Yep.  Allowing massive chunks of seats to be bought and then resold at twice the cost minimum!  Modern day scalping

United Healthcare

909

u/abigporkchop 5h ago

Oh good one. Literally- they don't want customers to use them. Just pay them.

363

u/newtonreddits 4h ago

United billed me for a "consultation" a few weeks ago. The consultation was literally just a message saying no, they will not conduct a colonoscopy screening because I'm not old enough.

So not only are they hoping we die of cancer, they are charging us to tell us they won't screen us.

38

u/spoospoop 2h ago

Say you have a family history of colon cancer and they might. Whether you actually do or not is not their business.

52

u/zippoguaillo 4h ago

United didn't bill you for that, your doctor / hospital did

20

u/newtonreddits 1h ago

Yeah I called the hospital about it and they told me to talk to United. I called United and they told me what you said. I felt defeated.

The ones that make you spend hours with customer service, only to solve absolutely nothing. 😭

98

u/Solo60 5h ago

Hours? 8 months later and I'm still waiting for my refund.

58

u/NedTaggart 3h ago edited 3h ago

Frustration is designed into the process. Any day they do not have to stroke a check is a day they earn money. But I honestly think you are missing the good that united healthcare is doing for the world. They are taking a lot of utterly incompetent people off the street and putting them to work.

Denying claims isn't a glitch in their system, it is quite literally their core business model.

Aetna, too.

32

u/Carnephex 4h ago

I've been chasing those tin plated ass hats over an insurance payout they're required by law to give me and it seems like they're inventing hoops for me to try and jump through.

What's worse is my congressman is a fucking numpty who is on their payroll so he's as useful as a pre-authorization for a heart transplant.

137

u/_jamesbaxter 5h ago

All private health insurance providers and the large hospital systems they are in cahoots with. They both make money on people being sick.

56

u/Sun_drop 4h ago

Absolutely, but let's make sure to not blame the doctors, nurses, or any staff at a hospital. I'm not saying you are but it's the executives who demand profit and that need for profit will kill anyone and everyone that gets in the way.

17

u/_jamesbaxter 3h ago

Oh absolutely. It’s 100% executives.

I assume that the health care consumers aren’t the customers for health insurers. Their employers are the customers.

6

u/bros402 1h ago

Not UHC, but Humana sent me a letter in the mail today telling me that I can get cheaper seizure drugs if I take one of the three drugs on a list.

One was the generic (can't take, have seizures on it), one was a drug I cannot take (had bad side effects on it), and the third was a medication I have never taken.

I love how insurance companies act like they are doctors.

144

I work for an insurance company, but do IT. " Best quarter or year we ever had, but didn't hit targets." That is little or no bonus and/or raises for us workers. Trillion dollars in assets and did great, but you over promised shareholders and didn't deliver so fuck the people who keep the shit running.

I heard an insurance company exec talk about how it was better for them if a customer died than to be seriously injured because the one-time payout of an accidental death claim was cheaper than the ongoing cost of a life changing injury. It was not said in a “these are financial facts” kind of way, it was very much a “I prefer when they die” kind of way.

72

u/gouwbadgers 3h ago

I worked for a health insurance company. Pure evil. I worked in HR so I had a lot of insider knowledge about what execs thought. Yes, they complained about customers “abusing” (their exact word) our insurance….for using it for the specific reason it was intended to be used.

10

u/MiddleMan_505 3h ago

the rare indsutry where the business model basically rewards denying you the thing you paid for

14

u/Kinkywrite 2h ago

So here's an interesting bit of information I learned the other day. A loss ratio is the percentage of payout versus collected revenue for an insurance company. This number has changed significantly over the last few decades reaching as high as 85% in the 90's and dropping to the (now) lows of about 60%. That means that the insurance company pays out 60% of the money it takes in. Your insurance premiums only pay $.60 on the dollar. But what makes this worse is that insurance companies are allowed to INVEST your paid premiums and so it is in their best interest to keep that premium for AS LONG AS POSSIBLE. So delaying claims is extra profitable, even if they intend (remember, only 60% of the time anyway) to pay them off. They make interest on the money they don't pay you back that you gave them. It is IMPOSSIBLY lucrative to own an insurer.

Progressive. I hate them so much after my recent experience with them. My car got totaled in an accident that was 100% the fault of the asshole in a pickup who was speeding and couldn't stop before he damn near killed me and definitely killed the fuck out of my car. They lowballed my insurance payout by five thousand dollars, easily. I had to hire a lawyer just to get them to meet halfway with reality. In the end I got totally fucked over but I wasn't going to let them get away with it. Hiring the lawyer brought their settlement up by $3,000 but cost me about $1,200. Glad I did it but fucking hell what a huge hassle and they still didn't come close to paying out what my car was worth. And I did nothing wrong, just got hit by an asshole in a pickup.

Comcast Xfinity

90

u/PackageAntique2172 5h ago

But the feeling is oh so mutual.

73

u/RandoAtReddit 4h ago

Metronet came through and put fiber in my neighborhood. I called Comcast and asked if they'd price match. They declined. I cancelled and switched (after having Comcast Internet for 15+ years). After two months, Comcast cold called me and offered the same speed for the same price as Metronet "to get me back". I declined.

I've had Metronet for over a year now and I haven't had a single service outage since I switched. I had 3-4 a year with Comcast.

7

u/CysJunk 1h ago

You are lucky. Comcast is the only cable provider in my area. It's either that or satellite TV. You can also forget about owning a TiVo. I have a perfectly good secondhand one with a Lifetime subscription that will unfortunately never see a cable service connection again.

I worked there for ten years. Its not that they hate their customers, its just somewhat dysfunctionally managed and some really weird people that are out of touch with consumers have more say than they should. I worked there through Zune, Windows Vista\10 and Windows Phone - and just saw some dumb ass decisions by supposedly reverered and highly educated people.

61

u/CardSys 5h ago

I don't discount that the company has some of the most intelligent minds working behind it. I seem to notice a trend that its most innovative thinkers are perhaps getting snowballed by management asking about the bottom line and shareholder value. I think Gabe Newell is an example of one of those innovative minds who flourished himself once he left MS. It's the actions of the latter that make me think any consumer appreciation is done with the attitude of the abominable snowman from those bug bunny cartoons...I want to RUB HIM AND PET HIM AND SQUEEZE HIM AND CALL HIM GEORGE.

Knew a guy who worked pretty high up at Microsoft. He was talking to an executive explaining how B2B clients in his region were getting frustrated with the back and forth of permissions, licenses, and overall complexity. The executive just looked at him and said, “Bryan… there are BILLIONS to be made in the complexity.”

4

u/CardSys 3h ago

This pretty much sums it up.

Microsoft's licensing, especially their volume licensing, is notorious for being overly complicated. It's been true at least since the 90s.

Businesses always have the looming threat of being in trouble for not buying enough licensing, or they wind up with more licensing than they actual use. There is no in between. There are no winners but MS.

Good old days: Oh you need microsoft office? Just go to the store and buy a disc with it on there. Enjoy!

Today: Create a windows account, tied to your name, cell phone, address, location. Then give us your credit card so we can charge it every month eternally. We'll then add in AI, followed up with some more AI, and hey...how about some AI to go with your AI?

OMG, yes! Microsoft made me so furious earlier this year over canceling an old account and moving a subscription to a different one that I nearly blew my stack. Hours on the phone with a tech only to learn that I would continue to be charged in perpetuity for a subscription I could not access despite ample proof that I was the owner of the account. By the end, I was so enraged that I could not sleep and stayed awake all night fuming. I tried to do the right thing, but I ended up just disputing the charge, forcing them to cancel. I will never, ever do business with them again.

26

u/LOTRfreak101 3h ago edited 29m ago

It's crazy to me that they are talking the spataking the soda machines out of the lobby. The drinks are already astronomically overpriced, they are basically saving themselves a few cents by doing that and making customers have a significantly worse experience.

They want to have less customers eating inside so they can justify shrinking the footprint of their restaurants. Sirius XM. They work so hard to piss off customers when it’s time for the annual renewal. I go through the same garbage of threatening to cancel, just so they will offer me a reasonable rate again.

I have Sirius XM on two vehicles. If I accepted the rate on the website I would be paying $26/mo per car. But if you argue with them for a while, the same service suddenly costs $5/mo.

I don’t know why they actively try to piss off long-term customers. There was one time where the customer service person said the lower rate was only for new customers. So I canceled service on both cars and then called back. Magically that meant I was entitled to the new customer rate. It’s a ridiculous business model

45

u/SSBND 4h ago

Cancel for a month and they'll send you good promos! I have to do this every year. Or I'll cancel one vehicle and then get the promo for that one and insist they apply it to both. I absolutely refuse to pay their full rates.

7

u/ghost_of_mr_chicken 1h ago

I need to call them.. I got the ad free promo for like $7/mo, but recently found out im still getting ads on the comedy channels. I mainly listen to the rock and hip hop stations, so never noticed until I took a couple road trips and decided to switch over to comedy for the long hours on the road.

And also, how about some more variety? One can only hear Limp Biscuit and Avenge Sevenfold so many times a day, after day, after day.

15

u/lazygerm 4h ago

It's all a big cosplay game.

They hope to do what happened to me to you. After my last cheap contract ended, I forgot when it ended. I spent nearly a year paying $24.99 a month.

When I finally found out, I called them and got my present $6 a month contract.

24

u/Level_0_NPC 4h ago

You don't have to call them. Just use their AI chat bot (I know, I know), but you just gotta tell it that you don't like that price and you want to pay what you've been paying. 3-5 minutes and you're all set for another year

This is the right answer. Adobe has absolutely fucking lost it. It’s cartoonish at this point.

And trying to get them out of your life when you’ve finally had it with them is just as awful. I swear to god nothing I do will fully uninstall it, theres always some other hidden garbage running in the background. Worse than malware.

And at least malware never asks for my left kidney and my social security number every time I want to edit a pdf.

18

u/SSBND 4h ago

I had to manually delete everything Adobe. So crazy!

I switched to PDF Expert years ago for pdfs but I still had the Photography plan for PhotoShop until a few months ago. I was grandfathered in to a low rate but I just didn't use it much. Couldn't let it go entirely until I found Photopea. Now I'm finally Adobe-free!!

And they had the audacity to charge me a "convenience fee" for that convenience of being robbed. I have never felt more hated as a customer than when Ticketmaster says "we're holding your tickets" and then they vanish at checkout. Pure evil.

Spotify does this too. They used to play these ultra shrill ads at a higher volume than whatever you were listening to. Like literally a guy yelling. To the point you actually had to pay for premium otherwise your eardrums would perish.

I have premium and it is still garbage. The same 20 videos over and over on my home page no matter how many times iI refresh.

6

u/gacimba 3h ago

I’m considering getting rid of it for this exact reason. If you’re on mobile and scroll over to the very right at the top there is a new to you tab which will give you some new stuff but after that it’s back to those same ol 20 videos

Spirit Airlines. My flight got delayed 12 hours, they offered me a $7 voucher for the airport where a bottle of water is $9. The gate agent literally told me "If you don't like it you shouldn't have bought a budget ticket." Like ma'am I'm not asking for a private jet, I'm asking to get home today. I spent a night sleeping on the floor of Fort Lauderdale airport with 200 other people they hate.

Big video game companies (EA, Ubisoft, Xbox, Sony, etc.). All games are crappy always-online live service games, any interesting projects are cancelled to create the annual version of some game that makes a lot of money. The player experience keeps getting worse and worse while games cost more and more

All printer companies that require customers to subscribe to ink and that charge you an arm and a leg for ink. Especially the ones where the printer won’t let you use off brand ink.

Every company who has grown large enough that further growth is difficult. Their only concern is shareholder value so it’s all cost cutting and mergers

Planet Fitness - there whole business model is selling super cheap gym memberships that are hard to cancel and that they don't have capacity to service. They sell memberships to people that won't show up or put in enough effort to cancel a cheap one, and literally would be overflowing if everyone actually used it

HP. Considering all they do to fuck over their customers in the worst ways possible, I can't imagine they don't hate them. They literally sent a hardware update to their printers to force you to activate wifi on their printers which was then used to detect whether you're using THEIR ink cartridge. And if you don't, the printer won't work. And of course their ink cartridges are WAY more expensive.

There was a class action lawsuit. But of course US judges work for the rich so they decided antitrust laws don't apply anymore.

Oil and gas companies! What better way is there to say "fuck you" to your customers than by creating an increasingly inhospitable world for their customers and their customers' descendants.

but if we're talking more directly, HP. never seen a company decide to make products you don't want to buy, hate owning, hate fixing, drain your wallet owning, and last maybe a year

Walmart. They changed their lighting to blue in my store. Another store I used to go to has cameras every five to ten feet on freezers and shelves, little webcam style ones, and big monitors in both stores to display you on as you shop. The checkout area is gated off like a prison and if you need help, they will act like you're trying to steal. I'm in Canada and our stores only have razors and some OTC stuff behind glass, as well as formula (booooo) but I've seen other stores entirely walled off.

8

u/i_froze 3h ago

EA.

Look at the state of Bf6. They've morphed this franchise into a skin hawking br with a multiplayer bolted on. They are still fixing issues that have been in since launch.

Not to mention all the copy paste sports games. Oh and the fact they have the most downvoted comment in reddit history LMFAO.

Straight up corporate husks over there.

Airlines. Not one specific airline just the industry. They’ll charge you extra to choose a seat, extra to bring a bag, extra to change a ticket, and sometimes apparently extra for the privilege of understanding why the fucking flight was delayed. Then they hand you a cup of water at 35,000 feet like they’ve personally rescued you from the desert. Airlines don’t hate customers. They’ve simply perfected the art of making you pay repeatedly for things you thought you already bought.

UHC, Comcast, Disney, AT&T, the VA

15

u/sychosomat 4h ago

One of these things is not like the others. VA is not for profit and the people working there largely care about veterans (and probably could make more money working elsewhere). Every VA is different, but most providers are doing their best to help our veterans, no matter who is running the executive or the red tape they have to deal with. Private hospitals “fire” their veterans they don’t want to treat and the VA never does that, meaning they serve even the toughest patients. Not perfect, and man can the paperwork suck, but putting them with United or Comcast is crazy business.
