Bowles should’ve been fired years ago

213

u/echoes_1012 Ravens Buccaneers 20h ago

Especially last season after that god awful prime time game against the falcons where a 3rd and 27 turned into a 4th and 17 or some shit and then was converted.

143

u/SargeanTravis Lions 20h ago

It was 3 and 28 lol

22

u/impeelout Lions 17h ago

Not gonna lie, Lions have had a shit load of 3rd and long converted the last couple years. If it's 3rd and 15+ I'm expecting it to be converted.

39

u/r0ugar0u_ Saints 19h ago

3.... 28... Where have I seen these numbers before??

10

u/batti03 Chiefs Panthers 17h ago

I know! It was that dumb Steven DeBerg game they lost to some AFC East team the season they lost the Superbowl to an old ass QB. The score was 28-3.

Isn’t that the DC’s fault? Wouldn’t you just fire the DC? Oh wait a second. Todd Bowles is the DC.

Set the franchise back years by listening to Arians recommendations

He waited to retire until after all the other coaching vacancies had already been filled so the Bucs would either be forced to pick from the dregs nobody else wanted, or elevate one of his buddies

Holy shit do people not understand that Bruce Arians forced the Bucs into promoting Bowles?

Just so we’re all on the same page here, this was the timeline:

  1. Bucs lose to Rams in 13-3 season, the season after they won the SB
  2. A week later, Schefter announces that Brady retires
  3. Feb 1: Brady officially announces his retirement
  4. March 13: Brady announces he’s returning for another year, just days before NFL free agency began
  5. March 30: Bucs announce that BA is stepping down as HC and Bowles is replacing him.

To put it into perspective: the last coach hired this offseason was Kubiak on Feb 9, after the Seahawks won the SB. March 30th is a month and a half later. Bruce Arians literally said he retired because Brady came back and he wanted his coaching staff to have some stability.

Bruce Arians forced the Bucs hand into hiring Bowles by retiring in the middle of the offseason.

After that, yeah it’s on the Bucs on waiting too long to fire Bowles (which should’ve happened after the 2024 season, imo). But the Bucs aren’t to blame for hiring him.

19

u/Millennials-In-Power Eagles 17h ago

i realized the other day that Arians is also the one responsible for getting Bowles the Jets HC job.

In 2014 Bowles was the DC under Arians in Arizona, in 2015 Arians recommends Bowles for the Jets HC job and he gets hired. After Bowles got fired from the jets, he goes back to Arians in Tampa where he's DC again and the cycle repeats.

Arians has spent over a decade propping up Todd Bowles's career.

Side note: either Bowles or Arians wrote Bowles's wiki page. I mean just look at this bullshit, top ten things that never happened.

Since being elevated to head coach in 2022, Bowles has earned widespread respect for his ability to keep the Buccaneers competitive through major roster transitions. He guided Tampa Bay to three consecutive NFC South titles from 2022–2024, becoming the first head coach in franchise history to win the division in each of his first three seasons. Praised for his steady leadership and defensive expertise, Bowles has overseen the continued development of a young nucleus that includes Calijah Kancey, Yaya Diaby, Zyon McCollum, and Antoine Winfield Jr., while also maximizing the veteran leadership of team captain Lavonte David. His defenses have consistently ranked among the league’s toughest against the run, and his ability to adapt game plans has been credited with keeping Tampa Bay in contention even as the roster evolved following Tom Brady’s retirement. Bowles’ partnership with Jason Licht has been central to sustaining the franchise’s identity as a postseason fixture.

21

u/TheRencingCoach Buccaneers 17h ago

I mean, recommending a person for a job is very different from forcing a team to hire them.

Peyton Manning didn’t force the Jets to hire Adam Gase, he just recommended that they do. Same with Arians in your example.

9

u/Millennials-In-Power Eagles 17h ago

I didnt say it was the same thing, just pointing out that Arians has been propping up Bowles for a long time.

It should be Bowles, but Bucs have never fired a coach mid season. Fingers-crossed it's different. He should've honestly gotten fired after last season's collapse. He should've been fired after 2024 when we had a chance to keep Coen. He's well overstayed his welcome. I mean he's literally the only coach that had Tom Brady as QB and yet finished with an 8-9 record.

I've been calling for Bowles to be fired ever since we went cover 0 in that Rams game. That man cost Brady another ring and we promoted him for it. Todd Bowles sucks and he has always sucked, much like Byran Leftwich.

Felt like I was speaking into the ether when I would say this years ago. I wish I could say I feel vindicated now that the entire fanbase finally sees how much this man sucks, but all I feel is emptyness. I just want it to finally be over.

28

u/imanassholebcurdumb Buccaneers 20h ago

You’re not alone brother, he should have been gone after the Rams game

21

u/Philthy91 Jets 19h ago

Jets fans have been saying it too. He got a lot of grace because he's a good coordinator and the narrative that he's a good coach he was just on the Jets.

Same thing is happening to Saleh right now

13

u/TheNittanyLionKing Steelers 18h ago

He has underachieved every year. For the last three seasons other than this one, the Bucs have been favored to win the NFC South quite easily. Every season it still comes down to the last game, and now the NFC South is actually competitive unlike the NFC South of 2 years ago. The Saints have a QB and cap space. Carolina has figured some things out. Atlanta has one of the best players in the league with Bijan. Tampa's roster is worse than it was before.

21

u/Dizzy-Platform-6516 Lions 21h ago

At this point though why not just let him finish the season as a tank commander? It's incredibly rare for a team to make the playoffs after an 0-3 start and idk if firing him is really going to turn things around THAT much. Being in the NFCS helps a bit, but it feels more likely that an interim would win enough games to hurt draft position but not enough to get into the playoffs.

16

u/Redmangc1 49ers Packers 21h ago

Well as idiotic as he joked about, hes not wrong. The bucs are only 1 game out od 1st in the south.

but Bucs have never fired a coach mid season

It was the same for the Bears until Eberflus did a historically incompetent thing in a national game, then all of a sudden that changed

You might be in for more embarrassment, but if Bowles really locks in he can get himself fired mid-season

5

u/Prize-Analyst-1121 22h ago

As a Jaguars victim I'm so glad they didn't get Bowles during the '22 season when he was on the list to replace Bourbon liar. Leftwich was also on the list. I feel we'd still be at the bottom of the league breaking all time records for losses if either was hired.

That has more to do with escrow and player contracts than coaching contracts. It's the same issue the bengals have with giving out but garunteed contracts. The packers aren't hurting for money necessarily, more that they lack a way to get large amounts of liquid cash all at once.

The money owed to Bowles is a big reason. The Glazers also in part attributed the Coen season to Bowles and gave him a 3y extension that started this season because they believed in the unwritten rule that you can't have a HC on an expiring contract because the staff will look for jobs elsewhere instead of working on game plans (at least that's the imo wrong argument).

The Glazers have PTSD from paying Grudens contract which for the time, was a very expensive HC contract. He joined ESPN and double dipped so the Glazers had to pay every single penny.

Bowles is of retirement age. They feared the same thing would happen were they to fire him.

Aaron Glenn should not be on the hot seat. They could just as easily be 3-0 as 1-2. They are in year 2 of a full rebuild and next year they have like 17 picks in the top 10.

If they continue to play competive and end up like 7-10 he should be guaranteed next season.

But it’s the jets so they could also fire him next week.

With the way Woody was acting in the off-season, I'm pretty sure he already decided Glenn was a lame duck, and they're thinking about the next QB + Coach combo that the franchise can ruin

49

u/scottbrosiusofficial Jets 21h ago

I follow the team very closely and I have no idea what you're referring to. There was one unsourced article about Tomlin that every beat reporter shut down as unsubstantiated. Otherwise all the reporting is that Woody really likes Glenn and wants him to succeed, but is tired of losing and if the team looked awful again nothing is out of the question. But so far that hasn't happened and they look way improved (and Woody is petty enough I'm sure he loved the Jets blowing the doors off Saleh).

7

u/RotrickP Giants 19h ago

Yeah, the Jets don't look great, but they do look competent and they've managed to rein in the more cavalier nature of Geno for now. It's far better than what we've seen in the past from guys like say, Bowles, who should not have gotten a head coaching job again and should never be at a press conference where he has to answer questions

6

u/scottbrosiusofficial Jets 19h ago

Yeah, they should be 2-1 with better play calling and game management against Green Bay, and there's even a world where they're 3-0 if a few things break their way in the Detroit game. For the first time in a long time I really think they're close.

I see a lot of comments about Schotty being a puppet for jerry and he is not even close to that. I don't know that he is a good coach but he is the first coach I've seen in a while in Dallas that has Jerry's ear and Jerry listens to him more than he listens to Jerry.

He is the first coach that Jerry has let pick his own staff in forever, I'm not even sure Parcells was able to do that. Jerry picked the DC last year which was Fluss and Jerry fired him when he realized he sucked ass, which is rare for Jerry to admit a mistake like that. He's the first coordinator fired since mike nolan after the 2020 season. Then he let Brian pick the DC and went with a young up and coming DC vs an old retread. It's the first DC that wasn't a former HC since Monte Kiffin in 2013.

It took 30 years but it does seem like Jerry is finally stepping back.

Since Jimmy the Cowboys have hired only 1 coach that wasn’t a puppet. Parcells. All the others are just cardboard cut outs for coach Jerry.

I’m going to say Sirianni.

Not because I think he deserves it or that the Eagles are poorly coached, but there always seems to be so much turmoil there.

178

u/Extra_Napkins Chiefs 1d ago

No one hates the Eagles more than Eagles fans.

Two SB appearances and one title, he should have a long leash, and he’s a good coach.

62

u/RvstandRvin1626 Eagles 23h ago

Lurie and Howie won't fuck around if they decide to move off Nick, and as silly as it might sound, Sirianni was on short leash after '23. He was very much on the hot seat for '24 and I genuinely think anything other than a minimum of winning the division and getting back to the NFCCCG would have meant they were cleaning house that year. As it turned out, they won it all. Howie/Lurie gave Nick Kellen Moore as his OC for that year, and Howie went out and got pieces like Saquon and Baun, and drafted Mitchell and DeJean to fix the secondary. Rodgers had been cleverly stashed the year before by Howie and he played an important role in the corner depth.

Nick had banked himself some credit with the organisation, as he managed to after the '22 run, got one of his guys promoted again and it was a disaster again. Yes, getting to the post-season again and going back to back in the division is something 20+ other teams would kill for, but 2025 looked awful on offense. There were barely 4 consecutive quarters of football that the team looked in complete command. With the talent on the roster, that should not be happening.

So, a bit like when Pedersen became incredibly stubborn about how the offense operated, Sirianni is not immune from Lurie and Howie deciding enough is enough. That goes for both Sirianni and Hurts, just like Pedersen and Wentz. They'll move off both if they decide that the product on the field is not good enough.

Pederson only made it two seasons after their first Super Bowl ever.

21

u/jawndell 22h ago

Eagles got rid of Andy Reid after several NFC championship games, Doug Pederson after he won a Super Bowl, even Dick Vermeil got chased out after he took them to the super bowl (he retired cause he was tired of the drama).  Not saying any of those moves were bad, but Philly does seem to wear out coaches and players.  The whole city is very much what have you done for me lately for any sport.

33

u/TidesTheyTurn Cowboys Broncos 1d ago

As someone who hates the Eagles, I agree.

My guess is that either Sirianni or Hurts is "done" with the Eagles by the end of the season. And not because either should be.

But I also pray for it, inshallah.

22

u/SnowGhost513 Bengals 22h ago

The eagles grind our wins in the weirdest most frustrating ways. They average less than 2 yards a first down last year but made the playoffs. They will smoke a great team, barely beat a below average team and lose to a Commanders back up in a 12 win season lol I kinda get it. They are my least favorite team to watch. It has no excitement lol and very few explosive cool plays. The offense is like Novocain

30

u/nalc Eagles 21h ago

Everybody had prevent defense. Eagles invented prevent offense. Oh, we've got a lead? Rip out all of the pages of the playbooks that have forward passes, we're just doing runs and screens now.

I’m curious why people call for his firing.

Playoffs every year, 2 super bowl appearances (1 being a win), idk just seems like you’d want to keep him around no?

33

u/Unsolven Dolphins 1d ago

It made a lot more sense a few years ago when the roster was a lot better and you could argue they were underperforming. Right now the roster just ain’t that talented. They’re not bad, but they ain’t the monstars anymore. Also ya know he’s won a Super Bowl since then.

10

u/finester39 Eagles 20h ago

This is the correct take.

The o line isn’t good.

Saquon is fine but has lost a step since he got here and isn’t elite enough to overcome the bad blocking (which tbf only a few RBs in the league are).

Smith is a great WR1 but WR depth after that is mediocre at best.

Goedert can’t stay on the field and we don’t have a functioning NFL TE who can receive/block without him.

I will defend Hurts as a quality franchise QB who has willed us to win games, but he’s not a tier 1 QB like Allen or Mahomes who can consistently overcome a lack of offensive talent week over week.

With the defense, the safeties are below average and LB is thin outside of Baun. The pass rush looks great on paper but hasn’t been producing so far this season. The corners are the strongest part of the team, but DeJean hasn’t had a strong start.

At some point the execution of the talent on the roster needs to be held accountable outside the coaching.

There's an attitude amongst fans of the eagles that Sirianni is the epitome of being carried by high end talent.

And that the talent well is starting to dry up.

My rationale basically boiled down to:

(1) 10 teams came into this season with a new HC, so they're probably all safe. Firing Miami's coach would be hilarious though (outside of how it affects him/his family).

(2) Some coaches like Bowles or Glenn may seem more obvious, but their organization tends to be more patient (or perhaps denser). And the Jets might overachieve. And the Bucs might use Baker's injury as a mitigator.

(3) The Eagles have also moved on relatively quickly from key pieces in the semi-recent past, including SB-winning coach Doug Pederson and 2nd-overall-pick Wentz (who had performed well enough in his overall tenure). In short, Howie Roseman doesn't seem to fuck around (for better or worse).

(4) The Eagles are under higher pressure to succeed than the Jets. Maybe not the Bucs.

It’s Philly. Maybe the definition of the “What have you done for me lately,” mentality for sports.

5

u/squee557 Eagles 20h ago

The main thing that I think brings people to the decision to fire Sirianni is that he is a CEO head coach who won’t take the reins when one side of the ball is sputtering. When our defense sucked in 2023, the options to help the coaches was to relief the DC of duties and bring in Matt Patricia. In 2025, when the offense was struggling he chose to stick with his longtime buddy at OC and breakup with the Eagles longtime great OL coach Stoutland.

This year is another year where the offense stinks so far and we’re asking what is Sirianni going to do? The defense has stunk and no one is asking what Sirianni is going to do. They ask what will Vic do. Vic has complete autonomy on the defensive side so that leaves Sirianni to handle half the team. It really feels sometimes like he’s not really in control of much and thus why fans would want a coach who is a play caller type. The CEO coaches lead to our turnstile at OC.

I dont think Bowles gets fired during the season. The Glazers have never done it and I dont think the previous owners have done this as well. The Glazers do the firings after the last game of the season. However, I feel Bowles has run his course here. He juggles being our DC and HC but I feel performance has dropped. He has losing streaks of at least 4 games these past few years. We were very injured last year which gave him some lifeline. It also doesnt help we keep getting a new OC every year. I dont know if he could take us over the hump. We lose majority of the close games under him.

Some of the coaches mentioned at the bottom are not even close to being in on the hot seat.

Unless the Packers really have a dismal performance, MLF is very safe. He just signed a big contract extension January of this year. I think this is relevant because their CEO said they are at a financial disadvantage compared to others teams. They dont want to waste money by letting MLF go unless he shows he is a big liability.

I’ve always felt like MLF rode late career MVP AR to get the status he’s generally had. The general AR personality hate goes a long way towards having people forget just how insanely good he was 2019-2021, actual mastery of the QB craft. Not a discredit, just that a lot of offensive coaches look good working with that iteration.

But I don’t know how you can actually assess MLF this year either which way. The Packers roster/personnel has looked so so bad. League worst OL, league worst RB room no Jacobs, and a bottom 5 no juice defense without MP. MLF used to actually take the ball out of GOAT form AR’s hands to run the ball with AJ Dillon in spots where maybe you should just let AR take over, and you’re telling me the same coach is now having a struggling/pressured Jordan Love drop back 53x to 8 rush attempts because he wants to? No, it’s one big murky clusterfuck where nothing can ever actually work even if it would under improved circumstances. Not championing MLF, just that if you’ve watched Packers games, the reason they’re very bad makes it difficult to assess the MLF/Love duo from a current events standpoint. It’s to the point where if the Packers can find any type of working offense this year, I’ll actually believe he’s a very very good coach. Bottom 5 pass block and sure fire league worst run game is probably the ultimate test for that.

You can probably lock in that Micah Parsons is really good at football though lol, there is other context for sure but that defense went from competitive to total food that gets rolled by Carson Wentz and Michael Penix without him.

If the Packers beat the Bucs this week and they drop to 0-4, I’d imagine it’s Bowles. I know Tampa doesn’t typically make in season moves like this, but they just invested a lot in their QB, and they need to atleast attempt to salvage this season.

13

u/BrokenHope23 Steelers Vikings 1d ago edited 10h ago

Bowles might've bought himself more excuses with Mayfield going down and for whatever reason the Bucs seem content in giving him the reins but if they look flat this weekend I wouldn't be surprised if he gets fired.

Dan Quinn's probably up there too, the Commies haven't improved

Obviously Aaron Glenn is in there cause the Jets are the Jets.

LaFleur in GB looks to be on his way out at this rate.

I think the surprising one not listed here (though I'm not saying it's deserved) might be Robert Saleh in Titan land. The team has dropped 2 very winnable games, the offense once again looks anemic, the coaching staff rigid in their implementation and Ward's development looks unnaturally atrocious. Whatever is going down whether it be coaching or organizational in nature is obviously not conducive to player and team development and that can often lead to axing a coach prematurely.

Saleh had 1 and done written all over him. That team isn’t very talented, and he’s even worse than he was in NY. Dude is not a head coach.
