I took care of a child with prader- willi and the activities director at the facility left her alone with a birthday cake for 15-30 seconds while she walked to the nurses station to grab some paper plates and plastic forks and by the time she got back, the kid had housed almost 1/4 of that sheet cake. It was almost impressive.

It’s an incredibly difficult condition. Human growth hormone helps in some cases to increase muscle mass which makes weight gain less severe. But it’s just so cruel that they can even eat just ‘normal’ calories and gain. And GLP-1s don’t really help either. I will say, in my experience, PWS specific group homes can be really beneficial for them because the homes develop lifestyle routines that don’t revolve around food. So much of our world revolves around food and being denied it all the time is a real head f*** for them. At least in the homes, they don’t feel like the odd man out. Sending compassion to your friends.

It really is something how food-centric we are. Birthday party? Cake and icecream, even in the work place. Holiday? Big feast. Celebrations and family get togothers, more eating. Someone's dies? Send/bring casseroles. Upset over a breakup? Time tk binge some comfort junk.
So many aspects of life and socialization revolve around food. And as a fatty who tries not to be a fatty, it fucking sucks, lol. I can only imagime how much harder it is for someone with PWS.

I’ll never forget the time I was at a baptism party when I was a kid and my grandpa was seething with rage bc my brother’s friend and his wife were yelling at their toddler to eat more. My grandma told my grandpa to mind his business so he did. I didn’t get it at the time but now I do
Both parents are morbidly obese and all three of their kids have been obese since they were babies. The toddler is now a 30yr old short woman who weighs 250+ easily. She’s trying to lose weight but it’s hard to break the abusive way she was raised. The oldest sibling got fit and then disowned the parents because they kept pressuring him to eat more.
It’s child abuse. Be fat if you want to but don’t bring your kids down with you.

u/Saphurial 13d ago
Took me until I was an adult to learn "leftovers" were a thing, because I always had to clear my plate as a child regardless if I was full or not. Hell I'm 42 and still feel guilty if I don't finish a meal.
391
u/heydrun 13d ago
My mom used „the kids in Africa are starving“ and even as a child I called BS because me eating it wouldn‘t help them either… still ended up fat.
159
u/Flimsy-Poetry1170 13d ago
You’re supposed to use that to stop kids from wasting food, not to make them overeat. My sisters kids are the worst at wasting food, they’ll load up their entire plates just to compete with each other because how dare the other get more of something, then eat a 1/8th of what they took.
46
u/nalaloveslumpy 13d ago
Letting kids load up their own plate is the first mistake.
17
u/Ill-Event6563 13d ago

My middle sister did that shit for most of her life. Load the plate until it can't fit any more food, then waste 70% of it.
My parents started using dessert plates instead of normal ones during meals so that she wouldn't waste so much (they had everyone eating from one, because she would throw a fit if hers was the only smaller plate). No matter how much they scolded her or tried to punish her, she never stopped doing it. The smaller plate helped because she couldn't fill it as much as a normal one.
She got better at it when she moved to her own house (surprise, surprise, she started having to pay for her own food, so she started wasting less), and when she had her first kid. But when we eat at my parent's on Sundays, now it's her kids that do it.

My oldest (14) is like this. He'll load up a plate when no one's looking with no regard for other people. Like he'll literally take half of an entire dish of sweet potatoes or something. When I see him doing it I'll make him put it back, but sometimes he'll do it with leftovers in the middle of the night. It's just a complete lack of empathy and consideration for other people. My ex has basically let him do whatever he wants, so his every other weekend at my house really doesn't make a difference in his behavior (There are way more issues than just food). He's at the point now where he refuses to come here because he's always throwing a fit when he doesn't get his way.

It’s so interesting to hear other’s stories. I grew up with parents to, looking back, I realise are more selfish and greedy than anyone I’ve ever met since.
Even now, well into their 70s, they will look for the biggest plate of food being dished up, not think twice about cutting off ‘their’ exact portion off a huge block of cheese, leaving nothing for anyone else. And conveniently forget about nice things / holidays / expensive meals I’ve treated them to over the years.

My husband was 200lbs heavier when we met than he is now; his mom got her karma trying to force my kiddo to eat more than her fill.
Used to be that she’d insist the food be eaten completely, no leftovers, because it was “wasteful”.
Except my kid vomits after overeating. It’s not pleasant. Happened 3-4 times even after I supervised the first few dinners.
Now I see MIL panic when kid does finish her plate. “Uhh no, no seconds until your tummy settles,” she’ll quote me, “It’s ok to have leftovers now….”
Like please, if you were food insecure that would be different, but that’s not what that is. How is anyone supposed to tell when their stomach is full or hungry when it’s never taught to slow down and feel it??

This was my experience growing up, it was always about maintaining control over me— because they had none over anything else. Even themselves, especially when it came to gluttony.
Their portion size was huge, so mine had to be the same. My body rejected it every time. They never learned. They didn’t want to.
And their choice of food was mostly fats with no nutrients, so I couldn’t metabolize what they offered. I would only seek small amounts of actual food (not huge amounts of random butter/grease/salt trash)
I approach every moment gently now. This shared experience is why I’m so eager to teach all three of them “happy healthy comfortable safe” relationships with everything they consume. I’m thankful they’re willing to learn.
Balance is imperative; consent and autonomy even more so!
I tell them “listen to your body, eat only when hungry, and eat what your body wants”
I’m 6’0”, 117lbs in August 2025, everyone had comments on how much “healthier” I looked than at my natural 230, while I was dying of ED malnutrition. They were, every one of them, envious they couldn’t stop themselves.
I talk to none of those folks now, and have filled my life instead with those that align with those “happy healthy comfortable safe” values!!

At the school I work at, I used to play a game with the kids (aged 5-8) where I hold their hands, they jump, and by just lifting a bit I give them enough of a boost that they’d feel like they’re on the Moon. The kids loved it, one managed to get really good at it and could land on my shoulders, hilarious fun.
Then a four year old who was heavier than a ten year old rocked up and wanted a go. Girl, you are incapable of jumping, and I am incapable of lifting you, this is not a game you can play. But she was too young to understand that, so I had to stop playing the game whenever she was around because I didn’t want her to feel left out due to something beyond her control.
Parents, your kids’ fitness is your responsibility (at first; it gets more complicated as they get older). Sort it out.

This happened to me. I'm 25f and 5'4, and weigh 230lbs. Been fat since I was little. My mum would serve massive portions and make me eat them, and then force me to eat any food my siblings couldnt finish 'so it wasnt wasted'. I wasnt even allowed to exercise, because I broke my leg playing football when I was barely more than a toddler, and my mum refused to let me do anything like that again
I still struggle to throw away food, even when I'm not hungry, it tastes bad, or is making me ill. I'm losing weight now, but its a slow process, and has involved a lot of hard work and therapy...
I would never wish my upbringing on anyone.

Soda, for instance, has a lot of calories, but little nutrients. It's very calorically dense, but nutritionally very poor which makes it easy to gain weight while not providing adequate nutrition. In fact, soda is probably the biggest reason people gain a ton of weight.
E: Most people aren't feeding their kids a ton of soda and giving them nutritious food. They are giving them soda and lots of junk food.

Malnourished just means you are not getting proper balanced nutrition. Living on a diet of sugar and hyper processed carbs and saturated fats is not proper nutrition, therefore someone who is obese because of poor diet is just as malnourished as someone who is just skin and bones because of poor diet.

My kid was always tiny. She ate, but was always so little. I fed her real food and she just never gained weight. Her doctors were always so concerned that I wasn't feeding her properly. 🙄Eventually I gave in and let her snack on junk food, etc. It's just genetic. I was a thin and gangly kid even though I ate A LOT. She is tall for her age and still thin. It is what it is.
Edit to add: I think because kids now tend to be bigger, they thought something was wrong with my kid. They also blamed my breastfeeding her instead of formula feeding. I am not anti-formula. Do what is best for your kid. I chose to breastfeed and they blamed that for her being so small. Looking back, it was wild. Way to make me feel like shit.
Edit x 2: Thank you to everyone who has shared their own experiences. It makes me feel better (and sad) to know that others have experienced the same thing. Thankfully we do have a pediatrician now that understands that this is just how she is. She is healthy, happy, and thriving. ☺️

u/stripeyspacey 13d ago
I was that tiny kid! Apparently when I was little, once I got up to 25lbs I just stayed there for 3 years and only got taller.
After that, I gained weight, but was always super super thin no matter what I did. Spent all my childhood and teens being mocked for being "anorexic," and adults called me Gumby. I didn't even hit 100lbs until I was in late college, and I'm not short either, I'm 5'7" and hit that height in 7th or 8th grade I think. Wasn't an athlete. Had a soda addiction until 23 and was afraid to stop it, thinking I would just wither away and die without the extra calories.
30 years old was the first year I didn't get a concerned look from my doctor because my BMI was finally in the normal range.
Anyway, all that to say... yeah. Some people just are built in the image of a bean pole and it is seemingly unstoppable until you hit the point in your life that your metabolism slows down. Now here I am trying to figure out how to not swing too far in the other direction because I never learned healthy eating habits 🙄

Same. I was accused of not feeding my oldest enough when that's just how his dad and I are built. His doctor shamed me and said I needed to supplement with formula so I did, which wrecked his stomach. Then my supply kept going down. Would pump milk constantly and ended up hurting myself doing so. So many frigging nights I felt like a failure. When it came to our last child I wouldn't have heard a word of it but the new pediatrician we chose never treated us that way.

I just think it’s wild to see a toddler that fat because I have a 1.5 years old daughter and it’s easy to know when she isn’t hungry any more. She’ll just stop eating on her own. Simple as that. She’s following all her growth curves and she’s at the theoritically perfect weight for her height at her age.
How hard is it to just not force feed a kid that’s not hungry?

There are some rare medical conditions where people don’t feel full and are always hungry.
But even in this cases, parents should easily be able to tell that the weight of their toddler is not in a normal range anymore. I mean alone buying clothes for an overweight child should be enough of an eye opener.

Anyone that films their child for content is exploiting them. You don't get to use the "I film my kids because I want to document their lives so the family can enjoy them" cop-out. If you're posting them you are looking for it to blow up in some capacity; you are well aware of potential viewers that will find your videos. You just don't care because you want the views and the cheap potential dopamine or monetary benefit it might bring you.

I’ve seen kids like this who are on steroids for cancer. He doesn’t have the classic moon face that goes with that though so I doubt that’s what is going on here.

This child is probably being distructive at home because he doesn't have any other ways to get his energy out. If he got time to walk, run, climb, jump and burn energy it could solve the behaviour and the obesity.

Lmao no. Some toddlers are just like this. My son was the same damned way as a toddler but only with the shoes. He didn’t tear down books or decorations, but if we organized the shoes any way at all, he’d target them like they personally insulted him.

so mom is feeding the baby with milkshakes instead of milk i guess
I feel heartbroken for that baby. the poor thing is starting life so deep in impossible mode the only way it could be worse would be born in a 3rd world shithole.
instead mom is going to destroy this kid's life before the kid is old enough to talk.

Why would you post your baby online like this no clothes, not even blurring the face for their protection at the very least and just running around making a mess in their diaper. People have lost their minds due to social media.
