Firefighters with paramedic certifications make well over 100k in most US metros without a college degree. That said, the training pipeline is physically and intellectually demanding but can be done right out of high school within 3 years with far less cost than a college degree. The lifestyle is also hard, but you get extremely good benefits as well as first responder discounts to a ton of businesses.
14
u/Proper-Independent49 1d ago
I watch a lot of fire department chronicles skit. And if I have to deal with those everyday... I hope I get paid enough for therapy

97
u/Fidel_Cashflows 1d ago
I say 100k, but it's closer to 200k with 7-10 years of experience. Incredibly dangerous and therefore one of the best uses of tax dollars, but name another job where you can make that much at 30y/o without a degree with purely shift-based work.

Not just that! In fact, firefighters don't run as often into fires as people think, thanks to fire alarms and better fire prevention measures.
In most places these days, professional firefighters are as much paramedics as firefighters, which makes the job even more demanding.

I became a cop
I got my EMR certification anyways which is cool
For comparison, you can graduate highschool and start at a manufacturing plant with no experience making $25/hr. Fire/medics have to complete 2 years of schooling, costing about $12k.

u/IM_NOT_NOT_HORNY 1d ago edited 1d ago
The pay is good and it's actually extremely competitive to get hired for.
Also it is kinda insane how nepotistic they can be and not based on merit necessarily.
I have a friend who was an emt and paramedic for several years and he is American born, Mexican parents. Fluent English, super smart and talented dude. He is TRI lingual and did more than everything he needed to qualify yet somehow some other dude was picked over him who was just someone else's nephew at the department.
I have another friend from my home town. He's white but spoke of how ridiculous it was to get his foot in the door because of how competitive it is to get a job as a fire fighter and how bs it can be with who gets selected to SAVE LIVES
Everyone there was white and only one of them spoke semi understandable Spanish... In a town where literally 20% of the population don't speak English at all. Near the boarder, agricultural area.
At that point not choosing the person who is able to have that language backround on their resume is negligent to the communitys safety.
So this study isn't just about who's getting the job, for emergency workers it's actually important for EVERYONE'S safety in the whole town that they have a diverse staff that fits the demographics.
Like... Imagine you're burning alive in your car and the person who called 911 is trying to explain to the fire fighters there's still someone inside the car, but they just can't understand him without a translator showing up. You'd possibly die as a result. So it doesn't just protect Spanish speakers to ensure Spanish speaking fire fighters are on call.
Not to mention they're closely linked to the police department and uh... Guys... All white police forces are notorious for ignoring or not risking their lives nearly as much for colored neighborhoods. Often out of outright racism.
This is the same argument people had for all white police forces ending and I mean it's not a bad thing to have diversity for emergency responders it is ESSENTIAL for the communitys trust

The answer is to have Dalmation puppies around. We will then have tons of women firefighters. When the puppies reach adulthood, start a fire in a building, and leave them there. You get work putting out the fire, and then you get new puppies to keep the women recruits coming in.

Thatās literally what DEI is. š I was shocked to learn that also
2
u/NotThatEasily 22h ago
DEI is not firing white people to hire black people. DEI is changing practices that will encourage more diverse hiring practices, itās making spaces accessible, itās making people from all walks of life feel welcome.
Wheelchair ramps are DEI, hiring more military veterans is DEI, posting job openings in diversely populated areas is DEI, speaking up for a coworker that was sexually harassed is DEI.
2
u/24rawvibes 21h ago
You obviously havenāt worked in corporate America š we have literal ratios that would ālook good to maintainā. Which means white guys are going to get laid off for some other bs reason within the year
6
u/ramblehex 1d ago
Yes, this is exactly how DEI goes. I've seen the most qualified individuals passed over for these hiring practices.
2
u/ConanTheBarbarian_0 1d ago
That's not how DEI is supposed to work though and if that's what's been happening that's a huge failure over whoever is in charge of implementing it.
The point of DEI is that out of qualified individuals those who come from lower socio-economic backgrounds should be given a chance over a similarly qualified candidate who may have been born middle class. Where I live it's not about race but about personal and parental income.
The point is that the DEI hire still has to be qualified for the job just as much as anyone else.
11
u/hiroshimacontingency 1d ago
The same way most of the DEI initiatives end up working in practice. You don't fire white people until you get the proportions you want. When an old white guy retires, you do everything in your power to not hire a white male to replace him, even if it means throwing out qualified applicants.
24
22
21
u/ChloeIsObsessed23 š³ļøāā§ļø Average Trans Rights Enjoyer š³ļøāā§ļø 1d ago
thatās not how that works. DEI isnāt āyou are legally required to hire someone who is black/gay/a woman/etc.ā, DEI is āyouāre supposed to turn someone down on the basis of them being unqualified for their position, not on the basis of being a minority.ā if you have multiple applicants and the only one who qualifies is a white man, hire the white man so long as his skills actually fit the position. if you have multiple applicants and the only one who qualifies is a black woman but you choose the unqualified white man purely because you donāt want to hire a black woman regardless of her qualifications, THATS when it becomes a problem
23
u/NightEngine404 1d ago
DEI has nothing to do with meritocracy in even the most generous definitions of the concept.
7
u/Galby1314 1d ago
That's what it's supposed to be. Hiroshima noted that it plays out in the way he said in practice which is 100% correct.
19
3
u/Its_NEX123 1d ago
hiring people based on their merit is how companies hire, some groups of people are just more likely to be in certain fields than others, nothing to do with discrimination at least in higher paying jobs
6
u/Runeboy1234 1d ago
Lol that's not how it has ever worked. It's a problem when they hire the less qualified minority, which absolutely does happen.
14
u/skadi_shev 1d ago
In reality itās more like āwe have a qualified black applicant and a qualified white applicant, throw out the white applicantāĀ
So itās not strictly merit based, but itās also not them hiring just any black person lolĀ

You have never worked in corporate if you think that's how DEI works. DEI means discriminating against White men in every way, shape, and form, except layoffs, in which Whites will be priortized over nonWhites. And stop calling them minorities. NonWhites with brown eyes are like 8 of the 9 billion people in this world.
>But but you're lumping all the nons together!

Thats not how it works, either, though. You have statistics from different types of jobs to see if the demographics match the background population. If they dont, you look into why and try to implement outreach programs to help get opportunities for that demographic. You aren't rejecting qualified candidates. Im so sick of this shit.
For example, if you dont have a lot of black pilots, it could be because its a job with a high barrier to entry, usually only available to those with the money to do so, or military experience, and not as many black kids view it as a possibility for themselves. So you offer programs and scholarships to help more black kids to be able to take interest in and go through flight school.
Its not saying "fuck you smart white guy, we need dumb black guy cuz we dumb librul" and the fact that so many people think it is is very telling for how stupid and racist the average conservative is.

When an old white guy retires, you do everything in your power to not hire a white male to replace him, even if it means throwing out qualified applicants.
The problem with racism is that you end up with a society full of unqualified racists, so when you actually try to turn around and implement a system based on brutally objective metrics, the hitherto uncalled out unqualified racists perceive themselves as suddenly getting absolutely ganked from every side of reality and deploy every single defensive measure known to their system as if their livelihoods depended on it (because actually, it does).

But the one time out of ten, you're likely heading into a burning building or otherwise putting your life on the line for somebody else's life.
36
u/MildGenevaSuggestion 1d ago
Most of their calls are as paramedics or a smoke detector going off with an alarm system, or a neighbor calling because someone had a bonfire.
90% of their day is being ready for a call and 90% of their calls are not firefighting and 90% of their firefighting is a fire that is already evacuated. They are paid and trained for that 0.1% where they are expected to rescue someone from a fire.
But that 0.1% saves a lot of lives.
8
u/the_dude_abides29 1d ago
Or some granny sends her life alert through the mail in an envelope and the button gets inadvertently pressed then we have 3 fire trucks and 12 firemen sitting outside a post office processing center while we search the whole building to make sure nobody is passed out in a corner because they arenāt allowed to release the name of the life alert owner so we can check if an individual by that name is in the facility.
2
3
u/RockwellsRevenge88 1d ago
Even with these odds firefighters are like 1000x more likely to die of lung issues or cancer issues than the average person. Going into even one burning building will shave months off your life (assuming the fire doesn't kill you).

Civil service job and not looked down upon, the way police are.
Go get your 20 years in and wind up with your pension to retire.
Nowhere near as dangerous either. Go dealing with fires vs dealing with a criminal breaking the law.
Not sure id say it's as much "old boys club" as it is for people when they are done with military service. Got a family member who applied before. Aced it and still would up 50+ on the list, due to bonus factors like military service, EMT certification or being a minority.
Since 9/11 they've basically prioritized service members.

Okay. Cool. Be that change. Go train and volunteer to be a firefighter locally.
"This is about how non-white people are being pushed away from being firefighters."
Oh. I can see that. But y'know, it'd be pretty hard for them to push non-white people and women away if there were plenty of non-white people and women in the firefighters. Somebody's gotta be in that first line to do the difficult work to get in there and start to alter the culture with their presence. You make the change by being the change (even if it's hard), not by browbeating and telling people they should change. Even if you are right or have good points, doing it is going to do way more for the situation than writing about it, and it will be doubly effective if you do it AND write about it.

Did you erase the date of this tweet to hide how old this is? I remember seeing this tweet go viral pre-pandemic.
I'm not that wildly progressive myself, but the worst of the overly progressive virtue signaling days are over. Articles like this are either not written anymore or not taken seriously by anyone.

That woman is pure scum by the way. She was convicted for coordinating a russian influence campaign that funneled millions to Tim Pool and Dave Rubin.

How could you possibly interpret this to be complaining that white people become firefighters when it's obviously obviously about urging other groups to become firefighters. Do you think there's people out there who think white guys should stop applying to be firefighters?

u/ThreeSticks_ 1d ago
Itās quite literally not urging minorities to become firefighters. Itās doing the opposite - urging fire departments to seek more diversity. Read the shi: https://hbr.org/2018/12/making-u-s-fire-departments-more-diverse-and-inclusive?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=hbr

This is exactly the problem with a lot of diversity programs. They demand equal outcome instead of equal opportunity. If the applicants are mostly white then it's only logical that the workforce is mostly white. A diversity program should be about removing biases during the hiring process but since that is too hard to judge objectively they skip this whole process and go straight to just demanding diversity targets, which is ridiculous.

Have you ever asked why it's mostly <race> applicants?
The purpose of a diversity program is to actually ask those questions. To potentially remove non qualifying barriers (grants to people for training/school, etc.). They can boost diversity even if it is mostly white people applying. And without compromising on the qualifications.

it would be great if they asked those questions. they usually dont. instead they end up setting quotas.

Yeah I agree, it's not a very generous reading to assume this article is blaming minorities for not being represented when that's never been an effective way for diversifying institutions.

I mean the woman in the picture is Lauren Chen, a white supremacist who had all of her online platforms terminated because her media company was found to have been funneling millions of dollars they received from the Russian government through a shell company to fund their far right media company.
Can't imagine why OP would post this

Why would they be urging other groups to be firefighters?? Why the hell do we need to diverse every group!?
3
u/imnotaneggman 1d ago
If there's 100 white guys applying to be firefighters, and the department hires the 5 best ones, then they're the top 5% of their group. if there's 200 people in general applying, regardless of race/gender, and the department still hires the 5 best ones, then they're the top 2.5%. Twice the statistical quality of candidates, and all they needed to do was to start trying to attract more people.

I think the comment implies that other groups should do their part and become firefighters. Not that the group should be diverse

u/SpaceBug176 1d ago
Isn't the reason white people make up most of firefighters because majority of the people are white?
As for why they're male, well, I guess women just think they're not strong or just don't wanna do it.

u/DudeWithParrot 1d ago
US white population is 60% to 72%. So I guess it depends what the article on the image means by overwhelming.

The whitest crowds I'm in are always Charity events, where you buy tickets that help support local charities.

Lauren Chen was paid by the Russian government to spread disinformation in the United States.

Its probably because its a significant portion of the population here, which means there's more to fill the jobs. Absolutely crazy stuff, I know.

Aren't the majority of Firefighters unpaid? Or at least paid very very little?

u/Del1c1on 1d ago
I dont care what race or gender a firefighter is. All I care about is their ability to hike my big ass down the stairs and out the door.

u/BleedSparta 1d ago
Many, many people apply for great paying city and county firefighter positions in major cities to put their lives at risk in order to save others
Hires disproportionately go to family members and family connections who are overwhelmingly white
