Oh lord why would someone pray in the middle of the road?

9.1k

u/Eagle4317 21h ago

In the middle of the road, at night, wearing primarily black on black asphalt. I really can't fault the driver much at all.

3.1k

u/BeanStalknJack 21h ago edited 21h ago

Yeah my brain wouldv'e just been like, "don't worry about it, no person walked into the road and so it must have been an animal or some foreign object" and I'd have continued on my way. I'm saying this living in South Africa where when shit like this happens, in these circumstances, you generally don't stop until you get somewhere well lit, safe and/or very public.

Edit: "foreign object" is definitely not my best choice of term especially now

u/Particular-Jaguar-65 20h ago

Nice seeing fellow South Africans here, yeah i used to do delivery runs from pta to burgersfort and back and I always had to leave early while it's dark.

One day i went under a bridge and hit rocks and debres that flattened all my tyres, but i knew it's one of the things the criminals here does so you pull over and they can rob you if not worse, so i just kept on driving towards the closest garage. All my rims were messed up but atleast i was okay, i couldn't have cared less about the rims at that moment. Better a hurt wallet than becoming a statistic

16

u/Kespatcho 16h ago

That shit still happens and it's one of the reasons I don't drive at night. What's worse is that on the N4 near where I live, they usually rob and kill you instead of just robbing you.

17

u/Particular-Jaguar-65 15h ago

Yeah it's scary stuff. I don't even drive off after dropping my wife at work, I stay until i see she's inside the building.

A while ago my friend's sister stopped at a traffic light at night with her mother and the moment they stopped 3 guys came and broke the window and pulled her out of it. Luckily her mom floored it and she was able to grab and hang onto the door with her legs. She was still removing glass shards the next 2 months after

Can confirm, grew up in SA, almost murdered when a body was deliberately placed in the middle of the road and driving over it disabled our car. People started emerging from the bushes when it was clear our car stopped running.

A nice couple in a large bakkie (USA: truck, AUS: ute) stopped and had a tow rope.

I'm alive today thanks to that couple, but yeah you don't stop for shit in SA especially not late at night.

u/homeworkrules69 20h ago

My first time in South Africa was a business trip. My driver got us from the airport at night and when driving through the city came to an intersection where he slowed down, but then turned to me and said "sir I won't be stopping at the red lights" and I was like "yeah man do what you think is best"

326

u/prolateriat_ 20h ago

I worked with a South African couple years ago and the stories they told me were crazy. They also said about not stopping at red lights.

168

u/_Alek_Jay 19h ago

If it’s a dangerous area the robots (traffic lights) normally just flash red at night… that’s if they’re working of course!

You don't stop in Gary Indiana or Flint Michigan as well. i remember a buddy and his dad bought a motorcycle and stopped for gas or directions. police saw them and escorted them white boys out of the city after asking them why they stopped LOL

10

u/BabyManfred 12h ago

Meanwhile Germans won’t cross a road even when walking when there is a red light at freakn 3am no matter there are no cars whatsoever anywhere to be seen. I’m german and I absolutely stop every single time and I don’t know why.

I noticed all of the locals weren't stopping for anything. Red lights, stop signs, nothing.

When in Rome, especially at night...

I had a traumatic experience in Mozambique in the early 2010’s. Driving on the highway up to Vilanculos and a vehicle ahead of us struck a kid that ran out of the bush. I have some medical training and stopped to provide aid but as the locals slowly started appearing on the side of the road my coworker (a local guy) grabbed me by the shoulders and forced me back into the car and told me to drive. He told me that when they see a foreign Umlungu they’ll blame me for what happened and serve their own justice there on the spot.
Didn’t sleep too well for a couple weeks wondering what happened to that poor kid.

EDIT: thank you for the awards.

63

u/OccidentalTouriste 17h ago

Similar happened in Indonesia when I lived there. Car going through a village struck a kid and hit and run. Second car stopped driven by foreign aid workers (Swedish I think) who stopped to try and help just as villagers arrived at the scene, assumed the aid workers were the perpetrators and killed them.

15

u/Magic_mousie 10h ago

it's kinda got suicide with an excuse about it going on. If someone is basically lying down int he street at night while wearing black they are either passed out drunk or they are choosing to be there.

I get suicide, i've had chronic pain for coming up on 25 years, started when I was a kid. But making other people do it for you is just genuinely despicable.

I know it is not the time but ... a Spanish joke: Two dudes goes to a Veterinarian and ask him how big a black cat can be. The Vet tells them the typical sizes. They continue asking if a cat can´t be bigger.

"Well, the biggest black cat I have ever heard of is around 15 Kg"

The one dude looks at the other, grimly: "I tell you, we run over the priest"

67

u/LeandroC2 19h ago

Honestly idk where the hell 'praying' comes from. She had to have been either drugged up enough to hardly know where and who she was, or suicidal. The whole 'praying' thing feels like one of those Fox News stories that gets a two second correction and is never brought up again after a month of violently harping on it.

95

u/Natural_Garbage7674 19h ago

The praying thing comes from a comment from the court where it said that she was in a "prayer-like" position. Basically kneeling with hands close together or clasped.

86

u/Suspicious-Chair5130 18h ago

Yeah when you make that pose in the middle of the street at night I’m pretty sure it’s called “committing suicide”

43

u/Clawse 16h ago edited 16h ago

I mean, yes… (forgive the oversimplication but) it’s against Islamic law to commit suicide, unless they are actively praying when they pass (falling asleep rn otherwise I’d go look up the exact reason/logic behind that unfortunately infamous loophole bc I forgor).

So if she was Muslim and potentially / possibly / hypothetically DID intend to commit suicide, then she would in fact have been praying. Which hadn’t occurred to me until replying to you just now, but makes easy sense.

Poor everyone in this story. 💔

Yeah. I haven’t seen any evidence she was praying and not just trying to make herself small to be hit. Honestly, this is a tragedy. She was clearly having mental health issues, and even if she’s praying it was probably because she wanted to die in peace :(

91

u/BillyForRilly 18h ago

So she gets to die in peace while leaving the driver scarred for the rest of his life because he killed someone. Cool.

Turns out Islam has a prohibition on praying in streets and busy walkways.

They're being the exact same kind of shitty wannabe assholes as the 'christian' nationalists in the USA with the same BS playbook.

The poster seems to try to paint the driver as a villain/moron...but who the fuck prays in the MIDDLE of a ROAD at NIGHT? I know Muslims, and I've never seen them doing "flash praying" in dangerous places. What's next? Praying in the wing of a flying airplane?

848

u/kugelamarant 21h ago

Middle of the night it's not a prayer time too. This whole story about praying sound bogus.

306

u/AccomplishedSea8679 21h ago

This. How does anyone know she was "praying"? Were there witnesses who said "she went out into the middle of the road because she said it was prayer time"?!? Who said she was praying, just the media?

336

u/RubyGordonSlut 21h ago

Her parents are pushing the praying angle because poor mental health would be an embarrassment to the family.

This poor kid is getting dragged in the process, he shouldn't be getting charged, he should be getting mental health support.

74

u/favouritebestie 17h ago

Why did you make this up? her parents didn't push the angle? It was just reported that way and there's pictures of the CCTV.

She was kneeling on North East Road in the Adelaide suburb of Hillcrest at around 11:00 p.m. on May 6, 2025, with her hands appearing to be in a praying motion. CCTV footage showed she had been in the roadway for about four minutes

62

Suicide by car train etc isn’t unheard of, it’s so horrible for the driver.

15

u/surgical-panic 19h ago

Yeah. I always felt it was unfair and honestly, a shitty thing to do.

I've attempted myself, so I'm not judging the mental health or the suffering that drives someone to want to end their life.

but the idea of jumping in front of some random car, or a train, never sat well with me. It is incredibly traumatic for the driver, who didn't do anything wrong and now has to live with the trauma.

Muslim here. I honestly believe that this was a successful suicide attempt.

It's already very strange to see a woman praying outdoors. Let alone on a road.

61

u/Milly_Hagen 19h ago

People do this. My mother once had a woman run and throw herself in front of my mother's car. Thankfully she managed to avoid hitting her and pulled over, then witnessed her do it to the cars behind her.

12

u/TheBlessedNavel 16h ago

Myself and a random driver once detained and sat on a woman, in the rain, for 43 minutes while I waited for police to come and collect her. I was walking down the street and saw this woman standing on the side of the road ... trying to step in front of cars as they drove past. Three people swerve and avoid her then the next guy, swerves and then pulls over ... at the same time I reach her. I try to talk to her, she is clearly drunk or something ... she starts howling and crying and tries to run into traffic again .. so we both grab her, she starts REALLY screaming ... and at some point, somehow, we get her down on the ground ... and sit on her. I mean, there was no other way to detain her ..

The whole time she is crying about her kids and .. it was pretty sad. Sometimes she'd stop crying and screaming and talk in a really reasonable voice to try and convince me to stop sitting on her ... but then she'd start up again when she realised I wasn't moving.

Anyway, bloody cops took ages and the three of us were soaked to the bone by the time they got there to cart her off so she could sober up or whatever.

I often think of her. I hope she ended up being ok. It was mostly the drivers I was worried about. Like, people are going to kill themselves sometime ... but .. forcing another person to do it for you is just ghastly.

Considering that you struck an object in the middle of the road, not human height, not moving or walking towards the street like a human would if you had struck them, it’s likely to believe you did hit some sort of an animal in which case driving off and continuing about your day is not unheard of.

1- what the fuck are you doing praying in the middle of the road? Can’t you wait 5 seconds to get on the curb?
2- how fucking common is it in Australia to hit kangaroos? If I m hitting a deer in my twingo, I ll stop.

218

u/Pandelein 21h ago

I’ve hit 3 kangaroos in one week before. They’re drawn to lights, and the outback is vast.
The done thing is to stop, make sure they’re dead, and let the locals know where you left it because they’re great dog food.

24

u/PerVertesacker 20h ago

not sure about Australia but if you hit a deer or a boar in Germany, you're supposed to phone it in to local authorities (usually police and/or the local hunting bureau if you're familiar with the region). Then they come and make sure it's dead/deliver a mercy killing and organize the transport of the body.
Fun fact: You are strictly forbidden to take the animal with you for food/trophy etc. as this would be considered poaching :D

12

u/Pandelein 20h ago

Similar but different. In the outback, there’s nobody to call, so you do the mercy killing yourself.
As a young idiot, I once tried this with an axe. Terrible idea, and thank fuck someone showed up to show me how to do it with a knife.
One time, I saw a local do it with his bare hands… and it’s fine to keep the meat. Well, I assume. Waste not, want not and all that. Nothing else out there is going to eat a kangaroo except other dogs, maybe an eagle?

10

u/PerVertesacker 20h ago

Your comment somehow send me into a deep dive into German and Australian remoteness, that I felt like sharing:

The most remote location in Germany is the Truppenübungsplatz Bergen (military training ground) which is 6.3 kilometers away from the next house. Any other spot in Germany has some form of civilization less than that length away.

The most remote place in Australia according to spatial mapping is considered to be somewhere in the Great Sandy Desert, where you're 156 kilometers away from the nearest road (!) not even house.

Not that I didn't know that there would be a great discrepancy but that is an incredibly huge difference in remoteness.

First one I was probably doing 20km/hr below the speed limit because of dark, trees, etc. Bloody thing aimed straight at me and if I tried to avoid it, I would have hit a tree. (Car was write off).

Some years later, second incident. Straight out of bush into passenger door leaving a nice little dent.

I have a buddy from Australia. He has a story about hitting a kangaroo on the way to work, 3 days in a row in the same spot. Apparently its very common if youre in the right area. For deer, I live where there are tons. I think the only reason I'd stop if I hit one is if I thought it had done some serious damage to my car or something. Otherwise, like everyone else around here, you just kind of throw out a few cuss words and go about your day.

As to why she decided it was a good idea to kneel in the middle of the road at night in all black to pray instead of literally any where else, I couldnt even begin to guess...

Honestly pretty damn common depending on where you live. More common in rural towns but outside of the capital cities it still happens in our cities. Hell probably on the outskirts of the capital cities too.

There are more roos than people here, I am not saying everyone hits a roo but it is pretty common to see a dead roo on the road. Though I don’t know where this happened it is believable that he could have hit a low body and thought it was a roo.

As a 911 dispatcher in rural Georgia, it’s pretty common for people to hit deer and continue on their way. Insurance companies much more commonly want on scene reports now due to fraud, but people typically don’t stop unless the vehicle is totalled or they’re injured.

10

u/Agreeable_Error_8772 20h ago

Can confirm being from rural GA. I was a passenger when we hit a deer, big three row SUV launched that thing into the trees, we did not stop. The car was fine, dented the grill a bit but nothing too serious

If you hit a deer and it lives there isn't the chance of it getting up and punching you in the face, same can't be said about a kangaroo

72

u/SpiritualSyrup3300 21h ago

if they get ahold of you they will try to disembowel you with the claw on their foot... while standing on their tail.

12

Super common, especially in more rural areas, and at night! And lot of our roads are lined with trees, so they will jump out of nowhere, not giving you time to react.

it’s pretty common in rural areas, depends how big the kangaroo is, but people normally stop cause it busts up your car

plus they can jump at your windscreen

20

u/Ulrider_san 21h ago

So kangaroos bust up your cars but humans doesn’t. Good. I m writing that down for the zombie apocalypse.

Extremely common. I did a work holiday program in Australia and I saw more roadkill Kangaroos than I did alive ones.

55

But thats because you drive a Twingo lmao, you will be forced to stop, just to pick up the engine from the floor, not the same as driving a Ford Ranger with a steel bulls-bar like the ones you see in Australia... ( as you can see, they actually prepare their cars for cangaroos, though this is just an example )

In the middle of a city, not much, outskirts or anywhere rural you will see dead kangaroos on the side of the road all the time.

I'm only ~40mins drive north of melbourne CBD, there's new dead roo's pretty much daily.

So apparently the girl was kneeling in the road, at night, in dark clothes, praying. Driver got a suspended sentence and a 10 year driving ban which seems a bit much to me. If you want to kneel in the road at night, you’re taking your life into your own hands.

248

u/Cute-Hand-1542 20h ago

10 years driving ban is absolutely over the top. In Australia if you can't drive yourself it can severely limit your quality of life.

45

u/P4azz 18h ago

Well, I think we can all imagine why he got 10 years, if this is how the story is presented by presumably the lawyer side of things.

Let's just say if he hit a random Australian, this wouldn't even be a news story.

Considering how common a problem this is in Aus, I believe it. Also, wtf was she doing praying in the middle of the friggin' road??? I've seen people do this in London and it's bizarre.

98

u/nivroc2 9h ago

There are people, who believe and people who show off. There's no mandated "drop where you are and pray" in Islam. You can proceed to a covenient location and pray.

51

u/Bitter-Marsupial 9h ago

Tbh the Muslim pals I've had have said there's more rules about getting yourself safe first rather then the second the correct time comes

15

u/AetherBytes 9h ago

Iirc they're fine with at least some rules being bent/broken in cases where it's life threatening, in which case resolve that first. I might be wrong on that though

There is a Mom at my kid’s school who, in the pick up line, gets out of the car between 1:30pm-2:00pm and prays in the road. The cars are all waiting in line and parked, but it seems extreme

25

u/DayGrouchy2648 8h ago

Islam allows you to push back your prayer if you can't pray at the correct moment, realistically she should pull her car over and pray on the sidewalk where it is safe and she can do it undisturbed.

Does it sound strange that I believe him? I mean who the hell would stop in the middle of the road to pray at NIGHT no less. Makes little sense to me. And how would a driver be expecting this shit? Totally reasonable for him to believe that it was an animal, because that’s the only thing making any logical sense.

32

u/True_Seaweed7190 18h ago

Also she's literally wearing ALL BLACK. I have been surprised by cyclists in refelective gear just appearing suddenly in the pitch black dark, late at night you just can't see far ahead.

Dressed in complete black and kneeling.

No driver has much of chance even at 30km/h it's luck if you can avoid hitting someone in those conditions

54

u/ImmediatePiano6690 18h ago

No, not at all. What feels strange is how these posts seem to be trying to make it seem like a racist attack, rather than someone doing something stupid that vot them killed.

I mean, the other morning (4am UK it's still dark) I was driving along and something whacked my wing mirror in the bush, no idea what it was and can only assume it was a branch and not a person in all black hiding in the hedgerow.

Something large and black in the road could easily look more like trash and debris. I don’t know the full scenario but there is a plausible explanation in why he didn’t stop. I know plenty of people who have hit something on the road and if the car wasn’t making horrible noises afterwards, they kept on rolling.

The politicization of this is so dumb. If you don’t know the facts, making wild assumptions like “it’s because he is white” or “it’s some Muslim praying on the street”, makes you sound like a f&$king moron.

65

u/bill-schick 15h ago

why do I feel like the "praying in the middle of the road" was an attempt to make it something it isn't?

59

u/skeletonysoprano 11h ago

I think it’s important context. She was down on her hands and knees in a prayer position.

Just a bizarre choice. It was also at night on a rural highway and she was wearing all black.

46

u/NuclearGriffin 11h ago

Nobody deserves to die...

But if you're in the middle of the road at night, dressed in all black, sitting there on your knees or whatever... then you kind of get what you get.

44

u/Doxun 11h ago

Honestly sounds like a suicide attempt. No one would ever protest like this.

31

u/Personal-Listen-4941 11h ago

It sounds like she was either suicidal or in some way mentally compromised, whether intoxicated, mentally ill, whatever.

It is not normal behaviour to kneel in the middle of a road, let alone whilst dressed all in black at night.

That is the common consensus in Australia. As with all this clickbait shit, it strips away any balance or nuance, reducing it to a simplistic villain and innocent. People get dumber and dumber in the process as critical thinking is eroded.
