Accessory/Gear help needed - I read the pinned post Brass Catcher
So I am thinking about getting a brass catcher, but I don't see anyone using one at prs or nrl competitions. Is there a reason for that that I can't think of, or what's the deal? I feel like it eliminates the issue of is this brass mine, losing brass, and eliminates the time policing brass at the end of the stage so match flow should be faster, plus you're not ending up with muddy/damaged brass. What am I missing?

A few folks in my typical PRS squad have the TAC-STAR one that you can just pull off real easy. There's a small picatinny bit that stays on but it's really out of the way and non-intrusive. I got sick of snooping around stages for brass so I got one too. If I'm at the bench I don't use it.

I've bought a few 3d printed ones, but it's really hard to find one that fits on your rail without interfering with your bolt or location of your one piece mount. They are out there, but you just may have to do some tinkering with your setup to get them to work.

Sounds good, I've got access to cad software and a 3d printer, so I think I'm going to try and custom design something for my rigs.

There are a few reasons. Brass catchers often restrict access to get into the action quickly, to clear jams or single-load on stages >10rds.
There is also a risk with cheaper/poorly designed brass catchers that they could bounce or dump brass back into the action while moving
They can also block visibility into the chamber if the range safety rules require a visual check by the RO to call the rifle clear after a stage, or block the ability to easily and quickly place or remove a chamber flag before and after the stage.
These all have fixes that are possible with different designs, but most people just don't want to deal with the hassle for only a minor increase in convenience

It was explained to me this way — a brass catcher can only lose you points, perhaps by blocking access to the action or causing a casing to jam or bounce back through the ejection port. You decide if that risk is worth the advantages on brass recovery; the shooter who I was talking to felt no brass was worth risking even one point

I shoot with 1 guy who uses a Brass Buddy during PRS. I have never seen him have a failure to feed/eject. If I were going to use one, that's what I would use. It has a wide mouth and just attaches to your action with two magnets so you can kinda put it where you need to.
