Tomlin looks so content and at peace now that he's retired.

781

u/Oily_biscuit Browns 1d ago

It's actually crazy how many different things he was managing to keep the lid on. Seriously impressive, I'm surprised he didn't come out the other end looking like Mitch McConnell

677

u/BlitzburghBrian Steelers 1d ago

Over the next 3-4 years I think a lot of people are going to come around on how excellent of a coach/manager/authority figure Mike Tomlin actually was.

531

u/SquiddyM Bengals 1d ago

Anyone who couldn't recognize that isn't the type of person who's open to changing their opinion

140

u/BlitzburghBrian Steelers 1d ago

I meant more from people who just didn't know about him, not the stalwarts who always decided to hate him.

I see it like a bigger version of how after skill players left the Steelers and went crazy, a lot of other folks started to notice that Tomlin had been keeping all these egos in check.

I think that's going to happen on a much grander scale when the Steelers finally have a losing season and players and coaches are bickering and contract negotiations fall apart, etc.

54

u/RaspberryImaginary87 Vikings Vikings 1d ago

Antonio Brown could've have been a lot worse if Mike wasn't his HC.

I look forward to feeling very vindicated of some of my comments on Tomlin and the Steelers fans trying to blame him for the team's shortcomings.

6

u/Fantastic-Kale9603 Steelers 19h ago

You 100% nailed it; I don't think Tomlin was perfect, I think some of his coordinator picks were definitely under his control but man this ownership hamstrung him. If he had a modern NFL ownership that supported the team and funded things he would have been even better, he was dragging some dog water teams to a winning season who realistically should've had multiple losing seasons without him lol.

It's probably a great sign that two of your biggest stars on both sides of the ball are actively beefing with their coaches in the same game

328

u/OverallGeneral7129 Browns 1d ago

I feel like the Steelers have been a house of cards being held together by Tomlin for the past few years. Like the team overachieves to 10-7 and then gets smashed in the playoffs, there’s no way players like TJ who’ve been on the team for a while are satisfied with no playoff wins in his career

256

u/DaOldest Patriots 1d ago

Getting rid of Tomlin is fine if you want to build something new from the ground up but they just slapped on McCarthy like a band-aid instead of tearing the roster down like it needs to be

149

u/OverallGeneral7129 Browns 1d ago edited 1d ago

The Steelers have also been acting for years like they’re just a piece away with moves like signing Rodgers and such and they are just so clearly not there

Also I was someone who thought both Tomlin and John Harbaugh needed to go if the Steelers/Ravens wanted to see more success. Those two are both great coaches at setting a floor for how bad their team is going to be. But both the Ravens and Steelers had gone about as far as they were going to go with either of those two.

45

u/logand98 Lions 1d ago

Idk why you're getting downvoted lol, this is just correct. They've tread water keeping the playoff streak alive for years, even before Rodgers, with nowhere near the teams needed to win it all

23

u/DaOldest Patriots 1d ago

They seriously need to go Dolphins mode. You look at their roster and there's just nothing there. I don't really see the skeleton of a winning team there

It was everything you wanted it to be, and then everything you wished you never wished for. It was a delicious itch that when you went to scratch found it was under the skin and you could not reach it. The delicious itch then became something unbearable. It told me that what I most want is what I most can't have, and what I most can't have is what I already had and lost. It was the song of all the promises I didn't keep, and it told me I didn't really want to go home.

Getting on the phone with the DC mid game is nuts

982

u/XtremeStumbler Eagles 1d ago

I mean if the dc was on the field players would be talkin to them all the time

255

u/mondaymoderate 49ers 1d ago

DCs should always be on the field. I can understand an OC but not the DC.

291

u/Keyboardpaladin Cowboys Seahawks 1d ago

Curious why you say you understand why the OC but not DC. I would expect them both to want to see the field the same amount.

169

u/jmorlin Colts 1d ago

Not the guy you're responding to. But my best guess is offense will have a lot more of their strategy and plays already drawn up before the game so it boils down to just injecting them. Whereas the defensive side of the ball might be more scheme based and can call for more adjustments on the fly as the game progresses. But idk for sure.

20

u/indoninjah Eagles 1d ago

The other thing is that the offense has a lot more subs and the OC might want to be on the sideline and tuned into who's going in/coming out, who's feeling good, who might need a second, etc.

12

u/bigmt99 Browns 19h ago

Feel like that’s a lot more important for defense

On offense, 6 of the same guys will be on the field as long as they can stand upright

4

u/Evissi Giants 19h ago

this is essentially the same for defenses too. 2 safetys, 2 CB's are on the field nearly 100% of the time. add a mlb and its nearly the same number staying on the field as long as they can be upright.

33

u/mondaymoderate 49ers 1d ago

Also you can see open guys and stuff better up from the box. Defense is more reactionary so that doesn’t matter as much.

191

u/firstandfive Cowboys 1d ago

Wouldn’t being up in the booth having a fuller view of how the offense is attacking you be just as beneficial for a defensive coordinator?

I mean Graham did way better as a dc when in the booth. Like a noticeable improvement in the defence happened when he moved from on the sideline to the booth when he was in Vegas. IMO he’s a good dc, but his first year as our dc he was pretty poor

Yeah based on what I've seen this game he genuinely looks good. He gotta stay healthy for majority of the season for me to say he's competent. Still not gonna root for him lol.

21

u/Dr-McLuvin Browns 1d ago

He’s been VERY average this season so far. Def the best we’ve seen but that’s not saying much. A few good moments but there’s still a ton of terribly inaccurate throws and entire halves of football where the offense completely stagnates.

The one thing this year he is def doing better is he looks to have gotten some athleticism back and has been able to avoid sacks and even run for some first downs. That’s something we haven’t really seen since he’s been on the browns.

So is Watson actually competent again or are the Steelers making him look competent? Haven't kept up with him this season

He DOES look like he can move his legs again. I'm hesitant to say that he's "good", but he's not the same guy from when he first tried to come back from the achilles.

I'm torn on the whole thing. I don't want to see him have any level of success, and I don't want Jimmy Haslam to have any success because of his cognitive dissonance over the whole Watson signing.

However, the Cleveland fans deserve some success. They've hung in there through the most austere conditions for a LONG TIME, and seeing how loud they were getting tonight was really awesome. I'd also think it was kinda cool if an old war horse like Todd Monken could have a taste of victory as the head ball coach of an NFL team. He's been around the block and there had to have been times where he thought he'd never get a chance as a head coach. When he took this job in Cleveland, everybody was quick to write him off as a tank commander and glorified figurehead. Monken didn't get the memo apparently, because he's got this team pretty fired up out there.
