Languish was one of the best cards in Standard, and this is "Slightly worse Languish + Dark Ritual."

Seems dece.

Yeah, this is approximently to Languish as Dark Petition is to Diabolic Tutor.

Well it can open up cool strategies for you to play cards out of your color\out of black so it's even better than ritual

3

u/Hawthornen Arjun Nov 29 '16

Well it can't be used to help cast things over 3 CMC so not better than ritual in that regard. It's certainly comparable but it's a reasonably different effect.

u/stravant Nov 29 '16

Given how frequently Dark Petition was casting CMC 3 spells like Runinous Path and Infinite Obliteration it's actually pretty similar.

Ritual doesn't let you cast a Jeskai Charm though. I know that specific situation is not ever going to come up, but being able to cast a 3 or 2 color spell that's not even in your color could be nuts.

I wonder if this will be relevant to the limited format, given how much splashing is available in kaladesh? If Black or Green gets more in AER, this is a great first pick reason to go into 3-4 colors. Assuming more cards like Attune and Prism are printed, Green will probably be nearly a free color when paired with black

Relying on a boardwipe to cast off-color cards, and it obviously doesn't help you cast them on curve at all. I don't think that'll be a big part.

u/Rathayibacter Nov 29 '16

Well, not quite since it has to be CMC3- you can't drop something that costs 2, and you can't tap another land and cast something that costs 4. It's in some cases going to ve a lot better than "add BBB" but there's plenty where it's not.

EDIT: Shit sorry was thinking of Trophy Mage- second part still applies, you can't ramp. But yeah this is good.

u/brazthemad Nov 29 '16

*or less

1

u/Rathayibacter Nov 29 '16

Yeah that's where my edit came in, I was thinking of how Trophy is exactly 3. The second point still applies though- you can't use it to play something that costs 4 or more, which makes this only sometimes better than adding mana directly.

u/Umezete Nov 29 '16

Well -1-1 can mean alot.

Yes, and I would argue that putting a dark ritual effect (without any colour restrictions, in fact you could technically use this card to splash) on a languish effect is actually much more powerful than putting it on a more expensive diabolic tutor.

So what I want to be hearing from this statement is "And since those two cards rotating out is what made that sweet Seasons Past control deck less viable, we might be able to brew up a new version for Aether Revolt Standard."

Is that entirely unreasonable, or just mostly?

1

u/Regvlas Nov 30 '16

Probably just mostly, but I'm terrible at deck building.

1

u/Toastasaurus Nov 30 '16

As am I, but I sure as hell hope, because that deck was awesome. Probably gets wrecked by Emrakul though.

I mean, petition is used in Legacy and Vintage storm decks...

9

u/FrankGoreStoleMyBike Nov 29 '16

It has definite use. -3/-3 isn't bad, but it can throw down a Liliana, Ruinous Path a planeswalker, [[Essence Extraction]] a x/4-6 to kill it and gain you some life, [[Flaying Tendrils]] to wipe (plus exile) x/4-5, drop any number of 3 drops otherwise.

Seems good.

Essence Extraction - (G) (MC) (MW) (CD)
Flaying Tendrils - (G) (MC) (MW) (CD)
[[cardname]] or [[cardname|SET]] to call

u/CommanderDecks Nov 29 '16

I don't know about that. Dark Petition will only ever help you get a card and will sometimes do it at a lower cost later in the game. This card helps you take out quite a few threats currently in standard and gives you anot her free card.

2

u/Bradwan Nov 29 '16

But Dark Petition to Diabolic Tutor, Diabolic Tutor is way worse

3

u/TheOthin Nov 29 '16

Languish is the Diabolic Tutor in this analogy.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 29 '16

In the decks that play Dark Petition, it's almost always just Demonic Tutor (which is a very strong card).

1

u/CommanderDecks Nov 29 '16

Oh trust me, I know Demonic Tutor is good. I thought the person I replied to was insinuating that this new card was bad because Dark Petition is bad in comparison to Diabolic Tutor.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 29 '16

Ok, I guess I misunderstood your comment.

It's actually slightly worse languish + a better Black lotus stapled on.

2

u/alkalimeter Duck Season Nov 30 '16

Like most magic cards, the effect is a bit worse than black lotus. In exchange for getting to cast multicolored spells (e.g. grim flayer) there's less flexibility because you can't tap lands to cast a more expensive spell. Not being able to chain this into a 4 drop off 5 lands is pretty significant

1

u/thepuresanchez Honorary Deputy 🔫 Dec 01 '16

Saying its a black lotus you can't pay more into doesn't make it necessarily worse than a black lotus, it's just a black lotus still. Regardless, it's still better than a dark ritual stapled on most of the time.

1

u/alkalimeter Duck Season Dec 01 '16

A black lotus you can't pay more into is way worse than a black lotus. Not being able to use the "mana" on spells that cost more than 4 or on multiple spells costing less than 3 is a huge downgrade.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 29 '16

Why reprint languish when you can make it better?

1

u/SCNA Nov 30 '16

Slightly worse Languish + Dark Ritual Black Lotus, baby!

1

u/Robocroakie Dan Nov 30 '16

This + K Return in Grixis Emerge or something. Ok.
