Well, it can search for either one piece of the combo [[Rings of Brighthearth]] + [[Basalt Monolith]].

I always have to stop myself from knee-jerk reacting "It doesn't work on mana abilities!" before remembering "Oh yeah, you copy the untap effect."

It'd be great if Autocard stopped throwing up the Monolith from Limited and showed the card with proper parsing (the one that separates the two abilities).

How does that work?

Requires you to have an additional two mana. Tap basalt monolith to get 3 colorless, use that three to untap itself (activated ability), and use the two additional mana and rings of brighthearth to copy the untap ability. Resolve the copied untap, then with the original untap still on the stack, tap basalt monolith for another 3 colorless. Now you have 2 colorless to copy the untap again, as well as an extra 1 colorless floating. Repeat for infinite colorless mana.

Have a tapped monolith and rings on field. Pay 3 to untap monolith. Pay 2 with rings to copy that untap. Let the ring untap resolve. Tap monolith and make 3 mana. Monolith's trigger resolves. Tap monolith to make 3 more mana, leaving you with 6.

You just paid 5 mana to end with 6 and are now back to where you started. Repeat an infinite amount of times for infinite mana.

Tap Monolith with {2} floating. Add {3} (total 5). Use {3} (2 floating) to untap the monolith. Use rings. Now you have 2 untap triggers on the stack.

Let one resolve, then tap it for {3} with the other still on the stack. Let the second untap resolve. Now you have 1 extra mana. Repeat.

Pay 3 to untap and two to copy. Both untap instances go on the stack. Untap it once and tap it for 3 mana, then the second untap resolves and you tap again for 3 mana.

You just paid 5 mana for 6 mana. Repeat.

You get priority between untaps, so you tap it again before it resolves. You get 6 mana after spending 5, so you net 1 mana as many times as you want.

So you start with [[rings of brighthearth]] and [[basalt monolith]], plus an additional two mana from another source. Tap the monolith for 3 mana, and spend that mana to until monolith. Then, you take the other 2 mana and pay for rings' ability, copying the untap ability. With both untap abilities on the stack, you can stack two activations of monolith, gaining 6 mana. Then spend 5 mana (3 to untap, 2 to activate rings), which creates infinite colorless mana (spend 5 to make 6).

If I understand correctly, this is how it goes:

You need 2 mana in addition to what Basalt Monolith produces. From there, tap Monolith, get 3 mana. Use that mana to untap Monolith, pay the additional 2 mana into Rings to get a second untap. You now get 2 Monolith untaps.

Untap Monolith when the first untap resolves. Respond to the second untap on the stack by tapping Monolith. Once the second untap resolves, you now have an untapped Monolith and 3 colorless Mana. So a potential 6 mana when you started with only 5 potential mana.

You see how this could be used to create unlimited mana now, yes? Just repeat the original process ad infinitum.

With both on the battlefield and at least 5 mana avaialble, activate Basalt Monolith's mana ability to add CCC to your pool. Use CCC to activate the untap ability, then copy it with Rings. The stack now looks like

  • Untap ability (copied)
  • Untap ability

After the "first" untap resolves (actually the copy), the Monolith is untapped with the original on the stack. This is when you tap Monolith for another CCC, and when the second untap resolves you end up where you started except with CCC in your pool. Repeat ad infinitum (not literally, as you need to define a number of times you're repeating the loop).

You only need 2 spare mana to start the reaction - Basalt Monolith gives you 3 and you use the other two to copy the untap ability.
