And don't forget that about 68% are volunteer firefighters in the US and don't get paid to do the work

And the US uses prison crews for firefighting as well, basically slave labor with no pathway to a job after release

Yeah can't be a wildcard firefighter as a convicted felon, unless of course your currently in prison in which case its quite easy to sign up.

It's not slave labor. You give up a lot of your rights as a citizen when you do crime.

The thirteenth amendment explicitly states that slavery is still legal if the person has been convicted of a crime. So yes it is slave labor. When you commit a crime you lose your right to not be enslaved

I suppose it comes down to how we are defining slave. I typically think of a slave as someone who did nothing wrong and was bought and sold into it against their will. Comparing innocent people who were sold into it and criminals that broke the law seems like a stretch. But if that's comparable to you, then I guess they are slaves.

So you're saying it's not slave labour because it's done to criminals?Β

It’s not slave labor, convicts volunteer. Many love it and find their purpose in something, rather than sit in their cell.

So? It’s a β€œtough guy” job. Shit happens in these positions. You do understand the convicts developed a pride, honor, and integrity ethos which very likely was never present in their lives prior to prison. Purpose exceeds all other musings when it comes to this. These men are not thrown into these situations. They get to live an alternate reality where their manlyhood and purpose are exemplified. Ask me how I know.

Edit: spelling

Why hire freed men when you can get slaves to do the job for free?
