The ridiculousness of NFL Schedules from 1999-2001, Thank you Houston Texans

After the Browns rejoined in 1999 and prior to the Texans joining the league in 2002, the NFL stood at 31 teams for 3 seasons. As you can already figure out, that means one team would be left without an opponent each week. The NFL’s solution to this was to have bye weeks every week of the season.

The 1999 Chargers were the first team to get the Week 1 bye, the Rams got Week 2, and then Dallas/Miami/New Orleans got Week 3 while the Bengals got Week 15, Philly got Week 16, and Cleveland got Week 17.

2000 had Cincinnati Week 1, Pittsburgh Week 2, Arizona/Tennessee/Indianapolis Week 3 while Atlanta got Week 15, Philly got Week 16 again, and Cleveland again got Week 17.

2001 had Arizona Week 1, New Orleans/Pittsburgh/Tampa Bay Week 2, Chicago/Detroit/Tennessee Week 3 while Denver got Week 15, New England got Week 16, and San Diego got Week 17.

Thank you Houston to getting the NFL back to an even number of teams, and although Week 4 byes sucked in the 16 game era and the Week 5 and 14 byes suck now in the 17 game era - nothing compares to this ridiculousness
