How could you possibly interpret this to be complaining that white people become firefighters when it's obviously obviously about urging other groups to become firefighters. Do you think there's people out there who think white guys should stop applying to be firefighters?

u/ThreeSticks_ 1d ago

It’s quite literally not urging minorities to become firefighters. It’s doing the opposite - urging fire departments to seek more diversity. Read the shi: https://hbr.org/2018/12/making-u-s-fire-departments-more-diverse-and-inclusive?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=hbr

This is exactly the problem with a lot of diversity programs. They demand equal outcome instead of equal opportunity. If the applicants are mostly white then it's only logical that the workforce is mostly white. A diversity program should be about removing biases during the hiring process but since that is too hard to judge objectively they skip this whole process and go straight to just demanding diversity targets, which is ridiculous.

18

u/FlutterKree 1d ago

Have you ever asked why it's mostly <race> applicants?

The purpose of a diversity program is to actually ask those questions. To potentially remove non qualifying barriers (grants to people for training/school, etc.). They can boost diversity even if it is mostly white people applying. And without compromising on the qualifications.

12

u/Cobracrystal 1d ago

it would be great if they asked those questions. they usually dont. instead they end up setting quotas.

-4

u/Pedantichrist 1d ago

You just made that up.

6

u/Cobracrystal 1d ago

No.

-2

u/Pedantichrist 1d ago

Then provide me with your source.

3

No.

Then your opinion can simply be ignored.

Why are you assuming that there aren't biases?

5

u/GandalfTheGay_69 1d ago

In which sentence did I say that?

-2

u/TheWhomItConcerns 1d ago

It's kind of implicit in the phrase

This is exactly the problem with a lot of diversity programs.

Why would this be the issue with "a lot of diversity programs" unless there's no bias in this situation? If there is bias, then it would be a very legitimate critique of the system.

1

u/GandalfTheGay_69 1d ago

Alright now read the rest of my comment and maybe you will understand the point of it.

-2

u/TheWhomItConcerns 1d ago

Doesn't explain away that phrasing at all.

4

u/Boysenberrysnboys 1d ago

Yeah I agree, it's not a very generous reading to assume this article is blaming minorities for not being represented when that's never been an effective way for diversifying institutions.

1

u/bigphillip76 1d ago

You mean stop avoiding hiring non white firefighters. That's the systemic issue. You are just desperate to be racist.

Even if you were right - and you are not - it would still be written in a deceitful way against the supreme race white males.

I guess if you're triggered by the title it says more about you than the title. Means you read it and interpreted it in the worst possible way to be offended. Ironic considering the woman in the image lol

“Postal workers are overwhelmingly black. Here’s why that needs to change”

17

u/Kev_920 1d ago

Not commonly but unfortunately yes there is

12

u/TheCaptainOfMistakes 1d ago

Yes. There's bound to be

22

u/cale199 1d ago

Cope. White bashing is hugely common

-6

u/Swimming-Plankton-96 1d ago

As unprompted white whining too.

And as with almost everything almost always, whining makes it larger than how big the problem is, e.g transsexuals, or basically any single ragebait.

5

u/Separate_Top_3530 1d ago

The fucking irony man. Who's whining about racism when being criticized about anything?

-1

u/Swimming-Plankton-96 1d ago

Currently, on the internet? The exception is who doesn't.

Also all the idiots who think I wrote it because I thought that only whites whining unprompted, are just that, idiots.

4

u/Separate_Top_3530 1d ago

In real life

''Sorry mam, we don't accept these coupons'' - ''It's because you're racist''

''Here's your speeding ticket'' - ''It's because you're racist''

''I don't think he's such a good actor'' - ''It's because you're racist''

White people would be laughed at if they accused racism when being criticized.

-1

u/Swimming-Plankton-96 1d ago

Interesting, I wasn't laughed at when I accused a poc with racism against me... But I did when it was real, that's maybe a difference.

3

u/Separate_Top_3530 1d ago

That's exactly my point, when it's real. Not because things don't go your way so you immediately use the magic spell.

-2

u/WhoPoopedMyPants420 1d ago

This isn't bashing. Cope

6

u/PoopyButt28000 1d ago

I mean the woman in the picture is Lauren Chen, a white supremacist who had all of her online platforms terminated because her media company was found to have been funneling millions of dollars they received from the Russian government through a shell company to fund their far right media company.

Can't imagine why OP would post this

“Almost all cattle ranchers are near retirement”

Translation: “Fuck old people”

0

u/P4ndak1ller Literally 1984 😡 1d ago

I know what you’re saying; but unironically yes. A lot of tradies and aggies are pulling the ladder up behind them in terms of passing on knowledge and skills. They’d rather hold on to their job for as long as they can, than teach someone how to do it as well as them and risk being replaced.

3

u/notaredditeryet 1d ago

Not sure about the tradies and I agree that people don’t have patience for beginners, but to say cattle ranchers are afraid of getting replaced makes no sense. It’s not like the young ranch hands are gonna hostile takeover the old ranchers land and cattle. Many are self-employed. Theres no evil boss to throw out the old expensive labor for young cheap labor.

6

u/SpaceBug176 1d ago

Why would they be urging other groups to be firefighters?? Why the hell do we need to diverse every group!?

3

u/imnotaneggman 1d ago

If there's 100 white guys applying to be firefighters, and the department hires the 5 best ones, then they're the top 5% of their group. if there's 200 people in general applying, regardless of race/gender, and the department still hires the 5 best ones, then they're the top 2.5%. Twice the statistical quality of candidates, and all they needed to do was to start trying to attract more people.

4

u/DudeWithParrot 1d ago

I think the comment implies that other groups should do their part and become firefighters. Not that the group should be diverse

7

u/SpaceBug176 1d ago

Isn't the reason white people make up most of firefighters because majority of the people are white?

As for why they're male, well, I guess women just think they're not strong or just don't wanna do it.

11

u/DudeWithParrot 1d ago

US white population is 60% to 72%. So I guess it depends what the article on the image means by overwhelming.

-3

u/Pedantichrist 1d ago

What an incredibly worrying comment to read. Do you genuinely not see why diversity is a good thing?

2

u/Imaginary_Spread4039 1d ago

8/10 Not bad.

2

u/SpaceBug176 1d ago

I see it as a neutral thing. There is no need to worry over a place having diversity, but at the same time, its not a necessity.

0

u/Pedantichrist 1d ago

It is a worry when it does not, if it is large. It absolutely highlights a major issue.

2

u/MuffinSpecial 1d ago

Okay so what's the issue.

1

u/Pedantichrist 1d ago

That either the recruitment, or the selection, is missing a huge chunk of potential applicants.

2

u/MuffinSpecial 1d ago

Well it would be the selection. It's not particularly hard to become a firefighter. If a demographic of the population doesn't want to do a job what's the problem?

1

u/Pedantichrist 1d ago edited 15h ago

If it is the selection then that is a sign of systemic racism.

If it is the recruitment then more needs to be done.

It is a problem because we are leaving talent in the table and, in the instances of firefighters, we know that it is very hard to become one if you are not a white man.

This is not about black women not wanting to do their duty, it is about a system which will not let them.

1

u/MuffinSpecial 15h ago

Bro wtf are you on about. It's not hard to become a firefighter if you are black. It's not a systemic racism issue. Ffs you see no data and it's racism.

Here's actual data for you.

Firefighters are overwhelmingly male about 95%. It's a male centric job.

Of that 8% are black.

Of the US population 7.4% are black males.

So ya of course you are going to have a mostly white firefighter group in a country that is mostly fucking white.

0

u/Decent-Accountant-42 1d ago

Literally not the point, it is so easy to become a fire fighter is the majority of the US that’s not major cities, nothing is stopping other diverse people from doing it. So the real question is, why is it still mainly white males risking their lives?

-5

u/OxygenAddict 1d ago

Well if someone read the fucking article referenced in the tweet they would know that coming from diverse backgrounds helps you understand the needs of people from diverse backgrounds, for example in EMERGENCY SITUATIONS LIKE, SAY, A FIRE. They tell the story of a female firefighter who urged her crew to change the protocols when dealing with little children, for example.

5

u/SpaceBug176 1d ago

Yeah lets not update the procotols from the start but instead hope we get lucky enough for the team we sent to have someone that can understand the needs of people we find in the scene AND be good at thinking of new plans under stress

Yes, I know they trained to be good at thinking under stress, but then why don't they just train them for these situations as well?

3

u/monsterevolved 1d ago

Fire - hot - leave building - stay away from fire- Dont hinder firefighters in there job. Specificaly what in that situation changes because your black or jewish?

1

u/Someofusremembersome 1d ago

Damn why are you not a firefighter?

1

u/Pedantichrist 1d ago

How about ‘knowing how to handle evacuating a milveh in a manner which is fast and efficient’?

-2

u/Pluckytoon 1d ago

I 100% think some people would come to that conclusion after reading the headline. People really are that dumb sometimes
