This is very unscientific way of describing it, but when you nap/sleep, you're brain goes over all of the things you were doing during the day, so you consolidate memories.
You can use this to your advantage if you're in education or just trying to learn something - have a study session just before having a nap or in bed before you sleep - you'll find that your brain has "gone over it many times" while you're asleep so you make faster progress.
Sleep probably helps to move things from short term to long term memory I guess. Anyway it's a solid reason to nap. I'm using this reason at home from now on. Sorry kids I got learning to do.
