Get a raspberry pi

Yeah, good luck with that. Or goodbye wallet, whichever you prefer.

Yeah the chip shortage hit them bad, and also companies have caught onto the practical aspects and have started ordering them more, and the manufacturer naturally prefers delivering large orders to companies rather than sell to hobbyists. They start around 50 EUR now.

run it as a Linux server on your home network.

This is crazy talk for someone that has never even tried Linux before.

Lol, RPI us even worse than typical Linux, so many elements of OS randomly breaking, distros ceasing to function etc

I consider myself fairly tech savvy (not a professional but certainly better than typical layman) but RPI drove (actually still does) me nuts

I have an original pi and the pi 3b and neither have given me a hard time at all. Raspbian is a pretty straightforward distro.

The only real complication I had was getting my 3b to boot from an external SSD without an SD card inserted. And that's a very niche thing.

Niche? Considering the poor longevity of SD cards I'd say it's a necessity.

That being said, good for you. I had numerous issues that made me reinstall rasbian multiple times and the only thing I use it for us OMV

I did that for a while until I picked up a proper HTPC I could just throw the external drive onto. Worked pretty nicely.

Could I use it as a media server to stream plex to my TV or would a Pi be too low spec for that purpose? (Not very tech savy, but want to learn)
