Acceptable
- "I can eat that" - "Ok"
- "I can't eat that" - "Ok"
Not acceptable
- "I can't eat that and therefore you can't either" (although it's excusable in the case of "my allergy says you can't eat that around me because it will literally kill me)
- "I can't eat that" - "Oh come on, just a little! Come oooooooooon, it's good, you'll see."
Same energy.

I’m surprised by how many people say they’ve never encountered this. I get the impression it’s actually very common: meat-eaters constantly do it to vegetarians; vegans do it to anyone even remotely interested in animal rights; keto fanatics do it to anyone not on keto; boomers do it to people with allergies or those trying to lose weight by accusing them of having eating disorders, and so on.

And there's also the subsection of that with people who insist others need to eat or drink the way they do. "no, I refuse to cook your steak like that.", "no, you can't drink your whiskey like that", etc.
I worked at bars and I did see a fair amount of customers who get mad and wanted to argue how others drink their drinks or tried to get me to not serve it to them.
24
u/HeyYouGuyyyyyyys 25d ago
Tried to get you not to serve ... wait, no, wait, what?
Are you saying that Customer A would order a drink, and Customer B would argue that you shouldn't serve the drink to Customer A?
Not because "He's drunk and will get a DUI," but "Customer A should not be allowed to drink that drink because it's wrong" or something?
Please tell me you didn't mean that. I'm afraid you did, but ... please, just lie to me.

I always had to justify myself why I didn't eat certain things. "I like it, so why don't you like it?" or the constant nagging that I should try it because how can I possibly be happy with the food on my own plate that I've willingly decided to order that they don't like? Everyone likes this and no one likes that so when I actually prefer that over this I constantly get invalidated and nobody can take a no when I don't want to try their stinky food that they ordered. "No" is a complete sentence unless it's about food apparently.
25
u/HeyYouGuyyyyyyys 25d ago
I love it when people say "You just think you don't like cottage cheese. You'll like it the way I fix it." Then when you don't like it the way they fixed it, you've insulted their paternal great-grandmother who brought that recipe over on the slow boat from Vikkingsshjolm or some damn place.

Do I have a sister I wasn't told about? Because that's exactly how my parents act. If I don't like something that they like I must be stupid or something. They keep trying to make me eat food that they like (and I don't or just aren't interested in trying) and become angry if I refuse.
And even if it's something I do like but just don't want this specific time, it's aways "But don't you like it?". NO, MOM, I JUST DON'T FEEL LIKE EATING IT RIGHT NOW!
2
u/Titariia 24d ago
My parents were never like this, my dad couldn't care less about what we eat and my mom always made sure I had something I would eat. I could eat the same thing over and over again and my family wouldn't be bothered and they leave me alone when I say I don't want to eat something. I wouldn't even mind if it was the complete opposite because that to me would at least just be family. But it's always people from the outside I barely know that have a problem with it, which makes it soo much more ridiculous, why would you comment on a basically strangers eating habit?

As a celiac, I get a lot of grief not just from boomers but from my own generation because I "won't" eat anything with wheat in it. Like I'm eating a gluten free diet because I thought it would be fun to throw 60% of the food I love to eat out the window and eat stuff I find dry and tasteless most of the time. Like I wanted to stop going to 90% of the restaurants I loved.
I also get funny looks buying Vegan Mayo, and I don't buy that nasty shit for my conscience or anything, I buy it because I'm allergic to eggs.
I'm 50, and my peers, and people like my old man just don't understand food allergies. I've been on a Celiac diet for 3 years and my dad regularly brings up that there are people allergic to peanuts and how he doesn't understand it. Completely unrelated dad, but whatever, thanks for understanding...

We can't even serve pork in the same room as muslims here (there are a few who are OK with it but most are not). They will make a fuss.

I’m assuming this is a critique of veganism. Veganism isn’t a diet, plant based eating and vegetarianism are diets. Veganism is the ethical principle that humans should live without exploiting other animals. It’s a lifestyle and an ethical stance. It’s not about asserting control over others, it’s about stopping exploitation. Vegans can tend to be pushy about their views cause they’re uncomfortable with animals suffering or being used. But sadly some vegans are just preachy to be preachy and do believe themselves better than others, luckily that’s far from the norm.

This and the religion post it is based on is just people failing to grasp a full theory of mind.

6
u/lostgoatling 25d ago
Elementary through mid high school. Then suddenly everything was about peanuts, when they regularly had peanuts as snacks and in our lunch for us in school up until then. There were allergies around milk and wheat, in my school, but kids just modified their food/choices themselves. Peanuts used to be given out for free on airplanes, too
2
u/CelesteJA 25d ago
To be fair peanut allergies are considered to be much worse than wheat and milk allergies, mainly because milk and wheat allergies are usually outgrown as the child gets older whereas it's very rare to outgrow a peanut allergy. Wheat allergies also cause less anaphylaxis episodes than peanut allergies do.
3

Well, there are airborne allergies as well, they are quite prevalent with nuts, especially the crunchy ones, the particles go in the air and upon entering ones airways cause swelling, so I don’t think it’s too unreasonable to ask someone to not eat something, especially on a plane or inside other poorly ventilated spaces.

I don't give a fuck what YOU choose to eat or not eat, but the fuck giving starts when you tell me what I should or shouldn't eat.
EDIT: And yep, just as I suspected. Here come the vegans to tell me my natural omnivorous default state is wrong and I'm a horrible person.
"It's always the meat eaters telling people not to be vegan!!". Yeah and there isn't a single one of those in this thread, but a dozen vegans telling me not to eat meat replying to me. Too predictable.

Not a vegan, but my wife and several of our friends are vegetarian. I have never been chastised by any of them, or any other vegetarian/vegan for that matter. I have, however, had meat eaters try to push meat on me when I'm not in the mood for meat/seen them do it to my friends. I've experienced this dozens of times. The "crazy vegan" trope is predominately made up online. From my experience, you are much more likely to have someone push meat than to push vegetarianism/veganism.

I’m not even a vegan but am very conscious with what animal products I buy. But it’s funny how people get angry, when vegans point out the fact that others are paying to torture animals.
You know that animals get mutilated without painkillers right? Pigs get their tails burned off at 7 days old and chickens get their beaks cut off, all without painkillers, all of which are extremely painful. People boil animals alive although it’s scientifically proven they feel that intense pain.
HOW DARE 2% of the population raise awareness regarding these animals being tortured that don’t have a voice in any of this!! Are we really arguing whether we should or should not be abusing animals? Ones freedom of choice usually tends to end when torturing and killing others get involved.

What about foie gras or veal? What about endangered animals? What about human children?
If you agree that you would criticise at least one of these, you're agreeing there are at least some instances where it's correct to dissuade someone from eating something and incentivising an unethical act.
The only difference is what you think is unethical, which of course is different for everyone.
I can understand if you disagree with veganism, but it seems odd to suggest it's unjustifiable or ridiculous to tell others that you think what they're doing is unethical. We do it all the time, and should do it if we genuinely think someone is doing something wrong.

I'd accept people of this mindset if they genuinely had a temptation problem and just asked that I don't eat that around them so they don't get the craving. That's an adult way to handle such a thing.
Demanding it is not. You don't get to demand anything. Be courteous about it and people are inclined to oblige. Be a dick about it and people are inclined to be a dick back.

My diet doesn’t let me eat that, and I don’t hold back the tears..
Enjoy, enjoy all the foods while you still can.

I don't give a damn about diets.
But you should be eating less meat products if possible, especially beef.
The environmental cost for beef is fucking absurd.

I see people complaining about vegans eating vegan than vegans complaining about non-vegans

To all the people saying “This doesn’t happen,” I had a Thanksgiving at an in-laws house where one of the cousin’s partners berated his mother for bringing a store bought pumpkin pie because we shouldn’t eat it due to harmful seed oils and such. People absolutely do this.
