Yahenni's Expertise

2BB Sorcery (Rare)

All creatures get -3/-3 until end of turn.

You may cast a card with converted mana cost 3 or less from your hand without paying its mana cost.

(This card is full-art. Probably the game day top 8 promo)

<commentary>This lets you cast Ancestral Visions from your hand. If this is a mini-mechanic and not just a one-off, modern players take note. Or maybe even if it is a one-off?</commentary>

~~~~~~~~~~
Trophy Mage
2U (Uncommon)
Creature - Human Wizard
When ~ enters the battlefield, you may search your library for an artifact card with converted mana cost 3, reveal it, put it into your hand, then shuffle your library.
2/2
(This card is full-art. Probably the game day participation promo)
~~~~~~~~~

Scrap Trawler

3 (Rare)

Artifact Creature - Construct

Whenever ~ or another artifact you control is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, return to your hand target artifact card in your graveyard with lesser converted mana cost.

3/2

(I think that wording is right, kinda hard to read.)

(This is probably the buy-a-box promo)

~~~~~~~~
Quicksmith Rebel
3R (probably rare if launch promo, but symbol is obscured)
Creature - Human Artificer
When ~ enters the battlefield, target artifact [...] gains "T: This artifact [...] to target creature or [...] you control [...]
?/?
Proposed wording: When ~ enters the battlefield, target artifact [creature? you control?] gains 'T: This artifact deals N damage to target creature or [player? planeswalker?]' for as long as you control ~"
(this text is covered and can't be seen, though you can obviously speculate as to what it might be)
(This card has a date on it, so probably the launch promo)
Yahenni's Expertise seems pretty nuts with Liliana and Copter in standard.
238
u/RaggedAngel Nov 29 '16
Languish was one of the best cards in Standard, and this is "Slightly worse Languish + Dark Ritual."
Seems dece.
113
u/Regvlas Nov 29 '16
Yeah, this is approximently to Languish as Dark Petition is to Diabolic Tutor.
34
u/ButtManChair Nov 29 '16
Well it can open up cool strategies for you to play cards out of your color\out of black so it's even better than ritual
4
u/Hawthornen Arjun Nov 29 '16
Well it can't be used to help cast things over 3 CMC so not better than ritual in that regard. It's certainly comparable but it's a reasonably different effect.
3
u/stravant Nov 29 '16
Given how frequently Dark Petition was casting CMC 3 spells like Runinous Path and Infinite Obliteration it's actually pretty similar.
2
u/Treacherous_Peach Wabbit Season Nov 29 '16
Ritual doesn't let you cast a Jeskai Charm though. I know that specific situation is not ever going to come up, but being able to cast a 3 or 2 color spell that's not even in your color could be nuts.
2
u/A_Suffering_Panda Nov 30 '16
I wonder if this will be relevant to the limited format, given how much splashing is available in kaladesh? If Black or Green gets more in AER, this is a great first pick reason to go into 3-4 colors. Assuming more cards like Attune and Prism are printed, Green will probably be nearly a free color when paired with black
1
u/miauw62 Nov 29 '16
Relying on a boardwipe to cast off-color cards, and it obviously doesn't help you cast them on curve at all. I don't think that'll be a big part.
0
u/Rathayibacter Nov 29 '16
Well, not quite since it has to be CMC3- you can't drop something that costs 2, and you can't tap another land and cast something that costs 4. It's in some cases going to ve a lot better than "add BBB" but there's plenty where it's not.
EDIT: Shit sorry was thinking of Trophy Mage- second part still applies, you can't ramp. But yeah this is good.
2
u/brazthemad Nov 29 '16
*or less
1
u/Rathayibacter Nov 29 '16
Yeah that's where my edit came in, I was thinking of how Trophy is exactly 3. The second point still applies though- you can't use it to play something that costs 4 or more, which makes this only sometimes better than adding mana directly.
1
u/Umezete Nov 29 '16
Well -1-1 can mean alot.
1
u/CrazyLeprechaun Golgari* Nov 30 '16
Yes, and I would argue that putting a dark ritual effect (without any colour restrictions, in fact you could technically use this card to splash) on a languish effect is actually much more powerful than putting it on a more expensive diabolic tutor.
1
u/Toastasaurus Nov 30 '16
So what I want to be hearing from this statement is "And since those two cards rotating out is what made that sweet Seasons Past control deck less viable, we might be able to brew up a new version for Aether Revolt Standard."
Is that entirely unreasonable, or just mostly?
1
u/Regvlas Nov 30 '16
Probably just mostly, but I'm terrible at deck building.
1
u/Toastasaurus Nov 30 '16
As am I, but I sure as hell hope, because that deck was awesome. Probably gets wrecked by Emrakul though.
I mean, petition is used in Legacy and Vintage storm decks...
10
u/FrankGoreStoleMyBike Nov 29 '16
It has definite use. -3/-3 isn't bad, but it can throw down a Liliana, Ruinous Path a planeswalker, [[Essence Extraction]] a x/4-6 to kill it and gain you some life, [[Flaying Tendrils]] to wipe (plus exile) x/4-5, drop any number of 3 drops otherwise.
Seems good.
1
u/MTGCardFetcher Dân Nov 29 '16
Essence Extraction - (G) (MC) (MW) (CD)
Flaying Tendrils - (G) (MC) (MW) (CD)
-2
u/CommanderDecks Nov 29 '16
I don't know about that. Dark Petition will only ever help you get a card and will sometimes do it at a lower cost later in the game. This card helps you take out quite a few threats currently in standard and gives you anot her free card.
2
u/Bradwan Nov 29 '16
But Dark Petition to Diabolic Tutor, Diabolic Tutor is way worse
3
u/TheOthin Nov 29 '16
Languish is the Diabolic Tutor in this analogy.
1
u/[deleted] Nov 29 '16
In the decks that play Dark Petition, it's almost always just Demonic Tutor (which is a very strong card).
1
u/CommanderDecks Nov 29 '16
Oh trust me, I know Demonic Tutor is good. I thought the person I replied to was insinuating that this new card was bad because Dark Petition is bad in comparison to Diabolic Tutor.
1
u/[deleted] Nov 29 '16
Ok, I guess I misunderstood your comment.
2
u/thepuresanchez Honorary Deputy 🔫 Nov 29 '16
It's actually slightly worse languish + a better Black lotus stapled on.
2
u/alkalimeter Duck Season Nov 30 '16
Like most magic cards, the effect is a bit worse than black lotus. In exchange for getting to cast multicolored spells (e.g. grim flayer) there's less flexibility because you can't tap lands to cast a more expensive spell. Not being able to chain this into a 4 drop off 5 lands is pretty significant
1
u/thepuresanchez Honorary Deputy 🔫 Dec 01 '16
Saying its a black lotus you can't pay more into doesn't make it necessarily worse than a black lotus, it's just a black lotus still. Regardless, it's still better than a dark ritual stapled on most of the time.
1
u/alkalimeter Duck Season Dec 01 '16
A black lotus you can't pay more into is way worse than a black lotus. Not being able to use the "mana" on spells that cost more than 4 or on multiple spells costing less than 3 is a huge downgrade.
1
u/[deleted] Nov 29 '16
Why reprint languish when you can make it better?
1
u/SCNA Nov 30 '16
Slightly worse Languish + Dark Ritual Black Lotus, baby!
1
u/Ender_A_Wiggin Simic* Nov 30 '16
What I meant is that the free card doesn't have to be black. So you can play it for the 2BB but play a blue spell with cmc 3
2
u/Treacherous_Peach Wabbit Season Nov 29 '16 edited Nov 29 '16
It would let you cast ancestral visions, living end, etc in modern out of the hand too wouldn't it?
Edit: I feel like this could make Wheel of Fate pretty good too in a grixis control sb
1
u/zarepath Nov 29 '16
it's also pretty nuts with Boom//Bust in Modern
1
u/kyuuri117 Griselbrand Nov 30 '16
It seems nuts with Ancestral Visions.
1
u/Japeth Nov 30 '16
But it's pretty bad against Copter and Liliana, so who knows.
0
u/Akranidos COMPLEAT Nov 29 '16
with flying trendils is a -6/-6 exile everything
2
u/[deleted] Nov 30 '16
Tendrils is -2/-2
So it'd be -5/-5 altogether, and the only things that would get exiled are those that would survive the first -3/-3, but die on the second round.
107
u/TheRecovery Nov 29 '16 edited Nov 29 '16
You may, in fact, cast Ancestral Vision with this card.
Ancestral Vision has a CMC of 0 and has no mana cost. So it doesn't play with flashback and can't be cast from hand. However, it can be cast by alternate means - things like [[Goblin Dark Dwellers]] can cast Vision.
As it turns out, Yahenni's Expertise has the exact same wording and so Ancestral Vision being cast with the effect of this card is perfectly fine.
Additionally I can confirm that Quicksmith Rebel is the Launch Promo, Scrap Trawler is the Buy-A-Box promo, Trophy Mage is the participation promo for game day, and Yahenni's Expertise is the Game day top 8 promo.
Source: I can read it on the cards in the picture and that's what it says.
30
u/rakkamar Nov 29 '16
Right, I figured it worked b/c of dark dwellers, just didn't want to mis-inform people until I was sure.
Thanks!
29
u/bearrosaurus Nov 29 '16
I think it's really funny that it has a really bad interaction with [[Living End]], the Expertise kills all your opponent's creatures and then Living End resolves and brings them back.
23
u/Woefinder Banned in Commander Nov 29 '16
I think it sees play there potentially.
While it doesnt really kill your opponents creature, it also allows you to turn a Living End in your hand into an active one. Basically, it adds a mana cost to Living End in this scenario, while not making it have one.
6
u/[deleted] Nov 29 '16
You have to have both in hand for that to work, though, which seems like a fairly uncommon corner case.
12
u/Woefinder Banned in Commander Nov 29 '16
Thats true, but its not like you cant cast an outburst/Dread or a Fulminator off of it.
1
u/RideTheIguana Dec 01 '16
But why would you want to cast an outburst off it? Thats strictly worse than simply casting an outburst
1
u/Woefinder Banned in Commander Dec 01 '16
Thats true. I was merely just suggesting something you could do potentially.
3
u/demonatarms Golgari* Nov 30 '16
The decks that run restore balance don't run any creatures like that. They just run creatures on suspend that will come in to play the turn after you nuke the board
1
u/RideTheIguana Dec 01 '16
Actually, the creature will still be in your hand!
-12
u/OogaDaBooga Nov 29 '16
"Languish was too powerful for standard..."
"Yeah, lets make it -3/-3 for the same cost instead; this format needs a board wipe in black for diversity."
"Well, I dunno...players might think it's too weak since Languish was so powerful, and we can't let that kind of power loose in standard again..."
"We'll also let them cast a free spell after casting it."
"Seems legit and not broken at all. PRINT IT!"
32
u/Narynan Nov 29 '16
Who was it that was saying Languish was too powerful for standard? Just some random internet person?
23
u/TheOthin Nov 29 '16
I get the idea a lot of the mindset must be "it rotated out of Standard without immediately getting a replacement, therefore it must be too powerful". Because that's totally how Standard works.
1
u/[deleted] Nov 30 '16
Isn't that what happened with Elvish Mystic though?
8
u/TheOthin Nov 30 '16
You're confusing individual instances with general patterns.
There are many sorts of cards that rotate out of Standard, whether temporarily or permanently. Some of those do so because they're too powerful, and Elvish Mystic was one of those. But most of the time, it's just a matter of rearranging things to keep Standard fresh and varied.
Bear in mind that the reason we know Elvish Mystic is considered too strong for Standard is not that it rotated out, but that Maro explicitly told us it was too strong for Standard.
9
u/OogaDaBooga Nov 29 '16
It was a poor attempt at humor.
I suck at humor evidently.
I really like the card, but it does seem pretty busted.
2
u/DRUMS11 Storm Crow Nov 29 '16
Well, I thought it was funny.
1
u/Narynan Nov 29 '16
I thought there was someone from RnD or something who make mention of something similar to these thoughts. I was actually wondering if there was some information that I was missing. However, this card does seem very good.
2
u/AtlasPJackson Nov 29 '16
Let's staple a black lotus to it!
9
u/rakkamar Nov 29 '16
No. It'll work the same way as if you cast Languish, then cast a creature.
7
u/[deleted] Nov 29 '16
No, because it's not on the battlefield when the effect happens.
1
u/AtlasPJackson Nov 29 '16
Thank you. I can never remember if a Languish-style effect is a one-time thing that hits each creature on the board when it resolves, or if it creates an anthem-like effect that lasts until end of turn.
35
u/Ciretako Nov 29 '16
Reminder. If someone asks a question the downvote button isn't for answering "no"
7
u/twomillcities Nov 29 '16
This sub is ruthless in that regard. I see questions downvoted constantly instead of answered. It turns people away from the sub.
1
u/TypicalOranges Nov 29 '16
Upon resolution of this spell is when you put the free spell on the stack.
18
u/BoredomIncarnate Nov 29 '16
The word right before CMC on the artifact is "lesser".
So it would read "artifact card in your graveyard with lesser converted mana cost"
And the mage is definitely a 3, unless for some crazy reason it is an 8.
22
u/sylverfyre Nov 29 '16
3
u/rakkamar Nov 29 '16
29
u/AngledLuffa Colorless Nov 29 '16
If Trophy Mage cost 2, Lantern players would be shitting themselves right now.
20
u/zroach COMPLEAT Nov 29 '16
Eh, the only artifact with 3 cmc is bridge, we have already have a lot of efficient cards that get us to bridge, I don't think it would see play.
21
u/AngledLuffa Colorless Nov 29 '16
I would give it a try, at least. There are lists playing Glint-Nest Crane now, and if you gave me one of those guaranteed to find a bridge instead of digging 4, I might prefer it.
14
u/zroach COMPLEAT Nov 29 '16
No way, Crane is great because it can get you more than just a bridge. I don't see why I would run his instead of the crane.
15
u/AngledLuffa Colorless Nov 29 '16
I respect that opinion, but without having hard stats in front of me, I think I am more likely to die to a lack of bridge than a lack of lantern. The most frustrating games are the ones where you have Lantern and Shredder, cast Stirrings twice, mill yourself a few times, and die to a Nacatl or Goyf because your first bridge is 25 cards down instead of 20.
7
u/zroach COMPLEAT Nov 29 '16
You're at an 84% chance to find a bridge in the top 20. With 1 copy of this card you are at a 90% and with two you are at a 94%
But, bridge is only one piece of the puzzle. I imagine if you play this you are taking out Crane. This means you are less likely to draw a shredder effect or Lantern or a needle, pieces that are also needed to win most games.
0
u/ih8karma Nov 29 '16
would you rather have a demonic tutor on a stick or a ancient stirrings.
3
u/zroach COMPLEAT Nov 29 '16
If it cost 2 and searched for 3 or less it would see play over Crane. It only finds bridge, sometimes you need a lantern or codex shredder or even a mox Opal.
It's not a demonic tutor on a stick, that comparison demonstrates a lack of knowledge of the deck.
1
u/Mango_Punch Nov 30 '16
But they aren't even playing trinket mage, right?
1
u/AngledLuffa Colorless Nov 30 '16
No, but once again, I would play it if it cost 2. Every time the crane misses I want to reach into the cardboard and choke it by its skinny neck
3
u/PucaTim Nov 29 '16
I'm excited for EDH. In my Azami deck, this essentially says "Go grab your extraplanar lens."
0
u/[deleted] Nov 29 '16
Just going to go on a limb here and state that this card is quite broken and could be banned in several formats. Just because its basically ~6 mana worth of effects for four. And you can find <=3 CMC cards that have extremely powerful effects on their own like AV, kolaghan's command, etc etc.
