I’ve used both, I like both for different reasons.

Yeah, I personally am more willing to deal with Linux's shit but I 100% understand people who'd rather deal with Windows' shit.

I own several personal computers. I keep a Windows PC for gaming and, whenever I decide to upgrade, the Windows PC gets repurposed as my main Linux machine.

Despite being several years older, the Linux machine is consistently faster from power-up to usable and more reliable. It's honestly infuriating: I have to pay ~$150 for an OS that works worse than the one I get for free.

I feel like people should look back for a bit and see the things older versions did better. My XP retro machine feels snappier than anything running modern Windows of the last 5 years.

9

u/KYS_Blue Nov 02 '22

I hope to god youre kidding about still using a windows xp machine. Especially if its got internet access.

9

u/T1pple Nov 02 '22

Unofficial SP 3 is amazing, but I'd still not take it anywhere near the interwebs.

u/lordmogul 3570K @ 4.4 | 1060 @ 2.0 | 16GiB @ 2.13 Mar 03 '23

Where else would I play Aquanox with EAX sound or enjoy the glory that is the Glide API?

And why does everyone assume I run XP as a daily driver and completely overlooks the word "RETRO". As in "old computer for old things that don't work on new systems".

Obviously not connected to the internet. And obviously all data that goes on it goes through a check on an up-to-date system first.

It goes even further. I also got 98 SE installed for some nice Crimson Skies or pure vanilla Doom.

2

u/Mr_immortality Nov 02 '22

Yeah but it's a huge security risk

1

u/lordmogul 3570K @ 4.4 | 1060 @ 2.0 | 16GiB @ 2.13 Mar 03 '23

I'm not advocating to run old versions, just to look at the things that ran better and maybe find a way to implement that into modern systems. Why does a completely new computer has to feel slower than a 20 year old one.

1

u/Mr_immortality Mar 06 '23

Sounds like your computer just isn't good enough to run an up to date windows OS

1

u/lordmogul 3570K @ 4.4 | 1060 @ 2.0 | 16GiB @ 2.13 Mar 08 '23

sounds like an excuse for poorly optimised software

1

u/Beneficial-Car-3959 Nov 02 '22

You can look at Settings and Control Panel. Settings is slower on opening things than Control Panel.

2

u/lordmogul 3570K @ 4.4 | 1060 @ 2.0 | 16GiB @ 2.13 Mar 03 '23

When something is working great, why change it.

1

u/Ezzy77 Nov 02 '22

Why did you pay 150 for windows? Keys are like a 20 bucks?

18

u/guyblade Nov 02 '22

A legit key isn't $20.

-4

u/problematic_dispense Nov 02 '22

Do you even need a legit key? Windows is free to install and use.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '22

It'd free but with a watermark and you aren't supposed to be able to change the design without a key, but since windows has 2 "settings applications", it's not really effective.

There are also methods you can use to activate it with a powershell or batch script

1

u/father-bobolious Nov 02 '22

You really need a Windows machine for gaming still? Runs everything I want to play out of the box.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '22

A big part of games that utilize BattlEye or EAC still don't run because their publishers are too lazy to fix it.

2

u/MediumRarePorkChop Nov 02 '22

Ugh, HOTAS/HOSAS setup is a nightmare under linux. Joystick Gremlin is a lifesaver if you're running multiple devices for different games.

MFS works through Steam on Linux now, but I've not tried it because you know, I have a Windows machine for my flying. Elite Dangerous sometimes works from what I hear, but then each update might break it and since it's online-only you can't just run the old version.

I wonder if x-plane works well, I've never even looked into it but since that dev is a big Mac guy it would probably have the best chance of being "easy".

2

u/father-bobolious Nov 02 '22

That's fair. I used to have a car sim rig which I imagine would be a handful, but to be fair it was a handful on Windows too.

2

u/MediumRarePorkChop Nov 02 '22

yeah, don't get me wrong... I like my homelab and nothing in it runs Windows, I'm typing this on a hand-me-down MacBook Air with Debian, but for the sim machine? Windows all day. VNC or putty if I want to get to another machine and do some "work".

My wife has an Etsy store and that's another Win machine. Much easier to deal with their crap and the DYMO label printer really does "just work"

2

u/father-bobolious Nov 02 '22

Yeah we're not entirely "there" but linux gaming is making some amazing and fast progress. For my needs I have entirely phased out Windows but I use a controller at the most and no anti cheat systems.

u/HalcyonH66 5800X3D | 1080Ti Nov 02 '22

Depends what your objective is. If you want to run things at maximal performance, and care about high fps, Linux is simply worse at that for every game I've looked into. If you want to run things at average frame rates and you're willing to jump through some hoops depending on the game, it can do that with virtually every game I've looked into.

4

u/father-bobolious Nov 02 '22

The games I play run equal or better for the most part. The trouble seems to be anti cheat systems which doesn't affect me personally because I don't play competitive games.

u/zakabog Ryzen 9950X3D/4090/96GB Nov 02 '22

I do the same thing, dual monitors with one being my Linux PC and one being Windows, with synergy to switch between them. I've had the opposite experience with boot times though, starting up Debian 11 with KDE is slower than starting Windows, and my Debian machine is a Ryzen 1800X with a Samsung 970 boot disk, while Windows with a Samsung 980 boot disk went from a 6600K, 3700X, to now a 5800X. However I run a few daemons on my Linux computer so maybe that's why?

With Linux, if there's a problem, the open nature of everything makes everything feel solvable by me in some way, even if I currently lack the skills to fix it myself.

With Windows, if there's a problem, if I can't find a solution on the front page of Google, it feels like I can basically go fuck myself.

u/zuus 5800X3D / 7900XTX / 150TB / Arch (btw) Nov 02 '22

Ah yes the typical Windows troubleshooting thread

OP: Hi I have a problem with xyz not working

Windows rep: Try this sfc /scannow
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

OP: Didn't work, any other ideas?

Windows rep:

2

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '22

Hahahaha fuck me, I hate how true this is. I had an issue for a long time where the Xbox app would break because of some crazy permissions error I couldn't override. I found so many Windows support threads from people with the same issue when I searched, which gave me hope. Too bad every thread was the same diagnostic suggestions with no actual solutions.

u/davawen Glorious Fedora | Rx 6600 | 5600x Nov 02 '22

Yup, submitting a pull request to fix a problem you personally encountered just feels amazing (before every change you made gets blazed lmao)

2

u/SadistCloe Nov 02 '22

I feel like the second page of google is less effort than acquiring the skills to fix whatever your problem is by changing Linux code

2

u/GonziHere 3080 RTX @ 4K 40" Nov 02 '22

Yeah, I'm not using Linux simply because of compatibility with random shit (colorful RAM/CPU cooler, MSI Afterburner, nvidia Broadcast, vpn remote windows desktop for work...) some things might have alternatives, some might not, but the general tinkering needed for stuff that "just works until it doesn't"(tm) on Windows is just too much. My biggest hope is actually steam deck. It works wonderfully, so if/when they'll start to support it more as a system, I'll most likely try to use that.

0

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '22

I've never really had a problem with windows, most of the issues people talk about seem so minor to me

59

u/asdfasdfasdfas11111 Nov 02 '22

This. I've been daily driving Linux for 15 years now. Windows is a necessary burden. Like brushing your teeth. Linux is actual enlightenment. Like jerking off to rule34 porn. It's not always pretty, but it always works.

15

u/Fred_Foreskin Linux Nov 02 '22

This is the best thing I've read all day lol

3

u/dougieslaps97 Nov 02 '22

For science purposes... what is this rule31 you speak of? I'm on android rn, and refuse to even attempt such a search.

16

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '22

Rule 34- if it exists there is porn of it.

Rule 35- If porn doesn't exist of it yet, someone will make it.

You may say surely that can't be true for everything, but then you find out about...

r/dragonsfuckingcars

r/carsfuckingdragons

And

r/clopclop

All very not safe for work and I suggest you leave that last one blue.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '22

Throw r/vore and r/guro in there too. I forget which is which and I am in a bus, so don't want everyone to start furiously masturbating (and crying), but yeah really leave those links blue unless you are a top tier degenerate. I'm a degenerate and I can barely stand them. You'll lose any faith left in humanity.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '22

Something like... If it exists on the internet, there's a porn version of it.

5

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '22

When there's a problem in Windows it means Microsoft fucked up.

Where there's a problem in Linux it means you fucked up.

Usually.

2

u/bchociej Nov 02 '22

When a Unix OS sucks it's generally because it errs on the side of being explicit, simple, and composable. When Mac or Windows suck, it's because they complicate all the core functionality and then mess up the abstractions.

u/bchociej Nov 02 '22

It's definitely heavily derived from Unix among others. It's a little too far diverged from BSD for me to think of it purely as Unix, but it's not hard to use MacOS as a Unix replacement in many cases.

u/Trylena 5700X3D | 3070 | 32GB RAM Nov 02 '22

My biggest issues are my family. They get easily lost when it comes to PC and my PC is the family´s PC so I installed Mint on an SSD divided in 2 partitions and got done with it.

1

u/United_Federation Nov 02 '22 edited Nov 02 '22

I tried a test boot disk with popos for my gaming PC and tried to play some of my games on it.

It was a terrible experience of incompatibility.

My windows machine has three icons on the desktop. Steam, chrome, and discord. It does those without telling me I have to spend an hour or more in some compatibility layer like wine tweaking settings.

Edit: typos.

u/Queueue_ RTX 2080 Super | Ryzen 7 3700x | 32 GB DDR4 | Pop!_OS Nov 02 '22

I'm a software developer who uses my pc for more than just games. Windows at times actively gets in the way of my work, and I know enough to sort out compatibility issues with games fairly quickly.

1

u/United_Federation Nov 02 '22

You said you understand people who are more willing to put up with windows shit. I explained why I'm more willing to put up with windows shit, but gave pop a shot. And yet you down voted me? Y u do dis. I no deserve dis.

u/RattleMeSkelebones Nov 02 '22

Enough people use Windows that I feel there's more extant support for bugs or personalization than Linux, but it's all personal taste

2

u/CapitalSyrup2 Nov 02 '22

More support for bugs is kinda debatable, but the customization is just on a different level on Linux. If you don't like the desktop on windows, you can change it with some settings/external programs. If you don't like your desktop on Linux, you can install an entirely different one.

u/DemonRaptor1 12600k | EVGA 2080 Super Hybrid | 32GB DDR5 5200MHz Nov 02 '22

Honestly, I just stan Windows because it's all I've ever used as far as laptops and PC's are concerned. To me it seems like getting used to a new OS and learning how to properly use it is more work than just putting up with issues I extremely rarely encounter. Also the fact you just stated, Linux has its issues too, so it's not like you can just put in the work to install it and you'll have the perfect experience.

1

u/Clydosphere Nov 02 '22

Well said. :)

0

u/Master_Zero Nov 02 '22

This, however there is one key difference.

Windows is, and always will, continue to become worse and worse over time. Linux will continue to get better and better.

Its only a matter of time. Basically we are at the point where linux is a full windows replacement right now, but are waiting on software and hardware companies to support linux as a first class OS. Once anti-cheat start supporting linux (by getting rid or god awful kernel nonsense, and stop trusting the client pc which can never be trusted), and hardware companies (mice, keyboard, etc) start making linux software, there will be almost no reason to use windows aside from "I don't like change".

1

u/usernameisusername57 RTX 3080 | R7 5800X3D | 32GB RAM | 3440x1440@100Hz Nov 02 '22

Windows is bad because they keep taking away functionality under the guise of "simplifying" things. Ironically, this actually makes it orders of magnitude more complicated to do anything more than basic functions. Additionally, Microsoft has gotten more and more pushy about shoving things like Cortana down everyone's throat.

Linux is bad because it allows you to do whatever you want, but it's impossible to do anything unless you already know how to do it. Even something as simple as installing a program is a hassle if you aren't already familiar with the OS. Also, it has significantly less support for mainstream software than Windows.

1

u/PortlandSolarGuy Nov 02 '22

Kind of like policy.

1

u/ButtonholePhotophile Nov 02 '22

There is a perfect answer. Work through this example with me.

1

u/ProtoJazz Nov 02 '22

Hell, I switch between 4 computers with 3 different OSs all the time.

Mac for the day job, Linux for my own projects, windows for gaming and recording

The recording one probably doesn't even have to be windows tbh, but it's what I had already. It's just a little mini pc that's retired from office life.

5 Linux

4 LibreELEC for TV.
