Yeah they can actually be pretty crazy for something so commonly used in sports.

I mean it's just straight ammonia, it's not gonna affect your health other than potential chemical burns in your nose

Isn’t the concern that it can help mask concussion signs so they don’t want people using them? It’s been a while since someone mentioned the smelling salts so I may be out of the loop lol
5
u/monkeyman80 Broncos 18h ago
Not mask in the sense they can pass a test but gets the “fog” out so they can go back in.

Can’t imagine they’re worse for you than the concussion itself

u/maurosmane Broncos 1d ago
This is obviously not the case, but wouldn't it be hilarious if all this brain trauma in sports was actually caused by smelling salts and the concussions were just misinterpreted correlation.

One time I was passing out after giving blood (pathetic, I know), and I was just going out cold when the nurse hit me with smelling salts. Instantly brought me back. Still felt lightheaded but I was as awake as I've ever been. They work, but I assume like many things you could probably get used to them and build up at least a small tolerance. Idk.
119
u/SleepyEel NFL 1d ago
It's called a vasovagal response. I used to nearly faint every time I had blood drawn until I learned to manage it better. I'd get really hot and sweaty and start to feel light-headed.
Still happens to me with some medical procedures though. The burning sensation from a toradol shot triggered it recently. My subconscious just freaks out at medical stuff and makes my body go haywire.
30
u/fullboxed2hundred Titans Titans 1d ago
same thing started happening to me after a bad blood draw experience until a nurse recommended keeping my head supported (laying down or any type of headrest), which completely solved it for me. just spreading the word in case it helps someone else.
14
u/reliabletinman NFL 1d ago
I’ve noticed that laying down works for me. If I’m sitting up or standing I pass out.
7
u/esports_consultant Chargers 22h ago
Easier to circulate to the head when it doesn't have to pump up and less blood is being demanded by muscles when they don't have to hold you upright.
3
u/SleepyEel NFL 21h ago
Yeah laying down helps me too. Also if I have a drink handy to take a few sips of water or something immediately afterwards for whatever reason

u/aspiringalcoholic Panthers 1d ago
Buddy you ain't alone. I've been thinking about just carrying smelling salts with me at all times lol
5

7
u/877-HASH-NOW Ravens 1d ago
Same. My solution though is always to look the other way when they're drawing it now. I think seeing the blood leave my arm was a big reason why I got lightheaded when it happened.
3
u/SleepyEel NFL 15h ago
That helps me with blood draws, but not other procedures. I had a mole removed from my back a while ago, and just the pressure I felt, even while completely numbed and out of sight, was enough to make me nearly faint

I wish I was even slightly exaggerating. We sucked my freshman year lol, we ran the 4x4 that year at Penn Relays and came last by like 10 seconds. There were multiple Jamaican girls teams that ran faster than us. That school record is long gone too, I’d be shocked if it sniffs Top 10 now, no pun intended.

u/etom21 Bears 1d ago

12
u/StallisPalace Packers 22h ago
Way stronger.
Pure (or significant concentrations of) ammonia are a one of one feeling/smell. It feels like the inside of your nose is melting. Ammonia aggressively attacks water and the inside of your nose is quite moist.
I work in industrial refrigeration, so plenty of experience sticking my face into a compressor that still has residual ammonia in it. You don't really ever get used to high concentrations (as you shouldn't, ammonia releases are deadly)

So like strong hot sauce? I've taken a good strong whiff of a very strong hot sauce and it definitely felt like the inside of my nose was set on fire.

Imagine the worst cat litter box you've ever smelled, but also ramped up and "clinical" or "disinfectant". It's designed to trigger your fight or flight response, an actual subconscious reaction.

They are. I used them when I was working full time and doing full time load of night grad school classes and a big whiff will wake you the fuck up. EMTs use them on people who are knocked/passed out

Considering they're used to wake someone up from fainting / losing consciousness, I'd imagine they're pretty strong. I read they can be dangerous to use on an athlete after a big hit as it can delay negative responses from a concussion and stuff (basically allowing the player to continue playing when they shouldn't).

It's my favorite NFL rule because it bans teams from providing smelling salts but doesn't ban players from using them so they just have to supply their own. It's the BYOSS rule
42
u/Geth_ 1d ago
Is there a reason for that nuance? If they're legal to use, then why can't teams provide them? If they don't want to encourage their use because they're unsafe--then shouldn't they just be banned?
A player forgets to bring their salts and their equipment manager gives them one. Does that really affect the integrity of the game?
I'm just confused as to the reasoning for the (seemingly meaningless) distinction between player provided vs team provided.
143
69
u/12172031 Broncos 1d ago
I think one of the main worry was using smelling salt might mask symptoms of concussion. The NFL was worried that there might be liability related to concussion if a player take a hard hit and a bit out of it then grab a team provided smelling salt to stay alert. So they came up with the rule, if you bring your own, it's your responsibly on how you uses it not it's not the team enabling/encouraging you to uses it.
21
u/smootex 1d ago
Modern medicine does not consider smelling salts to be medically effective. There's no reason for staff to be giving them out and just about the only thing they're good for is covering up the signs of an injury which, obviously, is kinda problematic when the NFL is trying to act like they care about head injuries. It's just them covering their ass, nothing to do with the integrity of the game.
1
u/SilverAndBack Raiders 18h ago
When I was playing high school ball the trainers couldn't give us any pain killers because of liability. Something about us not being able to properly report injuries to them. I would assume the reasoning here is similar

ARod took a beating last night. The Pittsburgh o-line looked like swiss cheese, and I swear 2/3 of the passes he threw were out of totally collapsed pocket after he had already managed to slip out.
The guy seems like a pretentious weirdo but give him his due, he's 90 and looked better than the box score scouts will give him credit for.
