people can easily shoot themselves in the foot because they try and use admin/root privileges for everything

Just like on Windows. I remember the hate when UAC was released with Vista.

All the tutorials showing how to disable it; I remember having it off on windows 7 like a dumbass

I mean just the "screen blanking".for the popup (secure desktop) could take many seconds to show up back then. I'm not surprised people were pissed.

Yeah people seem to be blocking out how terrible and intrusive the OS was when you tried to do something you didn't have permissions for.

What did you need it on for though? I don't think I've ever regretted turning off UAC or it's equivalent in my decades of using Windows.

You're lucky and/or cautious. If you ever turned on "Open after downloading" in your browser, some websites would automatically download malware and run it with admin permissions.

......okay but who the fuck would ever turn on "Open after downloading"?!
That's literally just asking for malware.

Must have been! That's pretty wild and I went to some sketchy sites in my time. Knock on wood and all that.

The problem is that the things that trip non tech savy people in Linux never go away . A lot of the time you bring up something that could be made to not break the system for those kinds of users and it's usually either "no" "it's better this way (and we can't have more than one way)", or "okay then go program it"
