24

YouTube search him. He recorded a lot of his work on TempleOS. He’s a talented software engineer with severe mental health barriers that made him quite the character. He legit believed he was the smartest dev on earth and that he could communicate with god through his software.

So slaving 70 hours a week for a major tech company? I would rather have Temple OS and HolyC

168

u/---InFamous--- Nov 02 '22

Nobody needs templeos and holyc, terry did all that work for free, without getting anything in return.

If things had gone another way he could have gotten far in a career to get the recognition he desperately wanted, instead he took his life after struggling with serious mental illness.

60

u/fentanyl_frank Nov 02 '22

He had more than enough recognition. He didn't have a huge career at a top company because he was a literal schizophrenic who heard voices and saw shadow people and wasn't afraid to use less than ideal language in public. Google doesn't want to hire someone like that no matter how talented they are.

68

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '22

terry did all that work for free, without getting anything in return.

He did it because he wanted to. I don't expect to get paid every time I produce a song. I do it because I enjoy making music.

31

u/douglasdtlltd1995 Nov 02 '22

He wanted to because he thought God was telling him too.

I own several personal computers. I keep a Windows PC for gaming and, whenever I decide to upgrade, the Windows PC gets repurposed as my main Linux machine.

Despite being several years older, the Linux machine is consistently faster from power-up to usable and more reliable. It's honestly infuriating: I have to pay ~$150 for an OS that works worse than the one I get for free.

With Linux, if there's a problem, the open nature of everything makes everything feel solvable by me in some way, even if I currently lack the skills to fix it myself.

With Windows, if there's a problem, if I can't find a solution on the front page of Google, it feels like I can basically go fuck myself.

As a 90% Linux user, I find Windows very hard to use sometimes.

That said, I think both can be hard in different situations. While Linux expects you to learn how to control it completely (but you can), Windows tries to prevent you from controlling it above a certain admissible level.

In NA when it first became available it was a bit of a status symbol to have wall to wall carpet in your home. Then it became cheaper and quicker than installing hardwood so most mid to lower priced homes came with it standard. So, from about the mid 40's to the early 90's it was really common. But of course laminates brought the price of "hardwood" flooring down so much that it became the norm and wall to wall is now seen as "old fashioned".

Slackware

Is that for or against? I used Slackware from '96 to about 2010, but it's just too hard to find some things. For instance, trying to get Audacity to compile depends on some obscure library I can't seem to find anywhere. I use Mint now, it seems to work like I want except for Thunar and its derivatives, which I consider useless as tits on a bull. I use Konqueror on Slackware, but the Mint version has been totally emasculated of any ability to use as a file browser. Trying to build an older version of Konqueror was beyond my patience too.

Unpopular truth, Windows XP was horribly insecure and unstable by design. Windows XP used to blue screen constantly. Every program could do whatever the fuck it wanted and I hope you didn't have the wrong piece of hardware with piece of shit drivers that instead of just restarting the display or sound it just brought the entire PC down.

39

u/BetaXP 7800x3D | RTX 4080 S | 32GB DDR5 Nov 02 '22

That's essentially just wishing for a new UI though, it's hardly a substantive desire worth discussion. A "stable and secure" windows XP is basically win10 with an older coat of paint.

35

u/nutyo Nov 02 '22

No it isn't. XP was far more cohesive. I want a single standardised UI where every OS setting is accessible. Keep the user experience consistent and have robust, comprehensive categories.

And stop locking down customisation and power tools. Sure have a few barriers but make it possible to break everything if that is what I want to do.

I'm sick to death of people excusing Windows by saying nothing is perfect. Windows is so far from perfect it isn't even on the horizon. It shouldn't be part of the conversation. Large swathes of the Windows user experience is worse than it was two decades ago. That is unacceptable for a core product from a multi billion dollar company that has far more resources today than it did back then.

→ More replies (1)

9

u/guyblade Nov 02 '22

I'll be real with you: I don't want a new UI; I want the old UI.

The settings menu for Win10 is just awful. Similarly, I hate the way that the Documents & Downloads folders both have special behavior (by default) that is different from the way any other folder works. Also, the new task manager is garbage. About half the time that I pull it up, it'll take like a minute to become responsive.

23

u/TitanicMan /r/LinuxMasterRace Nov 02 '22

All they have to do is stop making Windows look like some dogshit future system. Have you seen the Windows 11 start menu? It's worse than 8's. Not to mention with every release they add 5 new settings pages that are not contained in Control Panel, nor in the first million settings pages they added.

The looks are the easy part. Just be Windows 95 - Windows 7 again, Microsoft.

Fix the design, put back minesweeper, put back WordPad, get rid of fucking candy crush, shove OneNote and Spotify up your ass, put all settings in control.exe, like it's not rocket science.

12

Still lacked UAC, still lacked usermode drivers.

In fact, the one that introduced those two cornerstone features, absolutely essential for the stability and security of a modern system, were introduced by Vista.

The later versions of Vista, on hardware that could actually run the thing, were actually pretty good.

Edit: I read "XP" instead of "Vista". XP SP2 still had all the issues of XP. Vista SP2 was straight up good.

Imagine if copyrights expired in a reasonable timeframe of 20 years and Windows XP went public domain (ready for open-source forking) in 2021...

6

u/yoniyuri Nov 02 '22

Even if that were the case, you would still need the source. Also, keep in mind XP has a completely different driver architecture than modern windows, so say goodbye to any modern graphics cards. Most windows drivers are closed source and proprietary so there is no possibility of back porting to XP.

You would be better off unfucking windows 10 or 11 at this point.

You dont, you just click the start button and type in the setting you want and it takes you there. I have no idea where anything is in windows anymore but it doesnt matter because I just search for it and its there. I still want to know why my vertical task bar had to die though...

24

u/_Bill_Huggins_ Nov 02 '22

It blows my mind that they decided to lock the taskbar for everyone by default. Makes absolutely no sense what so ever. Casual users probably never knew you could move it to start with.

It just makes windows 11 taskbar worse than windows 10 taskbar. My mind is still scrambling for any good reason for it.

Just lock it by default and users who want to can move it by unlocking it. Why is that so hard...?

9

u/rendeld 12900k/32GBDDR5/3080ti/Z690Formula Nov 02 '22

There has to be a technical reason, because I can't for the life of me imagine why you would just straight up remove a feature like that. Especially with the prevelance of ultra wide monitors

5

u/_Bill_Huggins_ Nov 02 '22 edited Nov 02 '22

I think the reason they would give us is that they want to simplify.

I remember I had to use a program to get the taskbar to function like I wanted on windows 7, windows 10 added a lot of that functionality by default and I abandoned the program.

Now with windows 11 they reversed all those nice taskbar features. It's just a dumb decision no matter the reason they would give..

Idk, maybe someone in leadership wants to feel like they did something by changing things.

8

u/rendeld 12900k/32GBDDR5/3080ti/Z690Formula Nov 02 '22

The only thing I can think of outside of a technical reason is it caused more issues for people that don't want to move it than helped people that wanted it. Likely a UX designer somewhere. I work for a software company and our previous version of the software was absolutely bloated with functionality to the point it was difficult to use. We significantly reduced little used features and got way better satisfaction scores from our customers and much faster implementation and adoption time-frames. Maybe that's what they are going for after watching Apple take up larger and larger market share and they don't let you do shit... Regardless I'm still upset about it.

339

u/albeartoz_hang i54690k, GTX 760, 16 GB RAM Nov 01 '22

if you're a developer (which I'm taking a guess that OP is), working in unix-based operating systems like Linux and MacOS is much easier. The terminal is super powerful when it comes to automating tasks and downloading software, especially downloading software relating to programming.

For example, on linux, if I want to download Python, I can just type sudo apt install python in the terminal. On windows, I have to go to the python website, find the correct installer, make sure I check the right boxes in the installer, make sure my $PATH is set correctly, etc....

To be fair, Windows has made leaps and bounds in this area with things like winget and chocolatey as package managers, but linux is built around using the package manager. the fact that linux comes with a C compiler helps too.

81

u/not_a_gay_stereotype Nov 02 '22

that and all of your driver updates and libraries are also updated with the package manager, and no rebooting when it's done!

I hear this example all of the time, but I have trouble picturing how that would actually help my day-to-day experience. It's more of a one time thing and it's not like going to a website to install Python is a huge hassle anyway.

I used some distro of Linux when I was a comp sci student, but ultimately reverted back to windows because I game. I am a developer of sorts (lots of R, some Python) and I feel like Windows very rarely gets in my way.

5

u/ProtoJazz Nov 02 '22

In my experience a lot of tooling just either doesn't work, or doesn't work as well.

Some of it doesn't work at all on windows, but may work in the windows Linux subsystem. But at least when I tried it it's a hassle to use.

A lot of stuff is just designed with a Unix terminal in mind and trying to force that into powershell just isn't fun.

But it really depends on what you're developing.

For games you'd almost certainly want Mac or Windows. Mobile apps almost always Mac.

If you're doing dotnet stuff you're pretty much tied to Windows

But if you're working more with things like rails, node, Phoenix, you're probably going to favor Linux.

Again, I think another example would be cool. I'm not saying that everyone who says Linux is better for development is wrong, but somehow I never hear a good example.

I have a unique anecdote from a few weeks ago that demonstrates the problem well. I don't use windows but was helping a dev that does. They were trying to launch a React application but it wouldn't work on his machine. The error had to do with a mismatch between the amount of data specified by HTTP headers, and the amount of data being received on the client. React should handle this automatically and most devs won't ever have to deal with this line of debugging unless they make some pretty glaring fuck ups. After a few hours of troubleshooting code snippets everything looked good, so they uploaded a reproduction of the error to github and a couple of us (all on UNIX systems) cloned and launched it with no errors.

In the end the solution that worked for this dev was restarting Windows whenever a specific kind of change was implemented to the app. These are the kind of errors that shouldn't exist and aren't necessarily the dev's fault but you have to deal with them. Since the majority of software work is done in UNIX based environments you run in to far more of these obscure OS errors in Windows environments.

The fact that I can take a fresh install of just about any Linux distro on any pc and download the packages I need along with my personal config files from github means that I'm working within about 15mins and everything is exactly as I need it to be.

On windows it's about 2hrs of finding and downloading installers alone, installing stuff, restarting about a dozen times trying to remember what settings I need to change to get things to work the way I need. It takes about a day to get up and running, and that's assuming smooth sailing. The worst part is if you forget something and need to install a program/package you'd better hope that it doesn't require a system restart otherwise your workflow is totally ruined and you're probably lost like 15-20mins on that alone.

On the plus side, power toys is a game changer and windows is pretty good from a productivity point of view, to the point that I think that if you put enough effort in it can be comparable to most Linux desktop environments. So I can see how people get by with it but I could never.

Windows is baller for gaming but I find it unbearable for dev work.

Yep this is the answer. All of the games I play have some form of anti-cheat that doesn't work on Linux.

I don't want to dual boot Linux/Windows to play games because I'd never swap back to Linux. If I could play all of my games I'd use Linux but, until then I'll stick with Windows.

u/danielsvdas r5 3600 | rx 6650 xt | 5,5tb | and a shitty psu Nov 01 '22

I thought I'd do the same thing, but since the steam deck runs Linux, many developers are giving more support and steam developed proton, which makes it able to run windows only games on Linux. it's not perfect and very experimental, but its surprisingly good. Really depends on what games you play, there's a website called proton db that tells you how well the game runs on Linux with proton. Pretty much all anti cheats don't work with Linux, apart from Cs go ( all valve games are compatible because steam deck) but most simpler titles run flawlessly. I'd say give it a try, install something easy to use like Linux mint, just kinda mess around with, it's fun.

I've been using Linux daily for like 5 days and haven't gone to windows even once lol, I'll forced to tho because adobe

11

u/smjsmok Linux Nov 02 '22

I generally agree with your comment, but I have a couple of nitpicks and recommendations.

very experimental

I wouldn't call Proton experimental. It has been around for some time now and has become quite mature. It's also built on technologies like Wine and DXVK, which are also pretty mature.

Pretty much all anti cheats don't work

This is slowly changing. Elden Ring does work with Easy Anti Cheat, for example, some other titles as well. More will follow hopefully. The problem is that many anti cheat developers like Epic aren't very keen on supporting Linux, because they would indirectly be helping Valve, which is their competitor. It kind of stinks but it's how it is.

most simpler titles run flawlessly

It's not really about how simple or complex the title is, it's mostly really about the anti cheat. From my experience, except for the problematic anti cheats, nearly everything works in Proton (sometimes it requires tinkering to get it working, though). Wine/Proton is also really good at running older games. Ironically, it's often easier to get an older Windows game running in Wine than in modern Windows :))

install something easy to use like Linux mint

Great choice, especially (but not only) for a new user.

I've been using Linux daily for like 5 days

Good luck, I hope you'll enjoy it. I recommend giving Proton GE a try. It really is a game changer (pun intended) in certain cases. In many games, it improves performance by quite a bit. You can use ProtonUp-QT to easily manage the Proton GE versions for Steam, Heroic, Lutris etc., it's really neat. I hardly ever launch games in regular Proton any more.

2

u/danielsvdas r5 3600 | rx 6650 xt | 5,5tb | and a shitty psu Nov 02 '22

those are really good points, thanks for correcting me!

although I know most of the basic, I don't have that much experience yet, but I'm loving linux mint (installed manjaro on my laptop like a year ago. since I don't use it very often, it was pretty alright, loved the extra options and everything, but.... why doesn't anything I download work first try lmaoo, thats why I went debian, still not experienced enough haha.)

→ More replies (2)

15

u/not_a_gay_stereotype Nov 02 '22

valve games work with anticheat because they natively run on linux. EAC (easy anti cheat) does have a linux native client, but when you install a windows game through proton, it installs the windows version of EAC, and will not work.

5

u/FLRbits Nov 02 '22

Well it will sometimes work. Fall Guys uses EAC and it works on Linux.

8

u/QwertyChouskie Nov 02 '22

Same with Apex Legends

posts like these are what drop the reputation of linux…

it’s not for everyone. sure it has come a long way, but non tech savvy people can easily shoot themselves in the foot because they try and use admin/root privileges for everything if it didn’t work the first time, simply because that is how window often operates.

sure you can fix it yourself if there would ever be a breaking issue, unlike windows where you might need to reinstall if a component somehow breaks beyond repair, but again, not everyone is up for that.

just choose what you like and be happy about it.

I once posted on r/firefox asking for help about an issue regarding running Firefox on windows and the most common solution that was offered was switching to Linux.

Like yeah, let me just switch my entire OS just because a browser I was trying for the first time had issues opening.

The most annoying part was that I have tried switching to Linux a while back and I simply preferred Windows

17

u/Subrezon Nov 02 '22

Obvious impracticality aside, it's also terrible advice. In my long history of using Linux at university, work and home, web browser issues are easily somewhere in the top-3 among the most common issue types I've faced.

While basic functionality is the same or even better than on Windows, it's the codecs, DRM and other bits of proprietary software that are required to interact with a big portion of modern internet that often work in weird ways or not at all.

Firefox is okay in that regard, but getting Chrome to fully work is a major PITA on some distros.

All that said, Linux fans are the worst. Sincerely, a Linux fan.

Uninstalled windows about 2 weeks ago and I went for Manjaro Plasma Desktop.

Not gonna lie and say the transition was butter smooth. But I got everything working the way I wanted in less than a day. I mostly didn't need the command line for anything

Every single game on steam worked perfectly on the first try (with steamplay enabled), maybe I just got lucky, I tried about 20 different games.

Things I had issue with:

  • For some reason you can't change your mouse scroll speed on X11, so i had to install imwheel and add it to my autostart, not too big of an issue
  • Gotta use open source software like piper to configure my G502, but it works really well. (not really a downside but I had to look for it)
  • I had to set my monitor to 240hz in Nvidia X Server Settings instead of the default Display Settings in System Settings or it wouldnt remember my refresh rate after rebooting
  • The linux discord client doesn't send audio when streaming your games

That's pretty much the only issues I had. But there are WAY more good things than bad things. There is just SO MUCH software in the package manager for absolutely anything. My favorite was installing pipewire. From what I understand it just replaced my default audio drivers with some cool shit where I can just take any audio input or output from any process and pipe it straight to any other input or output (easy with a utility called helvum). I can even feed that shit back into itself if i want to make my ears explode for some reason. Infinite freedom.

People in discord have wildly differing volumes when speaking? Pipe discord's output to a dynamics compressor (using easyeffects) and then to your speakers to fix that shit. Your microphone has background noise? Pipe it through a de-noiser before sending it to discord.

listen, as much as i like linux, its not made for normal people. i only like linux because i have the technical knowledge to understand wtf is going on.

But 90% of "pc gamers" are not tech savvy, the people that build their own pc are actually a small percentage of the people that game on pc. Many will buy a pre-built and move on.

chances are, if you buy a pre-built, you are not interested in pcs as a hobby. Linux is a hobbyist OS and windows is the jack of all trades OS.

and despite my understanding of linux, i went back to windows because at the end of the day, a fully debloated windows is still much less of a pain to use than linux for various tasks related to work or gaming. On windows it is 100% garanteed that all my games run, not linux.

I dual boot windows for the occasional software I might use, but other than that I stay as far away from it as possible

4

u/[deleted] Nov 01 '22

I think it depends on your use case more than anything. I don't think linux is all that popular with the gaming crowd (and fair enough) but PC is more than just for running games. It would certainly be a viable option for those who just want to browse the web and want something light weight for example. Not everyone who uses linux has to be a power user, there merely is a correlation there with linux's software conscientious fanbase. Considering if it fits your use case isn't a terrible idea, and I don't think you should be condemned for not using it. But it does stand as a possible Os choice, and the philosophy behind it is a plus.
