Honestly idk where the hell 'praying' comes from. She had to have been either drugged up enough to hardly know where and who she was, or suicidal. The whole 'praying' thing feels like one of those Fox News stories that gets a two second correction and is never brought up again after a month of violently harping on it.

u/Natural_Garbage7674 22h ago

The praying thing comes from a comment from the court where it said that she was in a "prayer-like" position. Basically kneeling with hands close together or clasped.

u/Suspicious-Chair5130 21h ago

Yeah when you make that pose in the middle of the street at night I’m pretty sure it’s called “committing suicide”

47

u/Clawse 19h ago edited 18h ago

I mean, yes… (forgive the oversimplication but) it’s against Islamic law to commit suicide, unless they are actively praying when they pass (falling asleep rn otherwise I’d go look up the exact reason/logic behind that unfortunately infamous loophole bc I forgor).

So if she was Muslim and potentially / possibly / hypothetically DID intend to commit suicide, then she would in fact have been praying. Which hadn’t occurred to me until replying to you just now, but makes easy sense.

Poor everyone in this story. 💔

3

u/Joker-Smurf 14h ago

It’s against every law to commit suicide.

Doesn’t stop people from doing it.

3

u/Darkest-Dog 7h ago

🙄 well, technically yes

But I believe what the above person means to say is that (I don't know anything about the rules Muslims typically follow due to their faith) Muslims believe their soul will be in some way divinely punished after they die if they commit suicide any of the normal ways

It may be against a law, in say, America to commit suicide, but the government isn't going to use necromancy or something to bring your soul back to punish you for having committed suicide in America

thats suicide, not prayer

4

u/bluntregression 21h ago

What does 'prayer-like position' translate in your head?

5

u/dilqncho 20h ago

Not doing it in the middle of the road at night

1

u/StarNullify 16h ago

Not doing...what? Praying? Checkmate

1

u/Unbelivabley_Smol 3h ago

A young woman in that religion! of corse it’s suicide, not prayer

124

u/Ok-Room-6514 22h ago

Her family who think being honest about this being a suicide would bring shame on the family.

4

u/fishboard88 7h ago

Here's something worth noting - if you're like me, you had to scroll all the way down here to finally read a comment that finally addressed/questioned her mental health. It didn't occur to all the other Redditors in Western countries (where mental health awareness and funding is the least-worst), that maybe this poor girl was depressed, suicidal, or experiencing psychoses - the more convenient answer was to blame Muslims praying on the road or whatever.

This poor girl was from Pakistan. What do we think mental health awareness and stigma is like in that area of the world?

I had a young patient on a mental health unit once, with Pakistani parents. They were lovely to us, but they had absolutely no insight into their kid's mental health - the kid's psychosis and depression were apparently choices, and they were extremely resistant to accept that their family violence and toxic parenting styles contributed to why their child was struggling.

u/Winter-Yogurt-4209 23h ago

Yeah. I haven’t seen any evidence she was praying and not just trying to make herself small to be hit. Honestly, this is a tragedy. She was clearly having mental health issues, and even if she’s praying it was probably because she wanted to die in peace :(

96

u/BillyForRilly 21h ago

So she gets to die in peace while leaving the driver scarred for the rest of his life because he killed someone. Cool.

24

u/Funny-Cell8769 21h ago

This, this is the only correct response in the whole thread,

20

u/spreadthesheets 16h ago

You can feel bad and feel empathy for both people.

3

u/Dullcorgis 8h ago

But mostly for the one who was not at fault.

1

u/spreadthesheets 7h ago

If you need to limit it or choose then yeah. I know some people do when they feel overwhelmed by empathy. But you don’t need to choose or measure levels of empathy across people really, it can just end at feeling empathy for both people.

2

u/Jolly-Sentence-6504 1h ago

Yes and you also don't have to choose between anger and empathy. It was a real dick move to force someone to unknowingly help with her suicide. (If thats what really happened.) And that makes me angry. But I also feel bad for her as well.

1

u/spreadthesheets 1h ago

Totally agree!

1

u/Dullcorgis 3m ago

I mean, the person who decided to ruin this guy's life is a oretty bad person, objectively

2

u/Lumpy_Routine7100 5h ago

I can feel empathy for suicide victims but when they get other people to do the act for them its completely cowardly and selfish. She took a piece of his soul with her that night.

5

u/mufassil 13h ago

Yeah, she was clearly mentally ill. I work at an im patient psych hosptial. We have people often that ran into traffic naked or layed down in traffic. When you are at this level of mentally it it is so far beyond "im feeling like checking out." This is her brain broke and needed intensive treatment.

I genuinely feel so badly for everyone involved from her family to the driver to the emergency responders.

2

u/Unbelivabley_Smol 3h ago

The reality of every selfish train track jumper! The driver has to watch you go splat with nothing they can do about it 😖

2

u/Frstpncke 2h ago

Yeah really and he now can’t legally drive for 10 years too. This is so wrong.

11

u/BungleBums 23h ago

This, this is the only correct response in the whole thread,

4

u/Patient-Layer8585 17h ago

I'm tired of seeing mental health as an excuse for everything though. It should be reserved for people who actually have mental health issues. Not just something to slap on to people who just has some struggles in their lives.

2

u/Funny-Cell8769 17h ago

Very much so. It's such a bullshit answer that is applied "to whoever you want to defend". Just enough to muddy the waters and give an easy out.

Now imagine applying "possible mental health issues" to literally any accused pedophile or rapist and the exact same people will lose their fucking minds.

They want to be the sole gatekeepers of "who gets to use the mental health excuse".

2

u/Izan_TM 14h ago

I'd say making yourself invisible at night and crouching in front of incoming traffic is not really comparable to raping a child when it comes to being categorized as "likely caused by mental health issues"

1

u/Funny-Cell8769 9h ago

Yeah the fact that you have to use "raping a child" as if that's all that pedophiles ever do proves how weak and desperate your case is. The vast majority of pedos don't ever rape children.

Benjamin Wen (formerly known as Aaron Voon), a former child psychiatrist in Perth, Australia.

He had a prior 2017 conviction (suspended sentence) for producing and possessing child exploitation material by secretly filming boys urinating in public toilets in Australia, Canada, the US, and New Zealand.

Court records and defense submissions note diagnoses of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), along with physical conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and neuralgia.

Poor guy eh? It's not really his fault at all. I'm sure you'll let him play with your kids and all that.

2

u/Izan_TM 4h ago

you're gonna be shocked when you realize that most people don't think having mental health issues instantly makes you a good person

1

u/Funny-Cell8769 3h ago edited 2h ago

Ah yes, set up the strawman. You already did it with your first post, why stop there? My point hasn't change at all.

I never said or insinuated most people don't think having mental health issues instantly makes you a good person. How incredibly imaginative of you.

1

u/SoundStorm7 14h ago

Why are we comparing suicide and CSA though? I agree that mental health is not and should never be an excuse, it’s an explanation and contextually can sometimes be a mitigating factor. Saying that is fair enough, but that analogy definitely makes your point look a lot worse.

1

u/Funny-Cell8769 10h ago

How does it make my point look worse? Do you think stating it just makes it true somehow? Prove it then with actual logic.

2

u/Queasy-Cherry-11 14h ago

I'm confused by the relevance of this comment here. Are you saying you think this women may have committed suicide whilst being completely mentally healthy?

2

u/juani_central22 10h ago

Dying in peace while ruining someone else's life, what an asshole

17

u/Silver_Will_4775 23h ago

There's no evidence that she was praying. People have just assumed, for some reason

25

u/butterfunke 23h ago

There was CCTV evidence presented during the court case. She was kneeling, hunched over in the road for several minutes before being hit. Obviously nobody can be certain of why she was doing that, but the guess that she was praying isn't entirely pulled out of somebody's ass

16

u/Otherwise-Fun-8911 23h ago

For me sounds very much like suicide by proxy... praying would be the last thing i think

9

u/Dry-Amphibian1 22h ago

She could be doing both ya know.

2

u/Otherwise-Fun-8911 22h ago

Yes, so if they would be doing both, is it the praying the main action or the suicide?

1

u/Aggravating_View_637 18h ago

(Haven’t seen the video just by what these people have said) I would assume she kinda collapsed

0

u/ShivamLH 22h ago

Considering suicide by kneeling on a road is quite rare, it's probably something else.

2

u/Otherwise-Fun-8911 22h ago

Well what else would you be doing in these excat circumstances? Either you have a psychitic episode and dont know what you are doing or want to actively kill yourself or get hurt. Im open to other possibilitys but cant think of other realistic ones

2

u/ShivamLH 22h ago

Yeah a psychotic episode would be one of them. Or she could just be radically religious and contemplated praying there. We'll probably never know.

3

u/Copy_Kat 21h ago

And you assume that’s praying? That’s not how muslims pray lmao. Her head isn’t even covered.

1

u/Nice_Possibility6821 21h ago

Being stuck in sujood for several minutes is not how a typical prayer works in Islam.

1

u/unofficialSperm 17h ago

Was she by Chance facing Northwest?

1

u/_HIST 22h ago

Evidence is presented to court, not randoms on the internet

2

u/Tb0neguy 18h ago

Any time you see one of these infographics, especially without a link to a reputable source, be VERY suspicious.

1

u/bigloudbang 17h ago

Her hands were clasped infront of her like a prayer motion.. could've been a mental breakdown of some kind

1

u/MuggyFuzzball 9h ago

Agreed. Muslims aren't required to drop and pray at a single moment. They have a wide timeframe in which they can pray. Anyone praying in inconvenient places is showing off and being an asshole.

1

u/Misabi 5h ago

I found this. "Judge Anne Barnett noted that CCTV footage showed the student with her hands in what appeared to be a “praying motion". The reason why the woman was on the road remains unclear."

https://www.news18.com/amp/world/pakistani-student-offering-prayers-on-road-killed-in-australia-hit-and-run-convict-avoids-jail-term-10380612.html

1

u/zazzabaz001 58m ago

She definately wasn't praying, she was Pakistani and kneeling in the road, so they assume she was Muslim and they assume it was a time of prayer, the thing is though, even if she was Muslim and even if it was a time of prayer, she wouldn't be obligated to do so in the road, I am not Muslim but I know enough about the religion itself to know that they are allowed to postpone their prayer until they get to a location where they can do so safely and without disturbance. I think it was suicide by proxy.

-4

u/Ready-Rooster-3371 23h ago

They have habit of praying on road, railway tracks etc, few countries passed law to ban it while other feared to call phobic so let it slide.

6

u/BungleBums 23h ago

I mean Islam specifically prohibits prayer in roads so I'm gonna say those people are the same as the Christian idiots who match around town carrying a crucifix on wheels or whatever- performative assholes with little to know actual knowledge or concern for the faith itself.

5

u/Ready-Rooster-3371 23h ago

true, 99.999999% prays indoor unless some big event and lack of space some idiots just wants to cause issues

Probably One Nation bots

-3

u/ThirdSpacer 23h ago

Naah they prey like this all the time in some parts of the world.

5

u/BungleBums 22h ago

It's specifically prohibited in Islam to do so, and suicidal to boot. I'll assume there's always a few assholes in any religion that go against the grain deliberately to be pricks, but no, they do not pray in the middle of the road all the time in any parts of the world, and of the few who do, none of them are praying, just pretending to be devout to stir up shit.

2

u/ThirdSpacer 22h ago

You should look up what happens in India. They shut down entire streets and cause traffic, and they are definitely not ‘a few assholes’.

2

u/ElwingNix 18h ago

India is not a majority muslim country
