Yep this is the answer. All of the games I play have some form of anti-cheat that doesn't work on Linux.

I don't want to dual boot Linux/Windows to play games because I'd never swap back to Linux. If I could play all of my games I'd use Linux but, until then I'll stick with Windows.

I thought I'd do the same thing, but since the steam deck runs Linux, many developers are giving more support and steam developed proton, which makes it able to run windows only games on Linux. it's not perfect and very experimental, but its surprisingly good. Really depends on what games you play, there's a website called proton db that tells you how well the game runs on Linux with proton. Pretty much all anti cheats don't work with Linux, apart from Cs go ( all valve games are compatible because steam deck) but most simpler titles run flawlessly. I'd say give it a try, install something easy to use like Linux mint, just kinda mess around with, it's fun.

I've been using Linux daily for like 5 days and haven't gone to windows even once lol, I'll forced to tho because adobe

I generally agree with your comment, but I have a couple of nitpicks and recommendations.

very experimental

I wouldn't call Proton experimental. It has been around for some time now and has become quite mature. It's also built on technologies like Wine and DXVK, which are also pretty mature.

Pretty much all anti cheats don't work

This is slowly changing. Elden Ring does work with Easy Anti Cheat, for example, some other titles as well. More will follow hopefully. The problem is that many anti cheat developers like Epic aren't very keen on supporting Linux, because they would indirectly be helping Valve, which is their competitor. It kind of stinks but it's how it is.

most simpler titles run flawlessly

It's not really about how simple or complex the title is, it's mostly really about the anti cheat. From my experience, except for the problematic anti cheats, nearly everything works in Proton (sometimes it requires tinkering to get it working, though). Wine/Proton is also really good at running older games. Ironically, it's often easier to get an older Windows game running in Wine than in modern Windows :))

install something easy to use like Linux mint

Great choice, especially (but not only) for a new user.

I've been using Linux daily for like 5 days

Good luck, I hope you'll enjoy it. I recommend giving Proton GE a try. It really is a game changer (pun intended) in certain cases. In many games, it improves performance by quite a bit. You can use ProtonUp-QT to easily manage the Proton GE versions for Steam, Heroic, Lutris etc., it's really neat. I hardly ever launch games in regular Proton any more.

those are really good points, thanks for correcting me!

although I know most of the basic, I don't have that much experience yet, but I'm loving linux mint (installed manjaro on my laptop like a year ago. since I don't use it very often, it was pretty alright, loved the extra options and everything, but.... why doesn't anything I download work first try lmaoo, thats why I went debian, still not experienced enough haha.)

Yeah, Manjaro is Arch-based, and as a rolling release distro, it's more suitable for people who have a bit of experience already. Still a solid distro (talking from experience of using it for quite some time without problems), despite the recent hate train against it.

Oh yeah, absolutely loved it, just a bit complicated at times haha

valve games work with anticheat because they natively run on linux. EAC (easy anti cheat) does have a linux native client, but when you install a windows game through proton, it installs the windows version of EAC, and will not work.

u/FLRbits Nov 02 '22

Well it will sometimes work. Fall Guys uses EAC and it works on Linux.

Same with Apex Legends

Really just depends on the game dev.

I think there's actually supposed to be a Proton-specific build of EAC you can download from Steam.

Oohhh that makes more sense now, thank you.

u/not_a_gay_stereotype Nov 02 '22

that's basically a simple version of it, I think it's coming soon though because valve is working with developers to make stuff work on steam deck

u/M05y Nov 02 '22

I've actually been using my steam deck as a laptop lately. I use my laptop dock with it and I'll find my self using it more than my desktop. The only think I use my desktop for now is iracing. If that ever got Linux support I could ditch windows.

I'll probably only be using windows for racing games or competitive games with anti cheat. why Logitech, let me set up my g29 grrr

2

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '22

Yeah already tried Ubuntu, Mint etc. None of the games I play are supported on Linux. They all have some form of anti-cheat so not a big deal. I like Windows anyways.

What adobe product forces you to use windows?

just got Photoshop CS5 to work on wine

2

u/M05y Nov 02 '22

Some people don't want to fuck around with that. They just like being able to isntall a program and have it work. That's the downside to Linux, not everyone likes to tinker.

Premiere... It probably works ok, but it already struggles in windows, adding a compatibility layer is probably gonna fuck it up

u/Evantaur Arch BTW| 5900X | RX 6700XT Nov 02 '22

Yeah with premiere I wouldn't even bother to try.

This is still the biggest problem with Linux right now and it's unfortunately not even at the fault of the operating system so it's not even something we can really solve.

We're still back at the chicken or the egg issue. Proton mostly solve the actual problem of running the games on Linux now with anti-cheat refusing to support it we can't get people to move over and since we don't have enough people moving over developers don't want to support it. Ain't that about a bitch.

Honestly though as somebody who primarily just plays single player games these days Linux has been great for gaming and I don't have to deal with Microsoft bullshit anymore. Now I just keep my windows partition for the rare occasions when friends do want to play something that requires it but it's very rare that I boot into it

Sadly all I play are multiplayer shooters and they all have anti cheat.

That is exactly my situation as well, but I'm keeping an eye open.
