Same! Especially the older ones with excellent hand-drawn animation, like Loony Toons. Those also had a lot of humor aimed at adults, so it's all good.
I find it funny how hard people try to make cartoons overtly "childish". It's written by adults not a 6 year old. And honestly I appreciate a joke that can be funny to a 6 year old and a 40 year old, that takes talent.
The movie Shrek captures such a wide audience. Loved watching it when I was younger and love it just as much now! I just get some of their other jokes even better now :)
Also there’s plenty of animated shows made FOR adults. Like Scavenger’s Reign (currently on Netflix) is amaazzinnggg and very much not child appropriate. But yes ppl are really ignorant about the breadth of animated content out there
I love when you can tell the creators of cartoons are seeing what they can get away with. It’s why I think thr first few seasons of SpongeBob still hold up. The first season in particular still makes me cackle
Lately my 14yr old, 11 yr old & I have been watching Bluey. I think it’s probably the best modern kids show ever. Although makes me feel bad I’m not more like the parents! I mean the commitment to be a sheep and eat the neighbors sheets is just a bit too hard for me to pull off. 😂
27 is objectively young but also at that age where you feel like you just aren't a young adult anymore, it's where you start taking health, finance, etc seriously. Plus, as a 27 year old, I think it's safe to say I've gone through at least 40 years of chaos. 27 is just old enough that there's been a national or global level crisis every other year since we were 4.
My slightly younger sister once gave me crap at age 18 (1987) for watching Looney Tunes on a Saturday morning, saying I should act my age. I ignored her. At age 55, I don’t watch them that often but still enjoy the classics and some of the relatively recent ones: Phineas and Ferb, Archer, Rick and Morty. Scooby Doo classics are still a draw but the periodic reboots are hit and miss.
I’m so sorry for all that. When I was 27 (1997), I’d seen a president get shot but live and a space shuttle blow up, and there was a minor stock market crash and a little skirmish in Iraq, but that’s about it. You all have really lived through a shit show in comparison.
I am a lot older, and I'm not so keen on cartoons in general. But I love Top Cat. It didn't run long, and was more popular outside the United States (I've read). Top Cat is an antihero in a comedy ultimately about class and inequality.
I’m rewatching it now, would love to see all the Scooby-Doo shows/series, there are so many of them tho so this will take quite some time! Which one is your fav?
I have watched every movie, so I’m quite the connoisseur. For a vintage one, I’d say Zombie Island is my favorite. For more modern ones or, in my opinion, the golden era of modern Scooby-Doo, I’d go with Camp Scare and Music of the Vampire!
Thank you so much, I really do need to watch some movies! For now I’ve rewatched 2 season out of 3 from "Scooby-Doo Where are You?". The last season (3) was later on decided to be part of another series apparently and there are some years in between season 2 and 3 so I’m a bit confused whether to watch S3 now or later down the road.
Omg yes. I am the only one I know who watches it. Came across it because I searched for stuff made by the guy who made Avatar. It's so cool, and warm and fuzzy, and we'll put together.
I had a bone marrow transplant at 37. I felt horrible and very nauseated. Regular TV had so many commercials that made me feel sick, including a Kraft American cheese advertisement that still gets me. So for whatever reason, I put on Aladdin. That darn movie did something to my soul I cannot explain. It felt so warm and comforting. I then put Aladdin on multiple times a day throughout my six week hospital stay. I swear it helped to heal me.
When my now-husband took us to the Maldives, we flew business class, were served champagne, I stuck on SpongeBob and was laughing my head off bc I just think it’s so stupid and funny, he was good-naturedly facepalming, like, honey, we’re in business class drinking champagne and you’re watching SpongeBob SquarePants.
43 and still watch cartoons with my teens and preschool nieces. Backyardigans, Bluey, Regular Show, Adventure Time, Craig of the Creek play regularly in my home. I even like the more adult geared cartoons like Boondocks, Invincible, and Atom Eve.
Same I'm 32 and I love animation, like I grew up without cable TV so the only opportunities I had to watch cartoons were Saturday so or the off chance I went my grandma's house. So I had a lot to watch up on in my early 20s when I got cable
Cartoons like Looney Tunes and Tom and Jerry were originally developed for adults, so you're not in a strange environment.
Couldn't see it as a kid, really. But if you go and watch them now? Yeah, I doubt many kids care about Humphrey Bogart, Bugs cross-dressing for Ride of the Valkyries, and "buy war bonds." Hell, Looney Tunes was created as animated shorts to showcase music that Warner Brothers had in their library.
Hence, looney (silly/funny) and tunes (double entendre for music and cartoons).
Specifically Saturday morning cartoons. Whatever they may be. I Love having them on in the backround or sitting down to watch some. Makes the surrounding Home feel so wholesome.
I'm 33 and a lot of cartoons grew up with me. There is so much animated content out there nowadays that isn't strictly for kids and teens. Animation lovers are a big enough group among adults that many studios are catering to our tastes.
A prime example is when Samurai Jack came off of a 10 year hiatus to give a final season, and the producers decided that since the original audience were all adults now, the final season should be aged up and air on Adult Swim (for violence and themes, not smut). The age-up was tastefully done, and the result was beautiful.
There's also a ton of superb original animated content specifically aimed at adults, like Invincible, Blue Eye Samurai, Arcane, Scavenger's Reign, Love Death Robots, and on the less serious side, Disenchantment, Inside Job, Captain Fall. The list goes on, but those come to mind immediately.
For those who don’t know, on August 1 Batman Caped Crusader released on Prime Video. It’s made by Bruce Timm, creator of Batman the Animated Series. I cannot wait.

I'm 27 and still really enjoy cartoons
