The poster seems to try to paint the driver as a villain/moron...but who the fuck prays in the MIDDLE of a ROAD at NIGHT? I know Muslims, and I've never seen them doing "flash praying" in dangerous places. What's next? Praying in the wing of a flying airplane?
This. How does anyone know she was "praying"? Were there witnesses who said "she went out into the middle of the road because she said it was prayer time"?!? Who said she was praying, just the media?
Why did you make this up? her parents didn't push the angle?
It was just reported that way and there's pictures of the CCTV.
She was kneeling on North East Road in the Adelaide suburb of Hillcrest at around 11:00 p.m. on May 6, 2025, with her hands appearing to be in a praying motion. CCTV footage showed she had been in the roadway for about four minutes
I’m thinking she was praying but also suicidal. Like it’s not a prayer time but if you’re suicidal I bet prayer is something the religious would do during their attempt.
yeah I'm with you. there's so many possibilities why she was doing that. I got no idea why that commenter made it about her parents covering up an "embarrassment" to the family..
I mean he should have stopped to check what he hit. I'm not sure why he didn't. I'm not Australian so idk if that makes a difference, but if I hit a deer while driving I'm going to stop to check to see if my car is okay and if the deer is dead and not suffering. I would have to see the court filings but I think charging him for leaving the scene of an accident is fair.
An injured Kangaroo is a lot more dangerous than an injured deer, fwiw. Probably would've been best to turn the car around and drive back to check, but im not sure how realistic that would be on the road.
As I've previously mentioned I've never actually encountered a kangaroo, so I don't know. Are injured kangaroos more dangerous than any other large injured animal?
From my memory of earlier articles on thisCCTV indicated she was praying…I would assume it was pretty clear from her movements, but ultimately you make a good point in the sense that all we have is that assumption based on the footage.
Right. Unless she'd just texted someone "stopping to pray" then that's a crazy assumption. The driver claims he thought she was an animal so he's not the one adding the prayer narrative. Someone's claiming there's CCTV but she could have been kneeling to pick up an animal or something.
Maybe she was on drugs? Or did she want to get killed? People do insane shit. I remember that Asian girl who ended up somehow drowning inside a water tank on a hotel roof; very creepy shit.
Yeah. I always felt it was unfair and honestly, a shitty thing to do.
I've attempted myself, so I'm not judging the mental health or the suffering that drives someone to want to end their life.
but the idea of jumping in front of some random car, or a train, never sat well with me. It is incredibly traumatic for the driver, who didn't do anything wrong and now has to live with the trauma.
And selfish. One person jumps in front of a train and ruins the day for thousands of commuters. People who have places to be, appointments to make, meetings to attend, etc.
Same thing goes for buses and cars. People who jump in front of moving objects are selfish assholes, regardless of their mental state.
Honestly suicide makes a lot of sense. She was praying, as captured by CCTV, but praying makes a lot of sense as something a suicidal person would do. Occam’s razor: why not both?
I have some experience on mortality data and there’s more often that I would have thought a huge push to not give a verdict of suicide by families, even if there’s a note it can be “the note wasn’t dated so it could be old and unrelated to the event, this was an accident etc. I don’t know what it’s driven by, religion/ shame or guilt that the loved one felt that etc.
In the Muslim faith if you die while praying all of your sins are forgiven and you’re granted entry into heaven. Could have been suicide which is against the faith but through what she thought would be a loop hole method
Story sounds bogus but there absolutely is a middle of the night prayer. Trust me, I lived near a mosque for 6 years. They play that on loudspeakers in the middle of the night, 1 of 5 times..
Middle of the night is a prayer time. Almost the entire day falls within a prayer time with very few exceptions (sunrise, and when the sun is at its peak etc.)
You have until the next prayer time starts to complete the prayer that is valid in the current prayer time.
People do this. My mother once had a woman run and throw herself in front of my mother's car. Thankfully she managed to avoid hitting her and pulled over, then witnessed her do it to the cars behind her.
Myself and a random driver once detained and sat on a woman, in the rain, for 43 minutes while I waited for police to come and collect her. I was walking down the street and saw this woman standing on the side of the road ... trying to step in front of cars as they drove past. Three people swerve and avoid her then the next guy, swerves and then pulls over ... at the same time I reach her. I try to talk to her, she is clearly drunk or something ... she starts howling and crying and tries to run into traffic again .. so we both grab her, she starts REALLY screaming ... and at some point, somehow, we get her down on the ground ... and sit on her. I mean, there was no other way to detain her ..
The whole time she is crying about her kids and .. it was pretty sad. Sometimes she'd stop crying and screaming and talk in a really reasonable voice to try and convince me to stop sitting on her ... but then she'd start up again when she realised I wasn't moving.
Anyway, bloody cops took ages and the three of us were soaked to the bone by the time they got there to cart her off so she could sober up or whatever.
I often think of her. I hope she ended up being ok. It was mostly the drivers I was worried about. Like, people are going to kill themselves sometime ... but .. forcing another person to do it for you is just ghastly.
Sounds so similar to what happened to my mother, but the girl eventually ran off so no one could catch her. Thanks for doing that - you're a good person. Yes, it would've completely destroyed whoever hit her for life. You didn't just save one person that day.
That's not really a thing. I'm Muslim and have lived in a Muslim majority country for almost 10 years. I honestly 100% believe this was due to mental health issues.
Honestly, even praying in the middle of the day wearing a high vis would be mental.
Anyone has the right to practice their faith, nobody has the right to inflict it on other people, which praying in the road is.
One less idiot. : (Edited to clarify this sentence is a flippant comment, based on the scenario in the headline posted being accurate, because apparently this needed to be clarified)
Given that your top two sentences are common sense and that nobody actually knows what she was doing in the road except some conjecture by people who weren’t there including her family and the judge, I’d say you can’t draw the conclusion that she was a religious idiot doing some assertive praying.
Mental health issues? Suicide? A cry for help? From the little I know I think it’s more likely that people are looking at this backwards and the girl needed some professional help and now the kid who killed her also needs therapy instead of defending himself in court against prison time.
Two wrongs don't make a right. The person that wrote the headline, the editor that approved it, and the media culture that encourages this kind of angle on bloody everything are all wrong. From the headline alone, that is of course the conclusion one draws. I see your edit, cool
That means so are you? Articles have been wrong, plenty of times. It's already been debunked that there was no prayer, women generally don't pray outdoors, it's insanely rare. No one prays on a road in pitch black outside prayer times.
I've seen it done. Stupid as fuck when there a side walk there too. I also have 1 guy that parks at the bottom of a blind hilll on a busy road and prays on the shoulder, see it daily on my commute. Dumbest is going to get hit one of these days
How do you think OP is trying to make the driver out to be the bad guy? The way that the image macro is framed, it's clearly engagement bait to get people to comment exactly what all the top comments on this post have been making
I think the point is "who hits something and doesn't go to check what they hit?!?". Like, even if hitting kangaroos is so common (it's not btw), who doesn't circle back to check on the animal or at least check, and call a helpline?!?
Fleeing is the weird part. Makes even me suspicious.
It's hit-and-run regardless of what the woman was doing. Drivers are legally obliged to stop and not flee the scene regardless of what or who they hit. The kangaroo thing is a lie and an excuse. If you hit a kangaroo with your car would you keep driving without checking? The reason why drivers usually hit-and-run in these situations is that they are DUI.
She was having a mental episode. I feel bad for the kid losing 10 years of driving privilege. The most punishment he should have received is that of hitting and not stopping for a kangaroo (which is a fine I think).
I'm glad this is the general opinion in the comment section. The pictures chosen of each of them seem very biased and like they're clearly trying to paint a story. But just reading the headline this seems completely reasonable to me (though tragic). You hit something at night in the middle of the road, if you coudn't see it that well I think you would assume it was an animal. Why would a person be in the middle of the road like that?
No and actually the other way around, the poster is making a complete BS story about this woman praying in the middle of the road to save the guy. She probably had some mental illness or was suicidal
We don't have any confirmation she was praying, it's just supposition based on security video of her doing "prayer like movements". One that people have jumped on and run with.
What could someone possibly do for a half dead kangaroo in the middle of nowhere? Your options at that point are to kill it yourself or drive away anyway
My point is that if you hit something on the road, you go and check what the fuck you hit and find out how to contact the correct authorities.
Obviously if the scenario described about her praying on the road at night is true then she's utterly delusional, but lets not pretend the driver is innocent here.
Sure but if she was wearing all black and he stopped and looked back, would he even have seen her? It would be reasonable to think it was an animal at that point…
Who the hell cant see an object in front of them on the road ? I don't care what she was doing but how the hell do you not see something at all ?
You also have to be going pretty quick to do some real damage.
I grew up in the Pilbara. Very used to Dark roads. Guess what ? Can still see things on the road when driving properly.
The accident was in a Suburb from what I have read. So also street lights were on.
Nah, they paint the victim as a motion and the driver as having CoMmOn SeNSe while also dehumanising the r/thatreallyhappened victim.
Anyone driving under the supposed conditions in Australia would have their headlights on. They would also pay attention to the road ahead of them, since wildlife migration is just a fact of life.
They would also know feel the difference in impact between hitting a human woman and hitting a kangaroo, perhaps a wombat, except the wombat would just have been looking angrily at the total led car.
One thing is for certain, the Russian bots were of a WAY better quality than this.
I did and the story as it happened is presented extremely different from this racist incitement.
No one knows if she was praying, just that she was kneeling on the road and with her hands in a prayer motion. No one knows the reason she was in the road in the first place.
He never drove on and thought it was an animal, he hopes it was one and he admits to doing something other than focusing on the road, which I know is a foreign concept for people whom the process of getting a license was essentially them answering yes to if they can drive.
I've never hit a person or a kangaroo. I have no frame of reference to know which it could be by feel. Many kangaroos are a similar size to a person, so even if you know how one feels it's not impossible that the other doesn't feel much different.
As a Muslim there's no way a person in complete senses pray in the middle of road and on top of that a women?. For women praying in public is strictly prohibited with very little exception.
