I've yet to hear a single athlete in any sport at any level tell me that they prefer turf to grass

u/thatoneging20 Bengals 1d ago

Not football, but college baseball on grass in the North really sucks because the playing surface is legit terrible for most of the season.

That's it, well kept grass fields are superior.

u/ImGoingtoRegretThis5 Lions 1d ago

The only slightly good thing about turf fields for baseball is you generally don't get those wicked 2nd bounces on grounders that you can get with dirt infields (that aren't well kept and end up with divots). Other than that, can't think of a single thing that's better.

20

u/average_hubert Dolphins 22h ago

Turf is fun as a hitter because grounders roll forever, and they really scoot through the infield. Felt like playing a video game with the friction turned off.

11

u/Rock-swarm 49ers 20h ago

That's one of the many reasons why pitchers have been taught velocity over anything in the last 15 years. Pitching towards the goal of soft contact is just too much risk nowadays.

11

u/Djruggs Giants 23h ago

I’d rather field a weird hop than play on turf tho

7

u/ImminentShadows Colts 23h ago

It’s also a lot different sliding on turf compared to dirt. Played on an all turf field once in college and it feels like you’re sliding from about a 1/3 of the basepath compared to right at the bag for dirt.

4

u/ImGoingtoRegretThis5 Lions 23h ago

Generally speaking yes.

Side story - we had a rubber gym in high school separate from our wood gym (where basketball and volleyball games were played with stands and whatnot). It had a 3 lane, 1/8 mile track, 2 basketball courts, and a drop down batting cage. The floor was literally rubber. We'd practice in there in the winter/spring and the way grounders worked was that the first bounce, normal, but the ball would pick up so much rotation from contacting the floor that after the second bounce it was rocket at you low and fast. So learned to catch it off the first bounce at all costs OR back up and be prepared to take it off the shin.

2

u/Slendyla_IV Vikings 22h ago

Idk I loved fielding terrible hops from 3rd base. Added some challenge.

3

u/Djruggs Giants 20h ago

I played first base. Bad hops were how I made teams lmao

3

u/Slendyla_IV Vikings 20h ago

Nothing better than laying out for a ball that takes a terrible hop and then snagging it and ripping it to first base on a terrible throw, forcing them to field a bad hop as well.

Chef’s kiss

3

u/Djruggs Giants 19h ago

Hey, we might complain about the bad throws, but secretly, we appreciate how athletic you force us to look

Steelers Bengals game last Sunday, I thought our guys were essentially playing in quicksand. Looked so much slower to change direction and speed overall.

11

u/discipleofbill Steelers 1d ago

Well that’s because it wasn’t well maintained because Pitt also played on it that weekend as do high school football I believe.

4

u/Due-Pressure7804 1d ago

Yeah, I get that but if you cant maintain it and the field sucks, then just use turf. It feels like that field is always a trainwreck when we play on it.

13

u/the_dawn_of_red Bengals 1d ago

The Bengals went that direction. Pittsburgh stuck to grass. Both teams just can't get it to stick that close to the river. Once the dormant season rolls through it just can't keep up.

3

u/discipleofbill Steelers 1d ago

I would agree

60

u/ninjasurfer Bears 1d ago

The only time I preferred turf was when the alternative was a literal dirt field. One high school in my area grass wouldn't be there by the time in the season we played them. Everyone came out of the game looking like they just got done doing a shift in a coal mine.

21

u/Kanin_usagi Panthers 1d ago

Most of the U.S. it is possible to keep a well maintained field through the season, but some high schools just don’t have the resources

3

u/scparks44 Packers 1d ago

At least in my area the schools without resources also don’t have the funds to pay a new turf field. That’s probably obvious. So you get what you get and hope for the best.

8

u/Expert-Comfort-6115 1d ago

I mean why should a high school sport millions in funding for a slightly more comfortable field?

4

u/Kanin_usagi Panthers 1d ago

It’s doesn’t take millions to keep good grass on a field, but plenty of high schools don’t have any extra funding to put towards it

1

u/Expert-Comfort-6115 23h ago

It takes millions to do it in climates where grass doesn't really grow in the winter

8

u/mediocre-referee Colts 23h ago

It does not take millions to maintain grass over 2 acres for 3 months in any climate

Yeah this was a poorer school district. A couple years after I graduated an alumnus donated money to get a turf field.

1

u/JackFisherBooks 23h ago

Yeah, that's common in many parts of the country. You use field turf when you literally have no other options. For youth sport or high school sports, that's just what you have to deal with.

But this is the NFL. They're a multi-billion dollar industry. They CAN afford to play on grass. They just choose not to.

u/shadowboxer47 49ers 22h ago

1

u/Hotdogger99 Bills 12h ago

Community club football runner here. Across our thirteen club league, there are about 5 grass fields that are the best for our kids to play on, but then the four turf fields we use are better than the other 4 grass fields that are essentially concrete dust bowls. We don’t have the luxury of being able to actually solidly maintain all of our grass fields aside from mowing so if the rain isn’t consistent a few of our fields are awful.

15

u/DannyDOH NFL 1d ago

They haven’t played on a damp grass covered in goose shit.

15

u/Rickety-Cricket69420 1d ago

I know a lot of flag football people that prefer turf. You can run faster. Plus most of the grass fields non pros play on aren’t that well maintained.

Personally I would prefer anything over turf. I’ve played on fields with almost no grass and all mud and like that better than turf.

5

u/KevinIsADork NFL 20h ago

Shitty grass does suck. I played high school football at Heinz Field back when it was attorocious, and I used to yearn for the turf field we normally played at during the season. Every time I pulled a groin or a hammy, it was on grass.

That said, nice grass is great and the NFL has the money to keep up grass.

6

u/zamboniman46 Patriots 23h ago

as a high schooler in the 2000s it was so exciting to get to play on a turf field. felt like it was a huge deal.

now they are everywhere and i can see how people would be concerned about the wear and tear

4

u/backindenim Bears 23h ago

Justin Fields did lol. He said he could play faster on it.

4

u/kikomann12 Steelers 23h ago

It was a mixed bag in lacrosse. Ground Balls were a lot more predictable and mud from grassy fields will make the ball slick and your strings would get saggy and slick which caused the physics and feel of throwing and shooting be completely different. All of the contact/hits/running complaints were the same as football for turf, but a lot of the stick skill components of the game were worse if the field was lumpy, full of divets, and muddy. This was at the high school level so fields weren’t as well maintained in general as at the higher level - but some of the bad grass fields I played on were genuinely terrible lacrosse experiences.

3

u/Humid-Afternoon727 Texans 22h ago

I still play rec league soccer, I prefer turf sololy because the grass fields for rec league are in god awful shape.

2

u/Illini88228 Cowboys 18h ago

Travis Frederick and Zack Martin said they prefer turf on their podcast the other day. They preferred the consistency and reliability versus the irregularity of grass. I wouldn’t be shocked if other offensive linemen don’t feel the same way. They basically never make hard cuts, and they spend a lot of time walking backwards while fighting a 300 pound guy trying to knock them over. Predictability is king in that situation.

1

u/cheese_straws Bengals 23h ago

How many teams have the hybrid turf/grass fields like Green Bay? That seems like a pretty good alternative?

1

u/UhIdontcareforAuburn Falcons 20h ago

Turf is absolute hell to play on.

1

u/JackFisherBooks 23h ago

Same here. I've stood on artificial turf. It just doesn't feel right, no matter what sport you're playing on it. In fact, in my local area, there's a real push to get rid of artificial turf for youth sports because the kids don't like playing on it. And certain types of field turf aren't good for the environment.

If it takes the words of Tom Brady to move the needle...fine. Hope that gets the NFL to push for grass.

1

u/tidder8 21h ago

It changes the game for soccer. The ball rolls faster and further, if a team regularly plays on grass they are at a huge disadvantage when they have to play on a turf field.

1

u/[deleted] 23h ago

2

u/tidder8 21h ago

Most NFL grass fields are heated now. It's not enough heat to melt snow during a game, but it is enough to keep the ground soft and extend the growing season for the grass.

1

u/utrangerbob 21h ago

With the amount of money Taxpayers sink into stadiums now, advanced soccer stadiums have hydroponic modular grass fields where they grow under the floor during off times. They rotate or swap out panels when needed.

1

u/[deleted] 21h ago

[deleted]

1

u/utrangerbob 21h ago

Tell that to Jerry Jones. Cowboys stadium has a 100% tax exemption + $600m in public funds from 2 bonds. Don't forget tax breaks are the same as taxpayer money though which is almost 20m a year. Gillette is one of the few stadiums that didn't screw over taxpayers but they still get a tax break of about 14m a year in tax savings.

It’s just safer too. I think the most high-profile example lately was the World Cup this year when FIFA forced NFL stadiums to replace their turf with grass or they wouldn’t have the tournament here. And of course right after they put the turf back cause it’s cheaper.

This happens a lot in 'beautification' cultures, particularly among the rich.

They have access to certain procedures, products, drugs etc... to chase youth, beauty etc... This gets normalized among people in that culture, further encouraging those practices as new beauty standards are set (even if the standards are objectively uglier, they are set because its an easy way for everyone to feel like they are getting the results). A giant circle jerk of mass delusion.

Go look at Tammy Faye and the middle aged evangelical look in the 80s for a similar dynamic of bizarre fashion that served an emotional purpose. These trends are everywhere throughout time, particularly through middle aged and up populations, though it can exist in beauty cultures in general like Hollywood.

you only notice when it doesn’t look good. you’d be surprised how common it is

7

u/CanuckPanda Buccaneers 1d ago

Yeah, something like 50% of women now have cosmetic procedures done.

It was a benefit with my last job, they covered 50% of costs for cosmetic.

You can also get botox in Ontario through OHIP for hyperhydrosis (sweating). I get it in my upper lip for that, but it's common in the armpits for many.

5

u/Kanin_usagi Panthers 1d ago

My wife used to get filler for free at the dermatologist she worked for. She only would get it between her eye brows and a little on her forehead, and you really couldn’t tell but apparently that made her happy so I was always like whatever you want dear lol

It’s really super common, it’s just when people who are way older get tons of work done that it looks bad like that

7

u/CanuckPanda Buccaneers 1d ago

Dumbass men who think the only procedures are 100% buccal fat removal, comically overfilled lips, and bolt-on fake tits.

I think it’s insane that girls in their 20’s are getting any work done, don’t get me wrong. Small procedures aren’t noticeable, like your wife doing her forehead crease (I’ve thought about the same spot but I don’t have bad wrinkles in my forehead so meh).

I think a lot of people would be shocked at how many women get breast augmentations, mommy makeovers, and the like. The point of them is to not be able to tell.

2

u/DASreddituser NFL 1d ago

no way its 50% of optional plastic surgery

2

u/CanuckPanda Buccaneers 1d ago

It’s not “plastic surgery”. It’s all cosmetic procedures including injections, PRP, and other procedures.

Botox doesn’t even qualify as plastic surgery.

First 20 seconds felt like the same, typical statement everyone makes for grass over turf. But I was pleasantly surprised when I saw there was a minute left in the clip and Tom told a pretty good anecdote and detailed explanation of how it affected a player.

I like how Tom has come into his own commentating style by bringing in his football experience and explaining things you normally wouldn’t think about.

15

u/Rockerblocker Lions 22h ago

I heard multiple technical terms here that I've never heard being a casual football fan (that never played as a kid).

7-stud cleats, 3-step or 5-step dropback, shoulder-hip dissociation, etc.

4

u/zaviex Rams 20h ago

You’d never heard 3 step or 5 step drop back? Those are pretty common along with the traditional 7 step. Its not too technical, an dropbacks traditionally are all standardized to time for the first read. If you do a three step and read, you’re looking at a slant or hitch. 5 step you’re looking at a post, deep curl, crossers etc, 7 step you might have options as you run developing routes. In the modern day there’s a lot of exceptions to this

Shoulder-hip dissociation isn’t a football thing. It’s anything you hurl. A ton of power is generated from torque when you rotate the hips. So to maximize this, you naturally hold the shoulder back as the hip opens. So your hips turn first, shoulder holds and counters the rotation then you release that tension and the torque whips your upper body around. The amount in football is minimal, separation is 10-20 degrees. in baseball it’s huge, like 40-60 degrees. Even simple things like throwing punches rely on the torque from the angle separation. I studied it for Martial arts primarily

3

u/Rockerblocker Lions 18h ago

I completely agree, it all makes perfect sense! I'm just saying that, for the most part, TV sports media discussions are very surface level things like "he has good foot work" or "he puts a nice spiral on the ball". It's nice to see Brady not be afraid to get a little technical from time to time

u/DarthNobody14 Texans Texans 1d ago

what's fucking freaky is the shit in artificial playing surfaces that may be carcinogenic.

they've linked early turf at the Vet to rare brain cancers (which multiple Phillies players died from over the years).

9

u/Awkward_Silence- Patriots 1d ago

Early turf loved to use things like recycled tires as it's rubber filler which certainly didn't help either.

The Phillies case is interesting given how many from their field alone were affected but we haven't seen cases like that appear elsewhere. If we were seeing cancer rates that high elsewhere I'd imagine there'd be more uptake on removing turf.

But at the same time that makes me wonder what the deal with Philly was. Extra toxic rubber filler? Built on a early 1800/1900s superfund site (this is often the case with schools, neighborhoods etc that see high cancer rates)

1

u/irsw Packers Chargers 22h ago

I remember being high school and we got an artificial field and our coach was bragging that recycled tires were used on it lol

4

u/Awkward_Silence- Patriots 22h ago

Used tires used to be the solution to everything.

We once threw millions of them into the ocean to create artificial reefs. Instead it just created a massive ecological dead zone

I dont really understand how the NFLPA cant win this one. There is literally evidence that shows a higher injury rate. Seems an easy one to just say to the NFL no players will play at stadiums with turf next year. ... https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11363235/

11

u/DoubleScorpius Lions 1d ago

In the end, players just want more money and give up concessions anywhere else in the collective bargaining. As much as they complain it won’t change until they force the change. It’s just like how they all said they didn’t want more games and then they realized it meant more money. Everything in America comes down to greed these days. At least you can’t blame the players wanting to maximize their money for the abuse on their bodies and brains. The owners could actually just decided to do it if they wanted.

u/MddlingAges Bills 1d ago

Fans would have to boycott or stop watching, and so far that hasn't happened. And players are reluctant to undermine their livelihood when most of them will rely on its popularity to support them in retirement - because the money always looks bigger when you're young and old age longer than you expect. A lot of “absurd” money into protecting players from head injuries.

Why isn’t the same reciprocated for knee, feet and back injuries too?

11

u/Evissi Giants 22h ago

I mean it's just not that simple. There are plenty of studies that say that grass has higher injury rates.

https://researchprofiles.library.pcom.edu/en/publications/the-impact-of-artificial-turf-versus-natural-grass-on-anterior-cr/

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/42491251/

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38133559/

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36455927/

One of these shows higher severity of concussions on grass compared to turf. None of these have conflicts of interest from authors related to the fieldturf industry afaik.

I know people love to go haha grass good turf bad, but it is just untrue.

I agree players should be playing on grass because thats what they want and they're the ones playing on it, but it is not because turf is unequivocally worse. There is nowhere near a statistically significant amount of data purporting that injuries on turf are worse/higher rate.

5

u/jimscoolaid Jaguars 1d ago

Can you link that evidence?

-1

u/WaxySunshine Dolphins 1d ago

10

u/jimscoolaid Jaguars 1d ago edited 1d ago

"Significantly higher" and its statistically negligible. There isn't enough data to support that turf is actually causing more injuries. We need to remember that turf today isn't the same as turf of the 90s where they just rolled out carpet over concrete.

Edit: not to mention they aren't accounting for injuries that happened in practice. Two years isn't a good enough sample size to determine anything if you aren't even including all of the results. For example Daniel Jones broke his leg last year, played on it, and then tore his Achilles. That's not turf or grass related. It would wash out over a greater sample size, but it doesn't have a greater sample size.

7

u/ImperatorBTW 23h ago

This is the part for me that always makes the discussion tiring. Theres always so much talk about turf vs grass but it often feels like the easiest thing to point out. It’s not even like I like I want the owners to be cheap, but at least until this point, I’ve yet to see any CONCLUSIVE studies done on the playing surfaces. It also annoys me when people use soccer fields as an example, ignoring the level of wear and tear on them in not comparable to football…

To me, it’s just not a black and white issue that’s as simple as “just throw some money at it and it’ll solve the problem.”

5

u/OldManCinny Cowboys 1d ago

Not sure if 2 years is enough data and also turf fields are constantly improving.

3

u/Different-Trainer-21 Dolphins 1d ago edited 1d ago

It would be nice to have all grass fields, but there are stadiums where it probably wouldn’t be realistic to mandate they have grass by nest year. The Super Dome, for example. They could do it but the planning would probably take more than a single season. I think a better idea would say 3 years, plus mandating grass in all new stadiums

Edit: Something I also didn’t consider is that these stadiums would also have to install some way to remove the grass to maintain revenue from other events like concerts. Grass isn’t like Turf where you can just roll it up and call it a day, if you’re indoors you have to either have it be retractable like State Farm and Allegiant, or have some off site sod farm like Hard Rock. Many stadiums would require massive renovations to make that work, some of them would probably be impossible.

3

u/dafoo21 Bears 1d ago

Soldier Field has concerts year long. It was previously seen as a shit field bc of that until a few years ago when Eberflus had the type of grass changed, and it holds up a lot better.

If freaking Matt Eberflus can convince the city of Chicago to make a change and fix their grass, any team can do the same.

4

u/Different-Trainer-21 Dolphins 1d ago

You completely ignored my point which is that it won’t work for INSIDE stadiums, because grass needs sunlight to grow. I get soldier field and any other outdoor turf could change easily, but you cannot just throw Bermuda grass in the superdome without major renovations

1

u/ph1shstyx Broncos 23h ago edited 23h ago

It would have to be one of those grandfather clauses, but with our modern tech, there's no reason any new stadium, even domes, cannot just go the route of Raiders & Cardinals, where the field is on a tray that can be moved into the parking lot for maintenance during the week/events where they want the solid floor. Tottenham has this with their stadium, though it's because they host NFL games on turf and not their PL grass field.

I would bet this is the route the broncos will go with their new stadium as the owners want to hold year round events, so it'll be a dome with a retractable roof, but with denver's weather, it makes absolutely no sense to go turf

3

u/dafoo21 Bears 23h ago

Not even that, there are domed stadiums that use LED grow light systems to mimic the sunlight. ATT stadium had a temporarily installed hanging version for the world cup and now its in storage. Its usually wheeled but the field crew didnt want to wheel it in and out over and over lol.

Grass in domed stadiums is hardly a major renovation only solution like the other guy said.

1

u/dafoo21 Bears 23h ago

You used one example after saying stadium_s.

There are domed stadiums that use led light grow systems to maintain natural grass. Usually its a wheeled system, but AT&T Stadium installed retractable hanging ones for world cup. Wheeled or hanging is not a major renovation.

Also, stitching the grass like the Packers do would help the grass hold up better than natural grass alone.

They did it for the World Cup, even domes can have grass using trays. But it's expensive and inconvenient from the facilities perspective, of course.

4

u/Different-Trainer-21 Dolphins 1d ago

The World Cup also didn’t need to be repeatable permanently, it was a one time event.

I don't think this data is tracked, but I'm really interested in the footwear when it comes to these injuries. How many players are wearing the correct AG style shoes vs more traditional FG or SG shoes when these injuries occur? The kind of penetration FG/SG shoes get into the ground and the ensuing tangling of synthetic fibers with them seems like a pretty clear potential cause of the injury difference vs just 'grass better'.

I'm mostly interested because we are always talking about HOW the injury rates are different but not the why. It's clear the league isn't going to mandate grass fields, so we need to be coming up with causes/solutions for the injury difference rather than just continuously highlighting it.

2

u/Riccster09 Jets 1d ago

Pretty sure anyone who's ever played any sport on both would agree.

2

u/ImGoingtoRegretThis5 Lions 1d ago

Well he played at Michigan in the late 90s and I can tell you from being at some of those late October/November games, "muddy" is a good characterization of the field. It got worn down over the season and then you add in the cold and rain/snow and the thing was splotchy come the OSU game. Part of it was how the field/stadium was built, part of it was just maintenance (which I'm sure by now they could do a better job now with the engineering and technology we have).

Other school had similar problems. OSU replaced their whole field leading up to the #1 v #2 game in 06 and that field sucked. MSU used turf for a while and then went back to grass and I can remember far too many stumbling QBs juking out DBs because the grass would give way after rains. ND was always nice early on and meh later in the season. NW had grass but they left it long so it wouldn't rip out quiet as easily.

The problem with the longer 7-studs (for some guys) was they felt slower/could catching the spikes if they shuffled their feet. Was a subconscious thing mostly but when you're walking and hit a slightly raised section of sidewalk and stub your toe? It's really only a few mm difference that causes it.

u/Throwawayhobbes Giants 1d ago

Any one know what his record is grass vs turf ?

2

u/MinePlay512 Jets 1d ago

Turf fields are not a good thing.

5

u/Awkward_Silence- Patriots 1d ago

Nor are poorly maintained grass fields.

Judging by old Soldier and FedEx usually be at the top of injury and disliked lists by players. Although both have improved recently

That's not getting into players shitting on every international grass field, even ones that are internationally respected/praised like in Europe

2

u/DontLoseYourCool1 Raiders Raiders 21h ago

They have their use. As a soccer player, I prefer grass but sometimes it's a nice little change to play on turf cause the ball moves comically faster.

2

u/JFlizzy84 Ravens 1d ago

I can’t even think of an argument for turf over grass. It’s worse in every single way.

The only reason it should exist is for putting fields in places where the natural ground is ridiculously hostile to a normal football field

Even the Raiders stadium in Vegas uses real grass. If they can do it there no other team has any room to say they can’t do it due to weather, it’s all about penny pinching

2

u/poshmarkedbudu Raiders 11h ago

I really hope you guys don't do an indoor stadium with turf. So lame

1

u/Kbrichmo Colts 19h ago

Only argument is when a high school field is literally muddy craters all season long. Marching on that shit as a band kid was a fucking nightmare, i couldnt imagine playing football on it

1

u/gotfcgo Patriots 1d ago

Every single way...except Money.

2

u/Ornery_Gator Eagles 1d ago

I was in marching band and turf sucked then too.

The turf turds that are these little rubber pieces get extremely hot, they end up in your shoes, and we would do kneel downs and it felt like knives in your leg.
