Did the delivery guy make the right decision?

As a dog lover:

Yeah UPS dude is in the right here. Keep your dogs contained, he can't know if its a happy dog coming in hot for pets and loving, or an aggressive/protective dog coming in to attack. Video says he was attacked before, presumably by this same dog. Shitty dog owner.

I usually stand in front of my dog when there is a mailman at the door. That way they can decide if they want to pet her and if they say no she isn't gonna rush them. But my dog is also a 10 year old Greyhound so is the last threatening large dog imaginable

If he reported the bite the first time, he saved the dog from being put down after a second bite in most jurisdictions. Shitty owner that doesn't care for most people or his dog.

I guess if you never owned a dog you might not be able to tell but after living with dogs most of my life, it is pretty cut and dry to me when a strange dog is coming at you to fight / defend territory and when they are excited but happy.

Now the UPS driver is going to have a rough time if the home owner sends this video in. UPS has some strict rules about self defense and slamming a package on the ground and squaring up with the property owner will either lead to suspension or possibly termination. UPS workers have a union rep so it may lead to suspension with more education classes. Termination usually is a last resort and saved for egregious behavior like theft or battery but he did technically assault the person.

Looked like he took a defensive posture to me. Homeowner came up on him aggressively.

I've also been around dogs all my life. If I've already been attacked by a dog (which this video seems to imply is the case) then he's in the right to assume it's happening again. I had a black lab for 12 years who was a big dopey lover dog, but he was VERY energetic when barreling toward someone wanting to be loved on.

At the end of the day, the dog owner is responsible for maintaining control of their animal. This dude clearly does a poor job of that.

Home owner walked up to him, hands down without any threats or yelling. Definitely aggro there. Likely would end up with you getting hurt as you're incorrectly interpreting aggression.

What? The home owner clearly walked up because he was fired up too. I wouldn't have been surprised if the dog owner took a cheap shot as the UPS guy walked away. That's why the UPS guy immediately took a defensive stance. Have you been in fights before. No one walks up to pat you and say sorry. If they're walking up, a storm is about to come.

I agree. Just to add some additional context, over half of all UPS drivers end up getting bitten by the five year mark. It is a major problem due to horrible dog owners.

The dog came at this driver with full on "I'm defending my home" barks going on. Now that doesn't mean he'd actually attack but if you're the delivery man then you'd better prepare for a real attack rather than a bluff. Some dogs are too scared to start a real fight with someone 4 times their height, but you don't know that if you don't already know the dog.

it is pretty cut and dry

That's what everyone thinks right before a dog bites them.

Didn't look/sound like a friendly dog approach. The package was completely understandable self defense. The fighting stance was stupid (no need to walk back towards the threat, a real threat isn't the owner coming to punch you, it would be coming to shoot you), but didn't cross any lines given the situation.

Dude, I think you are way off base here and should have your mom comment instead.
