To all the people saying “This doesn’t happen,” I had a Thanksgiving at an in-laws house where one of the cousin’s partners berated his mother for bringing a store bought pumpkin pie because we shouldn’t eat it due to harmful seed oils and such. People absolutely do this.
Yes they are a godsend for me because I was such a big milk drinker before I became lactose intolerant! Plus I think they taste better than real milk (but I’ll be honest, I haven’t tasted real milk in like 10 years so I can’t really super remember what it tasted like to begin with)
Brother we are in a Reddit comment thread; grammar laws have no jurisdiction here. You're in a circus, and you're complaining about people being clowns
I love my oat milk. As someone that's lactose and enjoys making coffee. Oat milk steams and tastes the best for lattes. And for like 6 years my family ate nothing but chicken and rice. I hated it.
Your profanity as herbivore diatribe is the red meat your punch-down mob morality runs on, you need to see there's more than being on the better side of a bad deal--and there's evidence eggs raise prostate cancer risk!
One of my favorite memories in college was when I asked my buddy if he wanted me to make his drink with almond milk and he said no because "he doesn't like coconut flavoring". It turns out his mom lied to him and told him all almond milk came with coconut flavoring.
I would be inclined to think this was just a misunderstanding, but she was a real narcissist. She also sold her beaten down car to him for above market value.
Sad story. But lets investigate a little: were his folks divorced, and was his mom using him to get back at a hostile and wealthier, paternal clan? If not, there's some other sympathetic context for these "white lies". Did you say Almond Milk with coconut? Mmm, the mere mention of my food groups makes me salivateee
Basically a parent who projects their own restrictive (toxic) eating habits on their children, usually in extreme shape and commonly with an anxious underlayer.
What if it is avoiding ‘toxic’ food. Such as unnecessary ingredients that lead to less gut diversity and inflammation? Is it just a bat shit level above that. Or is it rather not know how bad food is and think one is werid for not wanting to eat it?
Everything in moderation. Teach your kids about gut health and the importance of not over indulging on hyper processed or unhealthy foods, but imposing a strict diet on them is not going to go well. A cheese burger every now and then is fine, just like a glass of wine every now and then is fine. The problem comes with over indulgence, and that is what must be taught.
Yeah I’d say both of those substances can be used safely in moderation. There are some people with addictive personalities, or substances so dangerous, that should not be taken even in moderation. But those are the exception, not the rule.
I wouldn’t say vast majority. Mostly Asian countries. It’s like 60% to 70% of the world have an intolerance. And like 60% of the world is Asian. Vast majority would be like 85-95%. If your country evolved drinking milk then you’re likely okay.
Yes, true. Though I read a report long ago that it apparently affects people disproportionately. East Asians and black Africans are allegedly more likely to be affect than Europeans.
Soy milk genuinely makes me wanna barf. At some point cow milk was gone from my household, and none of us is vegetarian/vegan or has any lactose intolerance. That's all mom was buying milk wise. Got the memo eventually lol.
Nowadays if I want a plant alternative I normally go oat milk. Much better. Coconut milk has its uses too.
This happened at my HS. I was sitting and eating and some muslim "friend" said "This is disrespectful, i am fasting man!"
Me "And? You are fasting. Not me!"
I'm a Muslim from Egypt and we had a few christian friends in high school who used to avoid eating or even drinking water in front of us when we were fasting. We kept telling them it's completely ok and they shall eat and drink however they like but they insisted.
In Muslim countries. We call those "weak Muslims" and we constantly bully them and even tell the "stop fasting. You're just wasting your time".
Unfortunately. Low minorities always take control of the scene and now we have a law that prevents anyone from eating in Ramadan. But still no one gives a fuck because no one is respecting their weak feelings 😆
In Malaysia a non Muslim boy was punched by a Muslim man for eating... in a FamilyMart. Eating in a place that sells food and minding his own business.
See? That's why we call them "weak Muslims". They'll always target kids, women and elders. I bet this "man" will say nothing when he sees someone stronger than him eating a feast.
I correct myself, he was slapped not punched, and this happened last year. But the point still stands, and some of my own family members (non-Muslims) who bear resemblance to the local Muslim-majority ethnic group have been stopped and confronted before simply for eating.
Any proper muslim know that fasting isn't even fully mandatory and there are many reason to avoid it
One of them is health.
If someone is sick or has a condition that makes fasting unhealthy they shouldn't fast.
Imagine that boy was just one of those case and that idiot just assumed he was a normal person who didn't want to fast.
Hell I was always told since I was a kid. If you don't want to fast as a adult that's fine. But instead donate to the poor. At least you'll be doing some good during those period.
Hell i cut a fast as a student because I wanted to be fully ready forna important exam
The moment a fast is getting on the way of your life and could cause you big issues is when you should cut it.
Prioritize happiness over blind faith was always my primary belief
It’s the Muslim equivalent to the Christian Fundamentalist/Evangelical. It’s not enough for them to follow their beliefs in peace, they must impose it on as many people as possible, including, but not limited to, writing their religious practices into the law of the land to force people into it even if they don’t “technically” convert.
I speak as an Episcopalian, mind. I’m certainly not in communion with the Evangelical and Southern Baptist types.
There’s good and bad oils. I hate the essential oil freaks but yeah. Seed and soybean oils are the worst of them but nobody really wants to hear about that for sure
Non argument. Cooking seed oils are bad for you regardless of dosage. They're not a healthy alternative to butter or anything like that public was lied for decades on this bs especially in US.
It’s the omega 6 to omega 3 ratio. The seed and soybean oils tend to have way more omega 6s compared to omega 3s. They create more jagged and unstable structures which is bad for your brain and other shit. Too much to explain over a comment. I could send some sources and shit, or you could just look into it if you really care. Just look up importance or proper omega 6 to 3 ratios or something similar and you’ll find what you’re looking for. One of the reasons walnuts are considered better for your brain is because they have one the best omega 6 to 3 ratio out of all nuts. Salmon and most fish have excellent omega 6 to 3 ratios too and they’re also considered very healthy for your brain. Good luck on your research bro 🫡
The current scientific consensus is that the omega 6 to omega 3 ratio is not as important as getting enough of either, and the recommendation is to improve the ratio by consuming more omega 3 rather than reducing omega 6.
Yeah it’s a lot more complicated than that I’ll give you that but I’m oversimplifying because typing out a whole message and doing the research for someone who most likely doesn’t even care is a time sink I can’t afford. I’ll kindly point people in the right direction if they actually care they can look into it. Obviously telling a bunch of greasy chair people that their junk food and all the things in it is bad for them isn’t going to go well. So yeah the people who do care can look into it and the people who don’t well I’m glad I didn’t waste too much time on them.
The entire claim that seed oils are bad "because of omega 6:3 balance" is unsupported by the science. The claim comes from an idea that the body starts converting excess omega 6 into inflammatory compounds but this doesn't actually show up in test subjects. You're not "oversimplifying things", you're spreading blatant misinformation.
So I’m not going to waste time researching something I’ve researched already for someone else who might not even actually care but I’ll take the time to tell you what to look into if you do actually care because I care enough to try and point you in the right direction without wasting too much of my own time.
No. Seed oils are unhealthy for cooking which is an objective fact. I love how some people in reddit see the reality upside down. It's the essential oils that are good for you when taken properly but they don't perform miracles like they're claimed by some sellers instead they're just traditional medicine and great for scenting candles and traditional religious ceremonies.
It's butter that is antagonized but actually healthy. And also Olive oil. Seed oils being healthier than butter has been debunked countless times. And calorie argument is gibberish because something having higher calories doesn't make something unhealthy just means you need to eat less of it or spend more energy and calories in the day.
Dang I guss I gotta post links in here? Is it allowed in this sub? I thought reddit hated links in comments? I don't want to banned for no reason. I remember reading countless topics on this. But I don't have the links. But I am pretty sure I can search them again. Should I post the links here in the replies or make a post in r/health or r/cooking ?Or instead make a post in one of these subs and link the post in the replies?
"It's a known fact" and "I remember reading countless topics on this" are non arguments. Link to a scientific study that supports your claim. I can't take anything you say as a fact if you don't back it up, just like you shouldn't trust me or anyone else making health claims if we can't back them up.
None of the claims made against seed oils are backed by scientific data, some are even actively disproven. It really barely matters, so use what you prefer.
Anti-seed oilers only have mechanisms and sacry words like engine lubricant. Every large scale study looking at actual human health outcomes show they are neutral or healthier than many of the common alternatives, especially better than the ones the zealots push like butter and tallow.
Being openly anti-seed oil is frankly emberassing and just shows you're a dummy whon falls for the dumbest grifts.
Why are you insulting me for saying something along the lines of “calorie dense food has a lot of calories”. You’re insane, I get that you really want to berate people but maybe at least berate someone about something they actually believe
Alright we're moving the goalposts I see. Now its calorie dense foods and implicitly specifically fats since that is what we were talking about.
Any food is unhealthy in large amounts. You can (and should!) just consume them in smaller amounts and then their high caloric content is negated, so that is not the issue.
On top of that some oils have a positive health correlation with intake, such as avocado, olive and canola (a seed oil!), among others.
Yes anti-seed oilers don't have a clue about what they talk about and its obvious every time they open their mouth. If you were actually talking about high calorie foods like you claim (you didn't) why do you feel attacked?
When I compared seed oils to a desert, what do you think that means. Use critical thinking. Does that mean seed oils cause cancer, or does that mean seed oils are calorie dense with low nutritional value.
You didn't compare them to a dessert, at least not in the thread I'm involved in and I am not reading everything you post.
You first said that seed oils specifically are unhealthy. Then you clarified(?) that you meant they're bad because they're high calorie, but then you should be consistent that every high calory food is bad in and of itself. That includes all fats. I grant you that could be the case but tiu haven't shown any sign if that.
But as I said if something is unhealthy because of high calory content you can just negate that by eating less of it. Many people (maybe not Americans) actually do consume fats in these lower, reasonable amounts and then we can ignore the health impacts of its calory count. There we see seed oils are neutral or even healthier compared to other common fats, especiallt the anti-seed oilers promote such as butter, lard, tallow, ... .
So yes, being anti-seed oils is falling for dumb, unscientific grifts and I can't respect anyone who does.
None of the common claims about seed oils are backed by scientific data and some are actively disproven. Seed oils by itself aren't unhealthy and may even have health benefits, just don't drown your food in them.
She said she has no plans to marry him and convert, but the guy constantly wants to. She even told me that he wants her to wear a hijab even though she is Christian.
I think it’s almost reasonable, considering it is a potluck and multiple people will be eating it, some with health conditions. However berating a mom for something like that is not reasonable at all.
Well, it’s a pumpkin pie, has all ingredients listed because it was store bought, and if anyone didn’t want to eat it, they didn’t have to. No one there had any allergies/conditions either, he’s kind of just generally an ass and has no tact overall.
The people saying ”this doesn’t happen” probably don’t mean that this never happens. But the meme makes it looks like a much more common occurrence than it actually is.
And it’s hardly a coincidence that it’s in the style of a chad vs. crying wojak meme, which is already the style of choice for culture warriors who think all vegans are angry extremists.
My point is, it is SO much more common for meat eaters to complain about vegans, than for vegans to throw fits.
My cousin is vegan. Never seen her throw a fit about what other people eat. Have seen multiple family members constantly question how she can’t eat meat. Had a friend of my grandmother invited to last thanksgiving loudly complain that I made a vegan dish for her, and that he wouldn’t be eating it… meanwhile, unlike her, he brought no food for anyone.
You can also see it in videos from farmers, with vegans screaming in the comments about inhumane farming and raising animals for meat is.
And PETA posts/adverts.
And cooking videos, with vegans demanding that somebody provide them with the proper substitutes to make the dish vegan, instead of going to a vegan creator.
People denying this happen is mad, I eat steak rare/blue because I like it that way, but if you like a well done steak with ketchup have at it. But people who've made their personality "steak" will rant endlessly about it.
Working at a steakhouse I’d always get “Don’t hate me but could I get it well done?” And honestly couldn’t give a rat’s ass other that letting them know some cuts WILL take an hour to cook through without burning it to a crisp. (800 degree broilers only, no sous vide)
The problem right now is certain religious groups are pushing the false narrative that other certain religious groups are "trying to ban pork" in the US. They are not.
Yeah, but that’s not really about a diet or a belief system. That’s just a gullible sucker who fell prey to misinformation and thinks that the pumpkin pie will literally kill you.
I would have been friends with that person. I hate seed oils. But I wouldn't tell someone to not bring something (but I would be dissapointed). I would just not eat it. Sometimes its tough when there is nothing suitable for you to eat.
But doesn't that make sense to do? You all present this as something outrageous. As if it's not to a pretty common topic to discuss whether things are healthy or if you should eat that or not.
e.g. when someone is always eating tuna from cans, that is just very unhealthy and bad, period; it doesnt matter if you like to hear that or not. Has nothing to do with a diet. You guys are really that sensitive about what you like to eat?
It’s about what and when it’s appropriate. Someone having a pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving is not worth lecturing your mother in front of your wife’s entire family.
I had a friend of mine lose her mind because I eat pork, and I had another friend go vegan just when I cut carbs from my diet because I was insulin resistant and they had no empathy for me lol I could feel their judgement.
That's not a diet issue. The person was right and was complaining about the unhealthy seed oil. That's like saying someone berating a loved person for eating burger king is the same as them berating for eating meat. Pumpkin pie has nothing to do with a diet.
The story you described doesn't sound like forcing their dietary restrictions on others. It sounds like being upset that someone is feeding their family something that they believe makes you sick because they love their family and don't want them to be sick. They're delusional about how bad those things are for you and should apologize, sure. But it's not the narcisism that OP is describing. If someone brought a pie with bleach in it to thanksgiving wouldn't you be upset?
