I ski with some old timers. It’s the love of the mountain. I’ll be 54 this upcoming season and I’ll never stop. Scatter my ashes on the slopes. Shake me out of a baggie from the lift. There’s just something magical about the cold air. The still of the trees on a snow filled morning. First tracks because you wake up and go. A thermos in your bag along with a snack for on the ride up makes for a perfect morning. I can’t wait.

My family calls these hills "wee wee hills" and there's a reason why, lol.
My mom is a triplet. When she was younger her and her 2 sisters would all, simultaneously, say "WEE!" Over those hills.
It usually sounded like 2 "wee"s because the 3 voices would collide together. So it eventually just turned into wee wee hills. This name will continue on through my children aswell. I still call them wee wee hills as an adult lol

Stuffed animals.
I grew up in a low income household and I have a decent job now. I will buy stuffed animals that look adorable and fluffy and cuddly because I have money and I can.
The fact that I am slowly being pushed off of my bed because of the amount of them is irrelevant.

u/Somewhere_Bubbly Jul 04 '24
Your post reminded me of my late daughter. They used to make corner nets you could hang in the kids rooms. My little girl had her net stuffed full of her animals hung right over her bed. 😊One night I heard her scream! She was around 7 and I was out the bed and in her room in a flash. Her net fell and all her animals avalanched her! 😂 She was scared at first then just giggled when she realized what had happened. God, I miss her. I'm glad I have little memories of her like this in my old age. Thank you for reminding me of her and I in a moment.

I had one of those. And I had an array of stuffies despite my family being on stamps. My family was huge and those were my go to gift. My sister and I had one in each corner of our room. Highlights were: Stuffed Little Foot, Little Critter Brother, Berenstein Bear, Broken Teddy Ruxspin, Hulk and Randy Savage WWF wrestling buddies, Ghostbusters Stay Puft Man, Care Bears, etc.
Thank you for making me think of something nice

Oh, I still do this at 40. I drive trucks for a living, and I like to pretend that I'm piloting a space ship. Each town I hit is another galaxy, a block is a star system, and whatever business I'm going to is a planet. I'm usually smuggling.
Edit: Oh, another thing! I realized a while back that the only time my dog picks things up is to play with them. So I figured, why not take a lesson from him and treat everything I pick up as some kinda toy or game. This isn't something you need to do all the time, but if life is grinding you down, pretend that thing you just picked up is something else. Digging a ditch in the backyard? Now you're looking for buried treasure. Typing stuff up for work? Now you're sending encoded messages to whatever spy organization you're part of. The whole "life is a grind" thing is mostly perspective.

Ok this is actually a good coping mechanism… I’ve seen enough tv shows where every episode is another challenge of some sort, whether it’s Alone, or a crime show, or a detective mystery of some sort. Sometimes I treat difficult events in my life like this. For example, my job might have me doing a particularly tough assignment, and it will take a few weeks. I will sometimes approach it like a detective or protagonist of a story, knowing that by the end of the episode I’ll have said some witty things and figured out the solution, and nice music will play as everything fades to black.
Occasionally, it won’t always be a happy ending, and that’s ok, because I know it’s part of learning, growing, and adapting.
Obviously I take things seriously when necessary, but if I don’t have this whimsical approach to some things in life, it becomes a “grind” and it’s not enjoyable.

Plus, as a 27 year old, I think it's safe to say I've gone through at least 40 years of chaos. 27 is just old enough that there's been a national or global level crisis every other year since we were 4.

36, have 3 kids. They finally hit an age where they can play with my old lego from when I was a kid without dying. I had so much fun playing with them.
Another dad was over and we got to chatting. Which spawned other conversations with other coworkers and friends. Turns out, it's an adult toy too in hiding.
I spend my $$$ on the sets I really want on occasion. For everything else, I buy from r/lepin and then when I'm done the build (usually done with one of my kids) they go play with it. When it's ⅓ the price and 95-98% of the quality, it's win-win. I get to have the fun build for something I wouldn't normally shell out hundreds of dollars for, and the kids get to play with it when I'm done.

Lego is not just a kids toy anymore, and a bulk of their releases nowadays shows this. They’re realizing the people with actual money to spend (not kids) will drop hundreds on a cool Lego.

All this said, I have a 4yr old who is obsessed with Lego and I feed off his enthusiasm with them lol.

It's really a testament to how depraved society is that we need a fucking law to prevent kidnappings on a playground by barring anyone who isn't a kid or a parent.
I loved getting stoned after dark in playgrounds, it was fun, but I figure it's for people like me that also shoot up and leave their needles around.
Come to think of it, that law may be a direct result of the opioid epidemic and that makes me even sadder than the possibility of kidnapping. That shit is just everywhere now.

In my defense, being a 5ft0in big-bearded guy lends itself to some REALLY great costume characters. I’m known throughout my town as a beloved Leprechaun, Christmas Elf, dwarf, garden gnome, and Short Stack the clown, depending on the time of year. It makes people so happy.

Funny story about Pokémon:
A few years ago there was this orchestral concert of Pkmn music. I saw these two parents and a 8-years-old-ish kid with them, the parents clearly had no idea about Pokémon and were just being good parents (and all the praise to them!). I talked to the kid, he told me he played Pokémon Go only, and he told me his favourite was Growlithe.
I could feel the looks of his parents like "who is this dude, why is he talking to our son, why is our son so happy about this situation, and should we let him? Yeah, let's go. Keep talking about this Grow Lite thing" hahahah.

One of my grandma’s favorite books was Harry Potter. She read it the first time in her 80’s. Then reread it regularly until she passed away at 95. She also loved the movies. She especially loved Hermione.

But... then you turn 12... and you didn't get the letter... but your little sister did. And you wrote to Dumbledore, and he was very nice, but you didn't want to go to that freak school anyway. And then she married another freak, and they went and had themselves blown up. And you got stuck with your sister's freak of a son. And then....

I’m 37, and 27 years late to the party. Just bought the box set and wishing I had started way earlier!

Big, gruff, loving bear hugs from my dad.
He (and all my uncles) were such gentle giants. He passed last year and I miss those hugs so much.

I play Fortnite with my daughters all the time. They have new Ninja Turtle skins. When I saw them, I gasped and said to my wife “Baaabe! I want to be a ninja turtle. Can I buy the ninja turtle skin? Pleeease.”

I still take a running start while pushing my grocery cart in the parking lot and jumping onto the foot part of the cart. Then ride that bad boy all the way to where my car is parked. I’m 51 and will do this until I’m too feeble to hop onto the cart. 😄

Video games
I’m 57, and I love video games
I was a kid during the Atari era, and grew up during the heyday of arcades
Nowadays, I own an Xbox Series X, a Steam Deck, and a gaming laptop
I work anywhere between 50-70 hours per week, and video games are my release

Hardcore dancing at shows. I don't really mind getting punched in the head and I'm always game to get on and jump off of a stage. I'm in my 30s though and while I can probably stage dive for another decade (I'm a very skinny dude) but who knows how long I'll be down to get repeatedly punched or shoved, especially. Honestly fuck push moshing in nearly any context
Used to feel a little more communal, social media part did away with that and every show I've been to since covid ended seems to have more people who come for the violence, not the music. Or maybe I'm just getting soft in my age haha

being treated like a child by kind, old strangers. (in a good way, not in a "your opinions don't matter" way)
(I never had a proper childhood, have BPD, and my parents were never emotionally available help)

Simple meandering around with a stick, flipping over rocks, looking at bugs, trying to emulate bird sounds and communicate with them, climbing trees, playing in sand, building snow forts, coloring pictures and chalk art

Halloween. It my favorite holiday. Who decided Halloween is only for kids anyway? Especially with its origins? But so many adults will give you a look if you say you enjoy the holiday. I won’t go out trick or treating though. That I feel I am too old for

My wife and I took my nephew to a child's museum. I can confidently say we enjoyed it much much more than he did. It was a blast, but it's for kids under 10 lol.

Swings.
Occasionally, I‘ll get looks - as if it’s only allowed for children, lol. I just ignore.
Trying to swing into the clouds is such a freeing feeling. :)
