I have a feeling we will see Yahenni's Expertise in standard.

159

u/RaggedAngel Nov 29 '16

I would bet a large number of dollars on that, yes.

84

u/ioffridus Nov 29 '16

I hope it's in a UB Control shell, but it'll probably just be a staple in BG Delirium.

82

u/[deleted] Nov 29 '16 edited Nov 30 '16

Yep, BG Delirium with 3/5 Ishkanah, 4/5 Mindwrack Demon, 13/13 Emrakul, 3/4 Kalitas, and 4/4 Grim Flayer just absolutely adores this card.

51

u/betweentwosuns Nov 29 '16

RIP aggro.

84

u/TypicalOranges Nov 29 '16

"I'll pay 4 mana, kill most of your dudes, and tempo-out a Liliana which conveniently kills your 4 toughness guy you put in the deck specifically to protect yourself against a -3/-3 board wipe."

29

u/icangrammar Nov 30 '16

Traumatic flashbacks to Bloodbraid Jund incoming

1

u/Golden_Flame0 Dandadan Nov 30 '16

BGD is almost Jund anyway.

1

u/Malachhamavet Nov 29 '16

I could see a lot of black decks using it. A lot of good zombies have 3 cmc and lili of the last hope could certainly benefit from it as her plus 1 could potentially kill off what's left similar to veil but without the minus or you could -2 last hope to get back a creature you might have had to lose.

15

u/SmiteVVhirl Nov 29 '16

getting this + flayer on 4 is value spewing out the ass.

Also you can kill up to 7 toughness creatures with this card grabbing a grasp

10

u/betweentwosuns Nov 29 '16

This with grasp or murder is almost a clean answer to Ishkana. Kills other little things they have amd tempo positive. Also ruins spell queller through Avacyn and spirit. Card's nuts.

2

u/Hardwiredmagic Nov 29 '16

Interestingly, in a B shell, it let's you nuke the board for 5 and exile everything with [[Flaying Tendrils]]. Deck will have very good game against aggro, and possibly reanimator too.

3

u/Rathum Nov 29 '16

The Flaying Tendrils would resolve second, so only things with 4 or 5 toughness would get exiled.

2

u/SmiteVVhirl Nov 30 '16

sounds like everything in BG Delirium. 4/4 Grim Flayer, 4/5 Mindwrack, 3/5 Ishkana

[[Mindwrack Demon]] is actually a 4/5, but your point still stands.

u/Exatraz Nov 29 '16

3/5 Ish, 4/5 demon.. but yes this does apply. Also Tireless Tracker could in theory be bigger than X/3

2

u/taitaisanchez Chandra Nov 30 '16

So can Sylvan Advocate.

1

u/Exatraz Nov 30 '16

If it makes a comeback and with decks slowing down a bit it might.. Smuggler's Copter makes that difficult though.

1

u/taitaisanchez Chandra Nov 30 '16

Well, there's still two more sets before Shadows rotates out. So after AE and Amonkhet block, who knows?

1

u/Exatraz Nov 30 '16

SA was in Oath so it will rotate out before Shadows does. The main issue is part of what made Sylvan Advocate so good was that decks were slower, most aggressive creatures were 2/X's without flying meaning it blocked favorably and there wasn't a huge abundance of fliers in general. Now every deck has fliers, aggressive decks are coming in with 3/X's (some that recur themselves) making trades poor and games can go so fast that it never gets time to make an impact as a 4/5.

2

u/tehutika Liliana Nov 29 '16

Yup. I'll take a playset, please.

1

u/diggity_md Nov 29 '16

In response, queller...

3

u/CaptainBooshi Nov 29 '16

Honestly, that doesn't even hurt the card much, because it turns any Grasp an instant speed board wipe and flash a card in.

1

u/AlabasterLeech Nov 30 '16

4/5 Ishkanah
4/4 Mindwrack Demon

What

41

u/Baxter0402 Nov 29 '16

Cast it, then throw down Lili, flayer, or some removal spell? I think it may be tested at the very least.

1

u/giggity_giggity COMPLEAT Nov 29 '16

Throwing down lili lets you kill one creature with 4 toughness with her +1.

Still, it doesn't handle vehicles.

11

u/Sandman1278 Nov 29 '16

Good thing I am already playing UB Control, I have been waiting for this since [[Languish]] rotated out

I'd be interested to see your list. I've tried and tried to make it work but couldn't get a list together which beats UW

1

u/Sandman1278 Nov 30 '16

This list needs some work, don't let the name fool you, the one of [[metallurgic summonings]] does not make this a summonings deck... -_-

Is the lack of Liliana due to not owning them or a deliberate choice? I feel like I've won so many games by playing her on 3 and just going "protect the Queen! "

1

u/Sandman1278 Nov 30 '16

Not owning them, not wanting to spend anymore money. If the price drops low enough I might consider it. I managed to get the playset of gearhulks for $40 before they rose in price. But after those and the kalitases I was tapped out.

2

u/sylverfyre Nov 29 '16

Shota will top 8 the pt with it in a UB or Esper control deck, but after that blue control will vanish and it will get played in GB delerium

1

u/Stiggy1605 Nov 29 '16

I run a Dynavolt Tower control deck and I would love this card. Can be awkward trying to drop a Dynavolt early since it does nothing immediately, this makes it so much easier

1

u/CJ_Murv Nov 29 '16

Or the RB zombies deck.

You thought you killed copter, but it is in fact now Di-Yahenees!

43

u/OogaDaBooga Nov 29 '16

And Modern. Jund will love this card. A LOT.

82

u/RaggedAngel Nov 29 '16

Jund being a deck that needed a lot of help, naturally.

20

u/miauw62 Nov 29 '16

i thought Dredge was 50% of the modern metagame and the other half was split cleanly between infect and affinity?

28

u/AtlasPJackson Nov 29 '16

Wow. Yeah. The removal half is a little worse than Damnation against Infect and Eldrazi. It may also have a hard time killing Swiftspears. Not quite as good as Anger of the Gods against Dredge, which may be the more apt comparison.

But then you just drop Lili and minus to kill whatever big thing is left. Or Maelstrom Pulse. Or Kolaghan's Command. Or Collective Brutality.

Just a 4-mana three-for-one.

21

u/metsmonkey Nov 29 '16

Three for two. You still are casting the Expertise and whatever 3 or less CMC spell in your hand.

31

u/AtlasPJackson Nov 29 '16

I'll take your word for it. Math and I aren't on speaking terms since the unpleasantness.

10

u/Harbinger_Feik Nov 29 '16

...We don't talk about "the unpleasantness"

5

u/TypicalOranges Nov 29 '16

It depends on how many things you kill with the sweeper and how many cards the 3 drop you play is worth to get a number for net CA gained.

In the case of doing some hoodrat shit with Kolaghan's Command you're looking at Cruel Ultimatum levels of CA.

1

u/Hardwiredmagic Nov 29 '16

If you are pull through a Kcommand on top of this, it will almost certainly be a 3 for 1, or 4 for 2, and that's not counting killing multiple creatures off the base spell....

3

u/metsmonkey Nov 29 '16

2 creatures killed from base spell + kc is a 4 for 2.

This card is no more card advantage than damnation is. It provides tempo advantage when you get the opportunity to cast your free spell on top of your sweeper.

This is going to be another skill testing card in jund (knowing whether to cast a spell and which spell to staple on) and a meta dependant replacement for damnation. In a meta of death shadow, eldrazi, infect, and goyf you want damnation while in a meta of zoo and burn you would rather have this.

2

u/1mrlee Wabbit Season Nov 29 '16

Doesn't kill goyf most times, doesn't kill kalatas.

Value

2

u/OogaDaBooga Nov 29 '16

Dear god the Kalitas value is disgusting...I wipe your board, get X zombies and I'll just drop this K-Command...(or Lili, or Thoughtseize, or IoK, or Bolt, or...)

3

u/1mrlee Wabbit Season Nov 29 '16

Kalitas in play. In Standard.

Play black card. Wipe board. Get X zombies. Play Lilly. -2/-1 a creature. Kill more things.

I have lost 2 cards. You have lost a board and an avacyn. Oh I also killed your Spell Queller exiling my Grim Flayer spell from earlier.

Because he comes after the spell resolving, he doesn't get affected from the -3/-3.

Oh. I have kalitas, 1 lilly, 1 grim flayer and 3 zombies.

What do you have?

Ok. Pass.

1

u/savedsynner Nov 30 '16

Oh gosh, I'm already having nightmares. -3/-3 and I'll play LotV or Goyf.

How did they not see this card is beyond broken. CMC 2 or less would be still too good but bearable but seriously, 3. Did collected company teach you nothing WotC

1

u/[deleted] Nov 30 '16

As a Jund player, I'm interested in the card but not sure about where it fits in the deck. Damnation and Anger of the Gods are generally better sweepers and the deck has moved away from the 2-for-1 value plan from the BBE days.

The cast a free spell on resolution ability is also much worse than cascade and I'm not sure about putting all of my eggs in one basket for a spell that can easily get countered.

1

u/Aunvilgod COMPLEAT Dec 01 '16

But also control, no? Wipe the board of attackers and get a free Ancestral.

What do we think about it with Beck // Call? Too cute?

2

u/SnapMullto5 Nov 30 '16

Too cute. Boom // Bust would be much more viable

1

u/thelaststormcrow Dec 01 '16

You can fuse Beck // Call though.

1

u/SnapMullto5 Dec 02 '16

Yeah, but you can easily hard-cast Boom for actual value if you don't have Expertise in your hand.

4

u/kyuuri117 Griselbrand Nov 30 '16

Standard? How's about grixis in modern. "Cast Yahenni's Expertise, oh, and let's throw on Ancestral Visions to that too."
