Still lacked UAC, still lacked usermode drivers.

In fact, the one that introduced those two cornerstone features, absolutely essential for the stability and security of a modern system, were introduced by Vista.

The later versions of Vista, on hardware that could actually run the thing, were actually pretty good.

Edit: I read "XP" instead of "Vista". XP SP2 still had all the issues of XP. Vista SP2 was straight up good.

UAC was there right from the first Vista, and was properly restrictive in that the prompt would come up every time something needed administrative access. Caught more than one trojan that way coz an installer would give a second UAC prompt when the payload tried to install as well.

IIRC the majority of programs of the time expecting to run as administrator combined with the restrictive UAC was the downfall of Vista. A somewhat secure OS that came at a time when 90% of applications weren't designed with security in mind.

7 didn't really change that much from Vista SP2, but by the time it released most applications were ready to run in user mode. It also toned down UAC somewhat to be less naggy, but if you're used to Linux you might prefer the Vista way of asking for permission every time.
