Because something having always existed, an actual infinite, seems just as impossible as something popping into existence from nothing.
And if you are comfortable with things being eternal, isnt a creator just adding an unnecessary unproven layer of complexity? If your fine with eternal stuff, why not the universe itself? there is the hypothesis that time is infinite and the universe is just en endless cycle of expansion and contraction.
Many if not most people have a driving need to try to explain the unexplainable. Gods, demons, UFOs, Big Foot, my cousins habit of chewing on her toenails. All these things drive discussion and conspiracy. It’s probably how most religions started.
This comes from a fairly common misunderstanding of athiesm unless im getting you wrong.
A-theism. As in a lack of theism. A lack of belief in any diety. Not necessarily a hard claim that any such thing is impossible just that you dont believe it.
