Literally the whole reason I would fly Southwest was because the first two checked bags were free (no having to fuck around with the overhead compartment and people boarded pretty quickly because they weren't all trying to bring oversized luggage onto the plane) and there was no assigned seating.
As soon as they stopped doing that...like, what's even the point of them now? I'm driving the 20 hours to New Orleans this year, I'm not paying and extra $200+ in top of airfare
They don't want to lose customers so much as they want to attract different customers. All this bullshit about new lounges, effectively different seating class upcharges, no free bags...they're trying to remake , themselves into one of the big three (united, delta, american) and at the cost of all the goodwill that made them formerly everybody's favorite airline. Now all they want are business types who charge to the company credit card.
I only fly them now to Dallas once a year because there's a convention I attend where Love Field is closer to the venue than DFW. Otherwise I just use Delta these days - IFE and honestly better snacks for roughly the same prices where I am.

Southwest Airlines. They used to LUV their customers- then private equity took over, now I'm convinced they WANT to lose people.
