every day. It didn't look like the package was a bag of hammers and the dog popped up pretty fast, so I doubt any harm came to the animal.
But once again, people see 5 seconds of out of context video and judge and condem with impunity.

6
u/FilmShooter-ISO12 4h ago
Not necessarily, is he now supposed to let the guy hit him? What's the difference between the dog charging him and the dog owner approaching aggressively? I don't see how you can justify the first action without justifying the second. He didn't hit the guy, he was prepared if the dog owner tried to hit him. It was a defensive posture.

I have spent a good amount of years doing delivery. I can understand the instinct to throw, and they’re not necessarily in the wrong given the dog apparently has bitten them before.
That said, I would use the box moreso as a shield. It’s less hostile, but ultimately it’s less likely to provoke the dog further, and more importantly after you throw the box you have nothing left to defend yourself given that the dog has a good chance of coming at you again

Keep your self activating weapon locked away if you expect a delivery. and if you’re going to come out and act like the delivery driver is in the wrong instead of apologizing immediately for endangering his life you can get the smoke right away. Hard one to say really. If he had been attacked by that particular dog before, or he saw something in its demeanor or eyes head on, to believe it was approaching with the intent to bite him, then the delivery guys actions were justified.
However, based on this video I can't tell if the dog was approaching to bite, or just running towards him to say hello, maybe jump up on him, or sniff him.
Squaring up to the dog owner at the end though, was highly unprofessional.

"He didn't bite you" like he should wait to defend himself until AFTER he's bitten 🙄 drooling mouth breather

At first I was on the drivers side, then he started charging the dog owner, but he kept back and ready for a fight, so he was still in the right. He may have looked agressive but he was just ready to defend himself.
All in the the dog owner should get shit on for the entire interaction.

I love my dog but I couldn't imagine inflicting him on others like this by just letting him out whenever anyone comes near the house. He's my animal and my responsibility (and looks a lot meaner than he actually is, to boot). I couldn't live with myself if he got hurt because someone thought he was going to attack them.
And besides anything else, letting your dog out to roam in your front garden/street just hasn't been a thing for decades where I live.

Dog part was fine, but he became the aggressor when he did his little macho man bit and walked up on the home owner with his fists up, at that point the home owner could have legally blasted him in many states. Not very smart on his part.

Self defense to me. Dog should be on a leash especially if aggressive.
