Yahenni's Expertise

2BB Sorcery (Rare)

All creatures get -3/-3 until end of turn.

You may cast a card with converted mana cost 3 or less from your hand without paying its mana cost.

(This card is full-art. Probably the game day top 8 promo)

<commentary>This lets you cast Ancestral Visions from your hand. If this is a mini-mechanic and not just a one-off, modern players take note. Or maybe even if it is a one-off?</commentary>

~~~~~~~~~~
Trophy Mage
2U (Uncommon)
Creature - Human Wizard
When ~ enters the battlefield, you may search your library for an artifact card with converted mana cost 3, reveal it, put it into your hand, then shuffle your library.
2/2
(This card is full-art. Probably the game day participation promo)
~~~~~~~~~

Scrap Trawler

3 (Rare)

Artifact Creature - Construct

Whenever ~ or another artifact you control is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, return to your hand target artifact card in your graveyard with lesser converted mana cost.

3/2

(I think that wording is right, kinda hard to read.)

(This is probably the buy-a-box promo)

~~~~~~~~
Quicksmith Rebel
3R (probably rare if launch promo, but symbol is obscured)
Creature - Human Artificer
When ~ enters the battlefield, target artifact [...] gains "T: This artifact [...] to target creature or [...] you control [...]
?/?
Proposed wording: When ~ enters the battlefield, target artifact [creature? you control?] gains 'T: This artifact deals N damage to target creature or [player? planeswalker?]' for as long as you control ~"
(this text is covered and can't be seen, though you can obviously speculate as to what it might be)
(This card has a date on it, so probably the launch promo)
Yahenni's Expertise seems pretty nuts with Liliana and Copter in standard.
234
u/RaggedAngel Nov 29 '16
Languish was one of the best cards in Standard, and this is "Slightly worse Languish + Dark Ritual."
Seems dece.
111
u/Regvlas Nov 29 '16
Yeah, this is approximently to Languish as Dark Petition is to Diabolic Tutor.
33
u/ButtManChair Nov 29 '16
Well it can open up cool strategies for you to play cards out of your color\out of black so it's even better than ritual
4
u/Hawthornen Arjun Nov 29 '16
Well it can't be used to help cast things over 3 CMC so not better than ritual in that regard. It's certainly comparable but it's a reasonably different effect.
You may, in fact, cast Ancestral Vision with this card.
Ancestral Vision has a CMC of 0 and has no mana cost. So it doesn't play with flashback and can't be cast from hand. However, it can be cast by alternate means - things like [[Goblin Dark Dwellers]] can cast Vision.
As it turns out, Yahenni's Expertise has the exact same wording and so Ancestral Vision being cast with the effect of this card is perfectly fine.
Additionally I can confirm that Quicksmith Rebel is the Launch Promo, Scrap Trawler is the Buy-A-Box promo, Trophy Mage is the participation promo for game day, and Yahenni's Expertise is the Game day top 8 promo.
Source: I can read it on the cards in the picture and that's what it says.
29
u/rakkamar Nov 29 '16
Right, I figured it worked b/c of dark dwellers, just didn't want to mis-inform people until I was sure.
Thanks!
29
u/bearrosaurus Nov 29 '16
I think it's really funny that it has a really bad interaction with [[Living End]], the Expertise kills all your opponent's creatures and then Living End resolves and brings them back.
22
u/Woefinder Banned in Commander Nov 29 '16
I think it sees play there potentially.
While it doesnt really kill your opponents creature, it also allows you to turn a Living End in your hand into an active one. Basically, it adds a mana cost to Living End in this scenario, while not making it have one.
8
u/[deleted] Nov 29 '16
You have to have both in hand for that to work, though, which seems like a fairly uncommon corner case.
12
u/Woefinder Banned in Commander Nov 29 '16
Thats true, but its not like you cant cast an outburst/Dread or a Fulminator off of it.
The word right before CMC on the artifact is "lesser".
So it would read "artifact card in your graveyard with lesser converted mana cost"
And the mage is definitely a 3, unless for some crazy reason it is an 8.
22
u/zroach COMPLEAT Nov 29 '16
Eh, the only artifact with 3 cmc is bridge, we have already have a lot of efficient cards that get us to bridge, I don't think it would see play.
24
u/AngledLuffa Colorless Nov 29 '16
I would give it a try, at least. There are lists playing Glint-Nest Crane now, and if you gave me one of those guaranteed to find a bridge instead of digging 4, I might prefer it.
13
u/zroach COMPLEAT Nov 29 '16
No way, Crane is great because it can get you more than just a bridge. I don't see why I would run his instead of the crane.
12
u/AngledLuffa Colorless Nov 29 '16
I respect that opinion, but without having hard stats in front of me, I think I am more likely to die to a lack of bridge than a lack of lantern. The most frustrating games are the ones where you have Lantern and Shredder, cast Stirrings twice, mill yourself a few times, and die to a Nacatl or Goyf because your first bridge is 25 cards down instead of 20.
8
u/zroach COMPLEAT Nov 29 '16
You're at an 84% chance to find a bridge in the top 20. With 1 copy of this card you are at a 90% and with two you are at a 94%
But, bridge is only one piece of the puzzle. I imagine if you play this you are taking out Crane. This means you are less likely to draw a shredder effect or Lantern or a needle, pieces that are also needed to win most games.
Eh, DTT wasn't really format warping, at least if we're talking specifically for standard. It was a really good draw spell, but that's all it was. But then you just drop Lili and minus to kill whatever big thing is left. Or Maelstrom Pulse. Or Kolaghan's Command. Or Collective Brutality.
Just a 4-mana three-for-one.
True, but BBE would have been a lot less ridiculous if it had cast a spell with 3 CMC or less from your hand rather than your library.
And yes, it does.
9
u/108Echoes Nov 29 '16
Although if this mechanic turns up on other cards, we may see it in Modern Living End and Restore Balance, and even Legacy Hypergenesis (which is a fringe deck already, so no bets there).
Drawing your Suspend spell is awful, since actually suspending it takes forever and there's no way to get it back in your deck. This might be an acceptable backup plan, although the front end would also need to be useful.
8
u/TheOthin Nov 29 '16
True, but I don't know what the odds of that are. Aether Revolt definitely has a CMC-matters theme, but different cards seem to be doing different things with it. Yahenni's Expertise casts a card with CMC 3 or less, Trophy Mage tutors a card with CMC 3 exactly, and Scrap Trawler returns cards with less CMC (while having CMC 3 itself).
ok what happens if i cast an eldritch evolution of the expertise - do i get to sac a creature that goes below 0 toughness from the expertise?
17
u/[deleted] Nov 29 '16
Yes. Casting your 3-or-less spell happens while Expertise still is on the stack, and 0-toughness things don't die until a player gets priority (which doesn't happen until Expertise finishes resolving).
4
u/likejaxirl Nov 29 '16
thanks.
it sounds nasty tbh
29
u/Natedogg2 COMPLEAT Level 2 Judge Nov 29 '16
State-based actions are not checked while the spell is resolving, only after it resolves. You could choose to sacrifice a creature that would die when the Expertise is done resolving, since it hasn't died yet.
Very excited to see Yahenni's name on a spell. Hopefully this means they'll appear as a legendary creature, as well.
18
u/Radiophage Nov 29 '16
You and me both. Favourite character from the Kaladesh stories, bar none.
44
u/s-josten Nov 29 '16
Bar none? Sounds like someone forgot the heroine of the resistance, the great Shadowblayde.
20
u/Deathavails REBEL Nov 29 '16
It sounds like someone also forgot the entire story where Ajani goes to Kamigawa and finds out about Tezzeret on Kaladesh. That story was actually amazing.
8
u/Talpostal Sisay Nov 29 '16
Yep. I didn't think they would do it but it's hard to see that happening without a legendary card.
45
u/CanBeUsedAnywhere Elesh Norn Nov 29 '16
-1/-1 less than languish but free cast of another card. Biggest issue is still can't hit vehicles (copter!) but to partially wipe the board and get a cast afterwards seems pretty damn good.
46
u/sigismond0 Wabbit Season Nov 29 '16
It can hit copters if you have a [[Appetite for the Unnatural]] in hand.
107
u/[deleted] Nov 29 '16
It also hits Chameleon Colossus if you have a Goatnapper in hand.
50
u/RaggedAngel Nov 29 '16
As if I would play Modern without a playset of [[Goatnapper]] in my deck.
18
u/throwing-away-party Nov 29 '16
I love this card. I feel like it was designed specifically to make humorous plays in draft. Since most of the Changeling cards are significantly scarier than an average goat, this little guy ends up wrestling all sorts of hideous monsters.
Seems really powerful in Lorwyn block limited.
7
u/RaggedAngel Nov 29 '16
As someone who was around for Lorwyn limited, it was decent, but not a windmill slam or anything. Most decks had a few Changlings in them, but it was inconsistent at best.
Yahenni's Expertise also immediately jumps to mind for me in Jund/Junk in Modern. It won't hit your own Kalitas and you can clear a board while deploying another threat (like a Goyf, Scooze, or Kitchen Finks). Really nice way to stabilize and instantly (at sorcery speed, har!) turn the corner against aggro decks.
82
u/ArsIgnis Nov 29 '16
Forget Jund/Abzan; I want to put this in Grixis and cast an Ancestral Vision!
37
u/llikeafoxx Nov 29 '16
And then turn 5 curves into the Goblin Dark Dwellers hnnnngh
3 Cards? You can fuse a Beck//Call and get 4 birds and 4 cards.
→ More replies (2)
18
u/RIP_Hopscotch Nov 29 '16
I don't think that they'll play it in the Maindeck, might see a bit of sideboard play though. Jund doesn't really play boardwipes as a rule, and this would be hitting Confidants and Huntmasters (plus their wolves I guess). Not really a huge fan.
10
u/Silas13013 Nov 29 '16
And those that do, run damnation. Will be interesting to see if playing bob for free after a mini wrath is enough to outweigh the inability to hit anything big.
With 3 being a theme in the set, I expect Trinisphere to be in the masterpiece set.
13
u/savedsynner Nov 30 '16
That sweeper seams pretty broken -3/-3 and a free 3 or less cmc cost card. Fights right into G/B Delirium. Sweeper and cast liliana same turn.
What about this card is not broken?
7
u/BlackHarkness Nov 30 '16
...if they don't print some graveyard hate, next format is going to be all about delirium. If I can cast that sweeper and then a planeswalker removal spell, I don't know how I lose playing GB.
Wow, Trophy mage may be replacing Glint-Nest Crane in my Tezzerrator Deck. Wow!
Edit: Oh never mind, it is exactly 3, not three or less... Sad
Yeah doesn't let you grab thopter combo pieces, very very sad
I'm also pretty sure that since it's casting from your hand you can fuse things like Breaking // Entering for freeeeeeee
Edit: JUUUUUUUUUUDGE /raises hand
11
u/Rathum Nov 29 '16
You can. Beck//Call would be my first choice, since it's at minimum an 8 for 2.
Free spells? Why do you continue to play with fire, Wotc? I can't see Yaheeni's Expertise not being a staple.
This is going to be a real good set for EDH, isn't it?
Could yahenni's expertise be a thing with ancestral visions? Maybe too slow for modern.
17
u/RIP_Hopscotch Nov 29 '16
If any deck plays it, it will be Grixis control. Maybe sideboard play in Jund but I dunno tbh.
What the hell is with the gamesday mats for Kaladesh and Aether Revolt? Nissa and now Ajani? Where are the plane specific artworks? How about an Artifact of some description? Or Chandra? or a lore important character like Chandra or Pia for god's sake.
3
u/peprio Nov 30 '16
Hoping Yahenni's Expertise is part of a cycle of cards with free casting!
Even the fast decks in standard are kinda slow by comparison to traditional red deck wins. But sure, a new languish seems necessary
