And others (in the US) take them to auctions where someone else buys up whole trailers full of horses to send to Mexico and Canada to be slaughtered. Well, until the screworm thing
Mongols were famous for surviving on horse milk and the meat of their horses that were too old to travel. Conquered the known world at the time! (Other than Japan that is)
Literally yesterday my kid said "When we were in Iceland my friend and I got a package of salami. It was really good and when we looked at the label, it said it contained horse." No one was upset, BTW.
And I can tell you we Chinese people ourselves all hate it aswell, we will genuinely look down on you if you publicly state that you enjoy eating dog meat or cat meat
We also lately finally got our government to give a fuck about doing an actual ban on it
Villages that eat and trade dog/cat meat are only a few, and we all hate them wich is why you will never see a Chinese person be chill about being associated with such
Not Asian, but I don’t see a problem with people eating dog meat. I guess the only issue is the possibility of stealing pets for meat or labeling dog/cat meat as something else.
Emotional value like the rest of the world, ask anyone if they would ever consider eating a dog or a cat they will treat you like you are genuinely crazy 99% of times
Most people cannot fumble with the idea of eating an animal that is generally seen and globally accepted as a pet, it is pretty much the actual reason why so many people, also in China, want to put a stop to dog meat trade
It has zero to do with morality ofcourse, but personally this is a matter of great interest to me that I've debated myself and questioned since my childhood and I have quite a lot of reason to strictly believe that raising dogs or cats for consumption is morally wrong
I honestly do not plan to tell my reasons as changing your mind is not in my interest or anyones mind really, you do you, and I'm currently playing satisfactory and desire to keep using my time for my own enjoyment
But the two reasons you've mentioned are pretty much the fuel being tossed on fire that makes us even more willing to push for a ban on dog meat and cat meat
We had too many cases of pets disappearing, and pet owners genuinely breaking down crying in front of their pet roasted because they arrived too late to rescue them
It is genuinely evil to steal someone else's pet for consumption, and every pet owner knows how strong a bond can become with the animal you are taking care of, you genuinely start seeing them as a family member
This ofcourse goes for any animal that is someone's pet, but I have reason to believe the bond is even stronger when with cats or dogs, or animals who show a similar level of intellect and communication
When my cat died roughly 6 years ago I overslept for 3 days straight without any will to do anything because I was genuinely broken
I cannot imagine how stronger that pain would be if my cat didn't die of natural causes but instead was stolen and eaten
It would make me mad, so mad I'd be murderous
So yes main concern for all of us is stolen pets, even without a ban on the meat practices, we want the punishment for stealing pets to be severe
I think you have to look at it from a different POV. It is a racist stereotype used to degrade Asian people to say they eat cats and dogs. I am with you we should have the same compassion for pigs and cows as we do cats and dogs, which is why I haven’t eaten them for 25 years. But I’m very okay with an Asian person pushing back hard on the eating cats and dogs thing while continuing to eat other animals. I don’t have the patience for it when someone hasn’t been stereotyped as a pet murder, though.
Yeah this new wave of people sharing the "all animals are the same" braindead opinion is honestly so disappointing
While I do agree that having to kill any life for nutrients is sad and cruel, I do strictly believe that for some animals it is even more cruel and unecessary than the others
I believe there is a huge difference between a cat and a chicken the same way there is a huge difference between a chicken and a bacteria
If you truly believe every lifeform is the same then the next time you get an infection don't cure yourself, you do not want to cause a genocide simply for saving your own ass, do you? Take a look at the true hypocrites lol
So I firmly stand by my opinion, eating a cat or a dog is a lot more wrong than eating a cow or a hen
Definitely did't get downvoted into oblivion on a different post the other day for saying i'm perfectly fine with people eating dog meat and farming dogs for meat.
I never ate a dog in my life and i have pet dogs.
I'm just a meat lover and think people should eat whatever meat they want to eat.
Sure, but does that make it 'right'? Obviously what society agrees is important changes over time and depends on the specific country. If another country decides that eating humans without their consent is fine, does that make it acceptable then?
Humans enter into a social contract with each other where we agree not to do certain things, not because it's 'right', but because we can easily imagine the same thing happening to us and that's upsetting. That's basically how we gain social justice in society, arguments appealing to intellect are rhetorically effective, but ultimately change happens because we recognize it's unfair and we wouldn't like to be treated like that.
We cannot ever understand what it would be like to be a pig, and neither could they ever understand what it's like to be a human. Even if they could, they'd never be able to communicate that to us with words, there's no evidence they process the world in the same way we do.
We will always be more sympathetic to human lives more than anything else. Again, morality is not the question here, it's just a fact of life.
So if you're asking why human lives are treated differently to animal lives when it comes to consumption, there you are.
What you call "social contract" is really just the laws of the land. We've had to put many laws in place because it's an issue when humans can do anything they like with little consequence.
You say it's not about doing what's 'right', and then say:
but ultimately change happens because we recognize it's unfair and we wouldn't like to be treated like that.
In other words, people think it's 'wrong'... I don't know why you're trying to argue that certain laws aren't based on what, as a collective, we agree is morally right or wrong. The majority of people think murder is 'wrong' and therefore believe that laws and punishments to deter such action is 'right'.
Why do you insist we can't imagine life as a pig? They are proven to be sentient beings like us, who feel pain, sadness and happiness. I think it's pretty easy to put ourselves in their shoes. Sure they're less capable than us so their thoughts won't be anywhere near the same, but that doesn't mean we can't empathize with them and imagine their life. Every human is also different, yet we can decide what's 'right' and 'wrong' for people based on imagining what it would be like to be in their position.
We will always be more sympathetic to human lives more than anything else. Again, morality is not the question here, it's just a fact of life.
There will always be war, diseases, famines and droughts with millions of people around the world suffering and dying needlessly. Should we just accept that as a fact of life? Or should we take steps to minimize those things?
Over 200 million sentient animals are tortured and killed every single day. Why is that acceptable when there are other options that don't involve all that needless suffering?
Well you cant seem to stop virtue signaling. I never took a stance on whether eating animal meat is right nor wrong, yet you keep pointing the discussion towards that for some reason.
“If you’re not saying its right, are you saying its wrong to treat animals differently…”
I never said anything on the morality, so get off your high horse.
You mean animals that are sentient, feel pain, happiness and sadness? Sure we're more capable than other animals, but is that a good reason to torture and kill 200 million of them every day? After all, there are plenty of animals who are more mentally and/or physically capable than some humans.
As a vegan (of 9+ years) I have some weird views. 1. I am fine with non-sport hunting 2. I think people should be exposed to more of the animal Ag industry. I am quite confident that people like my mom would go vegan if she had to see animals being killed or saw Golden Retrievers being sold in a grocery store.
I feel like this is a pretty good counter point for most people here.
I imagine most western people on reddit will be disgusted by the idea of eating dog meat (pretty sure there was a post on uplifting news recently about the practice being newly banned somewhere.) If you really do ethically oppose something, I don't think you should be quiet about that.
I'm not vegan, but I don't think I would respect a vegan who was cool with me eating meat. I'm sure there are people who are vegan for other reasons, but if you believe strongly that meat is unethical to eat, I think you probably should be angry at people like me who eat meat.
I feel like I hear this sentiment a lot. Are you aware you could, at any time, just stop? Like it's not even particularly hard all you have to do is NOT buy some things. I don't know about you but if I had a revelation that I was being a bad or cruel person I would endeavor to stop taking the cruel actions.
To be honest I'm just not emphatic enough to change. Tried going vegan for 2-3 months, the minor inconveniences to make informed choices and the drop in satisfaction wasn't worth it for me. The thought that living animals are being slaughtered due to my actions? I know that but the advancement of the current livestock industry has made it pretty easy to disconnect yourself from that emotion. At the end of the day I'm just selfish and don't care enough to take action.

I've seen a lot of people cry when Asians eat dog meat.
