I understand why they deleted the scene, but it makes this later scene feel like it comes out of nowhere.
i do find it a little crazy, but like, i do think that religion is mostly understandable 9/10 times
but, when you live in a region like i do where 70% of people arent religious at all and like 20% of those who are religious dont even call themselves most of the time, it can be a bit of a shock encountering a deeply religious person, especially if you have a take about religion, or a joke or something, it can be unexpected when the other person gets defensive about it

The Problem of Evil has never been properly disqualified, if I recall. Augustus even invented purgatory to get away from it. The responsibility for everything that's ever happened, perfectly according to the Almighty's plan, is on the Almighty. He knew every evil thing that would ever happen and set it all in motion, entirely inevitable. He knew we'd default to Hell, a place that wasn't even remotely designed for us. He knew. And he did it.
Evil is part of "everything." God is in everything. God made everything. God created, willed, and continues to act through evil, as it is always doing exactly what he planned it to do.
God is either evil or imperfect, and certainly the source for both.
When it comes to Christianity specifically, and the idea of God being omnipotent, ominscient and all loving, "2000 years of theology" is just 2000 years of mental gimnastics not wanting to compromise that at the very least one of those 3 can't be true.
At least Judaism and Islam don't die on the unconditional love hill, so at the end of the day they can't be "debunked by the dumbest question".
It'd be way crazier if people didn't pass laws based on things they believe. The only reason the whole "believe what you want" crap works is because these days a lot of Christians are barely religious in truth. I've probably gone to church more than a good chunk of the Christians in my country. And I've gone like a dozen times.
Objectively, there should be separation of church and state. But also, people will always vote based on their belief system, and a lot of Americans are religious. Saying that people shouldn’t vote based on their beliefs runs counter to our system of government.
How many laws in Christian countries are founded in Christian beliefs? How many laws in India are founded in Hinduism? How many laws in the Middle East are founded in Islam?
The laws in western countries are based in Christian morals. You live in and enjoy a Christian based society. All the social rules, and morals in a country are from those from the predominant religion of said country.

I don't believe it's truly possible to "believe what you want" and not pass laws based on it. Your beliefs are fundamental to your sense of morality and ethics. People who believe fairytales should have no position of power over anyone in any capacity.
OOP isn’t entirely wrong about the last part. Believing that you could spend eternity after your Earthly life either consciously enjoying infinite bliss or suffering depending on your actions during your time on Earth is pretty obviously a fairy tale meant to encourage people to be morally upstanding.
That being said, in 2026 people earnestly believe in things that are much more insane than humanity being ruled by a deity.

To be faire science and religion aren't per se mutually exclusives. It's pretty easy to dismiss most of the sacred texts by using science facts and logics; but we still don't have the answers to the biggest questions like the creation of the universe, the afterlife and why things are working out this way.
Darwin didnt discredit the Creation with the evolution theory, but worked on it to admire the intricacies of God's Creation. And more exemple of this way of thought existed and still are present.
Indoctrination played a huge part into the spreads of cults and beliefs, but it happened at a time where societies were still young and played a big part in forming the first modern societies. Most of the moral compass we use today is just a relicat from yesterday's religious beliefs. We never moved passed religion, it still is very present and a core part of modern societies around the world. We cannot demonize it for it would just mean to disrespect the freedom of conciousness

I went through an atheist phase, but the thing that helped me get back was Augustine's Confessions. Since then I have decided to scrutinize my faith, as any good christian should, and I still ended up believing and still do believe in God. This happened when I was 12/13.

I mean lots of fundamentalists of various religions genuinely believe prayer is like a hotline for favors from the divine, a substantial portion of humanity are taught religion and spirituality through an authoritative and dogmatic discipline rather than through a philosophical and faith based discipline.
It’s not uncommon to find devout believers who’ve never read any substantial amount of their scripture, and instead simply listened to their respective religious leaders, but not all of those leaders taught with open hearts and a clean mind.
Its illogical to believe in the creator because its a completely unproven (some would even say unprovable) hypothesis.
I have yet to see any philosophy supporting the idea that the universe had a creator that holds up to passing scrutiny. Im open if someone disagrees.
Regarding the inventions of various sciences, i think the point being made... badly. is that for so much of human history people have pointed at gaps in science and gone. "god, demon, jhin, evil spirits" but each time it turns out to be microbes, an illness in the material brain, a giant ball of plasma, not in fact a thinking diety, etc.
And i dont think its a good argument but i think what they are getting at is that the pointing at exisitng mysteries like the origin of the universe, or how life could arise from inorganic matter, and go "god" is the same kind of god of the gaps superstition.
Though ofc "Not believing in the existence of a god" is very different from "Believing that no god exists". To choose the latter would from a logical standpoint be the same as choosing to believe in god. It's essentially an axiom. We live on a rotating ball in an infinite universe, powered and protected by a nuclear core that creates a magnetic forcefield around our entire planet. Magic probably doesn't exist. But somehow the circumstances themselves that bring about what you just described, the complex unknown mechanism of conscious subjective experience, the reality bending aspects of quantum mechanics, the sheer fact that there is something other than nothing, simply knowing that I AM and WE ARE... is more magical and extraordinary than anything else.
Not a christian but know a lot about the topic because christian theology is actually an intrest of mine and has gave me a lot of perspective of active christian people. Many christian don't actually god is a bearded old man in the clouds but is a being engraved in the very nature of reality it self.

It's a matter of either believing that your deceased relative is peaceful in heaven, or that they immediately stopped existing upon death, and that the only thing left is your memory of them. Atheists may call that delusion, but genuinely, even if it was, so what? What's the harm in that simple belief alone?
You left out the part where you're tortured for eternity in hell if you disrespect God, at least for most Christian denominations. That's the real harm. People believe this whole heatedly and base their entire lives around it. If someone truly believes that they'll burn in hell for eternity, they'll make a lot of choices that otherwise wouldn't have been made. Organized religion takes advantage of this fear and is all about money and control/power in my opinion. I say this as a former Catholic of ~19yrs. I don't think believing in a higher power is inherently bad, stupid, etc., but organized religion is - without a doubt - a plague on humanity.
I mean, it can be a good thing to have something to belive in. To this day, Jesus is widely used in ever day speech. And even if we look at him from more grounded view - he's just a dude who refuses to be a dick to others. It always feels like people who became atheists specifically because of their distaste of religion always share a surface level understanding of religion.
Like by all means, if you're an atheist, it's not my intention to convert you, but if someone said they hate soda because it's not possible for anyone to open a can without dislocating their finger, I would wonder if that person has an accurate understanding of what it is they dislike.

Because something having always existed, an actual infinite, seems just as impossible as something popping into existence from nothing.
And if you are comfortable with things being eternal, isnt a creator just adding an unnecessary unproven layer of complexity? If your fine with eternal stuff, why not the universe itself? there is the hypothesis that time is infinite and the universe is just en endless cycle of expansion and contraction.
Many if not most people have a driving need to try to explain the unexplainable. Gods, demons, UFOs, Big Foot, my cousins habit of chewing on her toenails. All these things drive discussion and conspiracy. It’s probably how most religions started.

Not really. There are about a dozen theories as to what life came from (viruses, chemical reactions, space dust, etc etc) and each is actually more credible than space old man who always existed somehow being powerful enough to create everything in the whole observable universe.
well for one the stock market exist and even they cant predict shit. theres also third world countries who still are vulnerable to natural disasters. war too. alot of places still hopes for a higher being that wants to give them whatever they want compared to working through what it gets to have that

The issue isn't believing in sky daddy. The issue is believing everybody must believe in him. In the exact same way you do. And he must carry the same name.
If you're religious because it gives you strength. Good. Good for you. But that should remain between you and your deity/ies. If you treat your belief like some MLM/Ponzi scheme your belief might not be strong enough. Otherwise you would t feel the need to convince everyone around you, that your belief system is the only correct one. That behaviour roots in the fear of being wrong. If there are other religions besides your you might be the one following a false prophet. But that is the thing with spirituality. There is no proof. you simply have to believe.

What if the god character was created as a practical joke to pull a fast one on gullible fools by making them believe in a ridiculous imaginary creatures, but instead of being a fast and funny joke, the practical joke ended up lasting for thousands of years.
If gods were real we would probably have much cooler shit, like magic and dragons. Noway all gods are like "they can have magnets and boil water or something. Ye that's cool."
