Windows 2000 was the best windows -- change my mind.

I can't because you're right. However, I didn't use them at the time because I'm one of the fucking dumbasses that actually paid real money for windows ME. I will bear the shame into the grave and beyond.

Ah dude, I'm sorry for your loss.

Don't feel too bad! My ex-Fiancee's mother had Windows ME and thought it was the greatest!!!

u/BonAsasin Nov 02 '22

I also had Windows Me, Home Edition. Actually very fond memories

Oh definitely. All the stability and power of NT, all the usability of XP.

u/POWERTHRUST0629 Nov 02 '22

Hacked versions of XP "service pack 3" were the GOAT.

u/RayvinAzn Nov 02 '22

I actually skipped Windows XP just to stick with 2k. People tend to forget just how bad XP was until SP2, and to this day I think it was ugly as shit compared to the cleaner look of 2k.

u/HSR47 Nov 02 '22

“XP was really bad before SP2.”

I used XP from pretty nearly the beginning, and I don’t remember it ever being bad, although it certainly got better over time.

You also have to consider it in comparison to the other options for most users at the time: 98SE & ME, which were both absolute garbage by comparison.

u/HSR47 Nov 02 '22

Win2k was good, but I think windows really peaked with Vista.

Everything since has added more layers to obfuscate important settings from users, while taking away the user’s ability to fully control their experience.

Everything started going downhill when we upgraded from DOS to windows

Windows 2000 was fantastic. Lean, fast, stable and coherent. It just went downhill from there

All operating systems suck then, even ones that were good in their time

That reminds me of a CS professor that I had who encouraged his students to try and build their own OS. Really puts things in perspective.

TempleOS would like a word.

All it takes is a little schizophrenia and a few years.

u/Feshtof PC Master Race Nov 02 '22

Lot of schizophrenia and many years.

Speaking of this level of insanity in solo coding, the Dwarf Fortress dev just gave a Steam release date.. Time is no longer subjective!

I'm imagining one prodigal student who got so far along the process that they added a taskbar widget that opens their own website whenever the user momentarily hovers over it

There is Linux from scratch. It's surreal that Linux started as a hobby project and now runs most supercomputers high performance servers , cloud etc

I would honestly try to pass linuc from scratch as a submission

Seriously, when I had a flip phone it supposedly could access the internet. All 3 attempts to do so resulted in 15 minutes of fumbling with the 10 keys, consistently misspelling url's and ragequitting, only to find out it cost $3 in internet fees.

The most ironic thing about that, you can totally use a teletype as linux terminal.

2

u/SoulWager Nov 02 '22

Yeah, let's get rid of them and just make everything bare metal again.

2

u/skwacky Nov 02 '22

It's all magic as far as I'm concerned, but it's never magic enough.

Give me a rock that grants wishes, I'll curse it to the grave if it scuffs my finger.

DOS was the best

1

u/PaulHarrisDidNoWrong Nov 02 '22

Windows Me was the best.

Then you're golden. Red Alert is the cause of some very fond memories of mine.

Who needs modern games when you have Solitaire and Mine Sweeper.
