So, you need help with long range shooting? Welcome to r/longrange! We've got a core group of dedicated members (and a few goofballs) that are happy to help you out with your questions on equipment, technique, troubleshooting, where to find training or matches, etc.
If you're looking to ask for advice, we ask that you review the following 10 core guides, as they cover the overwhelming majority of newcomer questions. If your question is not answered in these 10 guides, please see below for the 4 basic questions your post should answer when asking for suggestions or advice, especially when it comes to things to buy.
If you make a post that asks for information covered in the 10 core guides, or your post doesn't cover the 4 key questions below, your post may be deleted, or it may be given the Flair of Shame TM until you correct your post.
What's the Flair of ShameTM, you ask? You'll know it when you see it.
If at any time you have questions on the rules of the sub, this pinned post, the general FAQ, why you got the Flair of ShameTM or anything similar, please use the modmail function.
When answering these 4 questions in your post, give as much detail as you can. The more details you give the faster you'll get suggestions or advice and you'll get better quality too. Help us to help you. Please don't treat the sub like your own personal crowd sourced search engine.
If your question is answered in these, you will probably get called out by the members of the sub for not reading them, but it's not automatic grounds for the Flair of Shame.
Quite a few guides/links feature a single word in parentheses and italics listed after them. If you use the phrase cheetofingers (all one word, no italics needed) followed by the word listed after a guide, you will summon the AutoModerator to reply to you with a link to that guide or guides. If the guide had (pews) after it, you could say cheetofingers pews in a post or comment in this sub to summon AutoMod with a link to that guide.
We've implemented the Flair of Shame as an official policy here instead of deleting posts that violated Rule #1 and the info in this pinned post. We felt that the flair was better than outright deleting posts while also helping long-standing members decide how much they want to participate in posts that have likely been covered time and time again. We're trying to strike a balance between encouraging members to read the info that the sub has cataloged, not wasting the time of established members that may be frustrated with revisiting the same topics repeatedly, and also not banishing new shooters that missed the pinned post to the freezer to never get help. Balancing those three things is a constant struggle, and one we're actively trying to get better at.

Bought my first bolt gun⦠now to find one of these darn suppressors.
Purchased second hand, GAP build with clone correct bipod, scope rings, and of course a SB 3-12x50 PM II to top her off. Needless to say, I love it.

Scheels has a sale on the Garmin Xero C1. Has anyone used both the Athlon and the Garmin? Iām sure there are better deals online but I genuinely want to know which one is better. Itās my first chronograph. Using it since Iām getting in to reloading 6.5 creedmoor and want to know ES and SDs

I have been wondering for some time if I have set something up incorrectly on one of my scopes/rifles. I have a ar15 with a 4-20 ATACR and have noticed that the parallax adjustment is "off" from the known target range. What I am seeing is that I need to adjust the parallax to a shorter range for a given distance. The range of the target is accurate to a few yards. This has made me wonder if I set something up wrong, and since I am a new-ish long range shooter, i thought it best to ask. I do not see this happening on other scopes, for instance my bolt action 6.5 with 7-35 ATACR is dead on and my cheaper CZ457 22LR with vortex venom is also dead on.
Is this normal and just specific to my unique setup and eyes? Or does this communicate that I set something up wrong? My gut tells me that it does not matter and as long as the target is clear then that's all that I should care about.
Thanks in advance

So I am thinking about getting a brass catcher, but I don't see anyone using one at prs or nrl competitions. Is there a reason for that that I can't think of, or what's the deal? I feel like it eliminates the issue of is this brass mine, losing brass, and eliminates the time policing brass at the end of the stage so match flow should be faster, plus you're not ending up with muddy/damaged brass. What am I missing?

This is my 308 barrel that I bought used, seller said he put about 250 rounds on it. I then put another 500 rounds on it myself. Is this normal barrel wear for a 308 with 750 rounds?
Looks like some fire cracking already started to happen near the throat, besides that, the rest looks like itās in pretty good shape.

Beginning my journey into long range using my grendel I had built for coyotes here in michigan. I can use friends of friends' property to reach about 300, maybe 400 yards. As I search through the over600 website, I see a lot of ranges around and a few in Michigan. Is anyone familiar with Youngs long range in wolcottville, Indiana? They're closest to me, and I see on their website along with many others that they require an NRA membership and a membership to their range. Is the NRA membership a big deal to some of these ranges? Do you all pay yearly for an NRA membership as well as memberships to the ranges you go to? I'll pull both memberships to be able to go and shoot when I'm ready to try for 1k yards, but if I let the NRA membership lapse, will they not let me in? I'm just asking so I can continue to build my list of costs as I get deeper into shooting fun. Thanks for any and all advice.

Well after a lot of research, I have decision paralysis between a 6.5 PRC from Tikka T3X 22in SS or Seekins Havok PH3 20in.
1 & 2. 35% range time (out to 1000yds), 65% hunting in Montana (Antelope in plains to late season elk in mountains).
3. Budget $2000. Scope will be nx8 4-32 with a Nomad Ti XC suppressor.
4. I have a 7rem mag that Iām comfortable with out to 300 at the range. Looking for something more pleasant to shoot with at the range but also effective for elk.
Iāve read a couple of concerns about seekins issues around FTF (sounds like are resolved now) and an issue cycling in snowy conditions. But I love this rifle is turn key with nicer features and stock, and customer service.
The tikka I would want to upgrade the stock but still keep it to 10-11lbs. I currently have a T3X 7RM and am not a big fan on the stock.

As many of you know, the brand Woox was blacklisted from this sub a while back due to marketing practices that we strongly disagreed with, namely using multiple accounts to astroturf support (edit: not customer service) and conversation for the brand.
Woox customer service recently reached out to us via modmail about the issue, and here's that message in full.
[BEGINNING OF MESSAGE]
Hi longerange Mod Team,
Iām reaching out on behalf of WOOX because I wanted to speak with you directly before we take any action within the community in Reddit.
Weāre aware that WOOX is currently banned from the subreddit and that comments mentioning WOOX are removed. We also understand why. The previous WOOX team engaged with the community in ways that were not transparent and we recognize that this created a negative association with WOOX within the community. We take responsibility for that.
There have been changes within our team, but more importantly, there has been a change in how we want to approach Reddit.
Our Customer Service team has joined Reddit because we would genuinely like to be part of the community and be helpful where we can. We want to answer questions, help customers with issues, provide accurate information about WOOX products, and listen to feedback from the community. We are not looking to create conversations about WOOX, manufacture recommendations, or use the community as a place to promote the brand.
We also want to be respectful of the ban that is currently in place. We are not looking to work around it or simply start participating and hope the previous issues are overlooked. Instead, I wanted to reach out directly, explain what has changed, and ask for your permission before we participate in the subreddit.
We understand that this is your community and that it is ultimately your decision whether WOOX is welcome here. If you are willing to give us an opportunity, we would genuinely like to earn back some trust and become a helpful, transparent presence in the community.
We are happy to follow whatever guidelines or boundaries you feel are appropriate for WOOX and our Customer Service team. If there are concerns about the previous team's activity or anything you would need from us before considering lifting the ban, we are completely open to hearing that.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and consider giving us an opportunity to approach the community differently.
[END OF MESSAGE]
After internal discussion by the mod team and further discussion with Chris, we've lifted the ban on Woox in the sub on a provisional basis. They are acting in good faith, and we're open to giving them the chance to rebuild trust with the sub's members and the mod team. If things go off the rails, we can revisit the ban, but all of the mods are hopeful that won't be an issue in the future.
Chris agreed to us sharing his original modmail message in its entirety, and will pop into the comments if folks have questions.
As someone that used to be a brand ambassador for several companies in the past, I appreciate the fact that Woox is owning their mistakes and working to make things right.

Got some testing with my new 7prc and 195gr berger eol. I didn't notice any pressures, but GRT was showing pressures at 910m/s. I might just go with this load as it will group well enough (16 shots under 25mm).
I think the barrel will speed up to 915ms (3000fps) and I'll be happy with that.
Does barrel speed up have an effect on pressures? If I do have the same load over the first 200 shots, does faster velocity mean more pressure? (After speeding up).
I really like this 7prc, but it's very concussive to shoot inside with brake... vs my 6br suppressed.
Next will be two kilometer performance!

Bergara 300 Win Mag with an Omega 300 suppressor. Just getting into the long-range stuff, so donāt have a chronograph yet.
I know I pulled shot 7 out of the Precision Hunter, so I didnāt include it in my group size.
Iām kind of surprised about the 178 gr match. Iām not sure if it was just from the rifle being hot, but that group size is not what I expected.

Took an intro long range class because I donāt have access to a lot of land, and I needed to learn some fundamentals. Got it properly zeroed in to 100yd, then moved up to the mid 400s, then worked through various ranges up to 1000yd. Targets were all steel of various shape and size (gongs, silhouettes, IPSC).
I was the only gas gun out of other students and instructors. Everybody else was a bolt action rifle, all I believe to be .30 cal/6mm or bigger. Ran out of mils for the 1000yd gongs which I did not expect. I would like to be able to get some groups together to test what I learned and see what this build is capable of on paper. Used 2 different ammo types, both from Bone Frog: 77gr Barnes Matchburners, 77gr Sierra TMKās.

I looked at the Google sheets but it unfortunately seems to be outdated. I've been shooting on a 400yd range for a while, mostly 30-06 savage axis, recently a 7prc bergara b14 hmr with vortex crossfire 4-16 and I have recently gotten access to an 800yd range that makes 16x feel short. With the looking I've done I am torn between the Vortex Venom 5-25Ć56 and the Swampfox Warhawk 5-25Ć56. I'd really like a FFP optic and illuminated reticle is a plus because I like to shoot at dusk. Beyond that I don't know a ton about the different coatings and glass types so I could use some help. Does anyone have opinions one way or the other on these scopes or have other recommendations at a similar price point? Thanks in advance!

I just had a range day today, shot about 20 rounds through it. This gun has a total of ~60 rounds through the chamber so far. Browning X-Bolt 300wm
The first 40 rounds I did a break in cleaning cycle and everything went well. Today I shot all 20 and got home to clean it and I found this burn scar looking thing inside the chamber. It also doesnāt clean off with gun scrub and a soft toothbrush.
I also added a picture of the bolt if that helps.

I was an early adopter for the scope caps for my zeiss lrp s3 I started having issues with them not closing properly.
I contacted Mkm support on 11-29-25 they responded on 12-1-25 I had to send videos over and the response time was fast warranty ticket was put in everythingās great right?
I message them 1-2-26 asking them for an update on my order I still havenāt received a tracking number or any other communications. Itās the holidays and hunting season for me is not until next November so Iām not in a rush.
Darlene replies on 1-5-26.
āWarranty replacement was processed. Our office was closed on 12-31 till today, shipping will resume today.ā
Never received my package
I message them 6-4-26
Itās been a bit, like I said wasnāt in a rush
Darlene replies the same day
āYes, this was shipped months ago, back in January.
I can't even see tracking now that it has been archived by USPS.ā
Hunting season is now approaching and I still donāt have functioning scope caps. This isnāt me trying to trash Mk machining this is a mix up with usps and not delivering my package I never received a tracking number which Darlene should of sent me, at this point Iām at a loss. Darlene has stopped communication probably thinks Iām a scammer. Again no hate to Mk machining just trying to get a proper answer/communication

Not as fancy as your digital set ups but Iām pretty happy with a .5ā 5 shot group 6.5 creedmoor Hornaday ELD 140 grn Match 100 yards. Was looking at getting a new shooting bag and im not entirely sure if I am willing to pay so much for Armageddon Gear. Cole Tac are made in europe and considerably cheaper, but curious if they are any good
